Game Server Hosting With Full Control: What to Look For

Game server hosting with full control means a real console, file access, SFTP, mods and no lock in. A checklist for choosing a host that gives you freedom.

Game server hosting with full control means you can do everything on a hosted server that you could do on your own machine: type any console command, edit every config file, upload worlds and modpacks over SFTP, install the mods your game supports, change plans or games, and leave whenever you want. Some hosts simplify things by hiding the files and limiting you to a settings page. This guide is a checklist of what full control looks like, so you can tell the difference before you pay.

Short answer: the full control checklist

A host gives you real control if it offers all of these:

  1. A live console that accepts any command, not just a start and stop button.
  2. A file manager where you can open, edit, upload, download and delete any server file.
  3. SFTP access for large uploads like worlds and modpacks.
  4. Mod and plugin support in whatever form the game supports it.
  5. Backups you can take yourself, before any risky change.
  6. Plan changes without starting over, up or down.
  7. Your own address and port.
  8. Monthly billing and self service cancellation, with no contract.

The rest of this guide explains why each one matters and what to check.

Why control matters

A server you cannot fully control is fine until the day you need something it does not offer. Common examples:

  • You want to upload the world you built in single player, and there is no way to reach the save folder.
  • A mod needs one line changed in a config file the panel does not show.
  • An admin command you need is not one of the buttons.
  • The game you all played goes quiet, and the host makes you cancel and buy a new server to try another.

Each of these is trivial with file access and a real console, and impossible without them.

1. A real console

The console is the server's live output and its command line. With full access you can run anything the game supports: op and whitelist add on Minecraft, kick and ban on most games, save on Terraria, admin commands on Rust and 7 Days to Die, and so on.

Check: can you type any command, or only click preset buttons? Buttons are a great shortcut, but they should sit next to the console, not replace it.

On GamezServers the Console tab shows live output and accepts any command, and one click actions cover everyday jobs such as saving the world or broadcasting a message.

2. File access in the browser

Almost every serious change to a game server is a file edit: server.properties for Minecraft, PalWorldSettings.ini for Palworld, serverconfig.xml for 7 Days to Die, Game.ini and GameUserSettings.ini for ARK, serverDZ.cfg for DayZ.

Check: can you open and edit any file, upload new ones and download everything? Or does the host only expose a handful of settings through a form?

Our Files tab lets you browse all your server's files, edit configs in the browser, upload, download and delete. Config changes usually need a restart to take effect.

3. SFTP for big transfers

Browser uploads are fine for a config file. For a 2 GB modpack or a world folder with thousands of files, you want SFTP with a desktop app like FileZilla or WinSCP.

Check: does the host give you SFTP credentials, and can you get them yourself without a ticket?

On GamezServers, go to Settings and click Show SFTP login to see the host, port, username and password. Each time you show it, a new password is set.

4. Mods and plugins

Full control also means running the mods your game supports, the way the game supports them:

Game How mods work
Minecraft Paper and Purpur for plugins, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for mods, CurseForge and Modrinth modpacks, Geyser for Bedrock players
Rust Server side plugins in a framework's plugins folder, nothing for players to download
ARK: Survival Ascended CurseForge mod IDs, downloaded on start
Valheim BepInEx mods from Thunderstore, matching on server and players
Project Zomboid Steam Workshop IDs and Mod IDs in the server config
Factorio Mod portal mods, synced to players automatically
Terraria tModLoader

Check: can you upload your own mod files, or only pick from a list the host approves? Some games, like Enshrouded and Dragonwilds, have no official server mod support, so no host can offer it there.

For step by step modding, see how to host a modded game server.

5. Backups you control

Before a big mod install or a game update, you want a restore point.

Check: can you take a backup yourself at any moment, and can you download it?

Our panel has a Backup button and keeps 3 backups. You can also download your files through the file manager or SFTP, so you always have your own copy.

6. Changing plans and games

Control is also about not being locked in to the choice you made on day one.

  • Plan changes. On GamezServers you pick another plan in Settings, the price is prorated, and the new memory applies after a restart.
  • Switching games. Move the server to another game with a same memory plan. We back up the current world first and the reinstall takes about a minute. See one game server for multiple games.

7. Your own address

Every server gets its own address and port. You share it with your group, and nobody ever sees your home IP.

8. Freedom to leave

The last kind of control is over your money. Look for monthly billing, cancellation from the dashboard without contacting anyone, and a server that keeps running to the end of the period you paid for.

Our plans are monthly with no contract and no setup fee. Cancel from Billing on your dashboard, and the server runs until the end of the paid month. Details in billing and cancellation and game server hosting with no contract.

Control for friends, too

On a shared server you may want friends to help run things. With Server Share, friends who pay a share and make an account with the same email see the server in their own dashboard and can use the console, actions and files. The owner keeps plan changes, game switching, the split and SFTP. See the control panel docs.

Full control vs self hosting

Self hosting gives you the most control of all: root on your own machine. What it adds is responsibility: keeping the PC on, port forwarding, security updates and hardware. A host with a full console, files and SFTP gives you nearly all the control for the things that matter to a game server, without the rest.

FAQ

Do game server hosts give you full access?

It varies. Look for a console that accepts any command, a file manager that shows every file, and SFTP. If any of those is missing, you will hit a wall eventually.

Can I upload my own mods to a hosted server?

On GamezServers yes, where the game supports mods. Use the file manager or SFTP to upload mod files, or the panel's server types on Minecraft.

Can I use FileZilla with my game server?

Yes. Show the SFTP login in Settings and enter the host, port, username and password in FileZilla or WinSCP.

Can I edit server config files on a hosted server?

Yes. Open them in the browser file manager, save, and restart the server for the change to apply.

Get a server you control

Pick a game on the games page. You are live in about a minute with the full console, files and SFTP from the start.

Want a server without the setup?

Pick a game, pay, play. Your address and login appear the moment checkout finishes.
