Minecraft Realms is better if you want the simplest setup and console friends joining in two taps, with up to 11 players at once. A dedicated server is better if you want more players, file access, console commands, downloadable backups, or plugins and mods on Java. Both cost about 4 to 8 USD a month for a friend group.

What is the difference between Realms and a dedicated server?

Realms is Mojang's own subscription hosting, built into the game. A dedicated server is a full server program, Bedrock Dedicated Server for Bedrock or a Java server like Paper, that you rent from a host or run yourself.

Is Realms worth it for Bedrock?

For small groups that mostly play on console, often yes. The biggest Realms advantage on Bedrock is joining: Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players see your Realm right in the Play menu. Consoles have no Add Server button, so joining a dedicated server needs a workaround like BedrockConnect, which takes a few minutes to set up once per console. Our guide to joining a Bedrock server on Xbox, PS5 and Switch covers it.

Realms Plus also includes Marketplace Pass, a rotating catalog of Marketplace worlds, skins and add-ons, which is good value if your group would buy Marketplace content anyway.

New in 2026: Realms got Invite Codes with the Wilderness Bound drop. Each Realm can have up to five codes, each with its own expiry date and on or off switch (Minecraft.net, September 15, 2026).

When is a dedicated server better than Realms?

As soon as you hit one of the Realms limits.

  • More than 11 players online. Realms caps you at you plus 10. A 4 GB Bedrock server handles 10 to 25 players, a 6 GB one up to 50.
  • You want the files. A dedicated server gives you server.properties, allowlist.json, permissions.json and the world folder. You can edit, swap and download them whenever you like.
  • You want a real console. Run commands like allowlist add, op, kick and gamerule without being in the game.
  • You want specific settings. View distance, tick distance, player idle timeout, movement checks and more are all in server.properties. See Bedrock server.properties explained.
  • Java plugins and mods. Java Realms run vanilla only. EssentialsX, LuckPerms, Fabric mods and modpacks need a server.
  • Java and Bedrock together. Realms only mixes players within one edition. A Java server with Geyser lets both editions play in one world.

Which is cheaper, Realms or a server?

They are close. For Bedrock:

Group size Realms GamezServers Bedrock
You + 2 3.99 USD 4.99 USD (2 GB, 10 players)
You + 10 7.99 USD Realms Plus 4.99 USD (2 GB) or 9.99 USD (4 GB, 25 players)
12 to 50 players Not possible 9.99 USD (4 GB) or 14.99 USD (6 GB)

A dedicated server can also be split: on GamezServers up to 10 friends each pay a share, plus 1 USD per share, and new customers get 50% off the first month. Realms is billed to one person. More in how much a Minecraft server costs.

Can I move my Realm to a dedicated server?

Yes. Download the world from your Realm, then upload it to the server.

  1. In Minecraft, open your Realm's settings and download the world. It appears in your singleplayer worlds.
  2. On Bedrock, export that world as a .mcworld file. On Java, the world is a folder in your saves.
  3. Unzip the .mcworld (it is a zip file) and upload the folder to the server's worlds folder.
  4. Set the world name (level-name) to that folder's exact name and restart.

Mojang keeps your Realm worlds for 18 months after a subscription ends, so you can still download them later. Our guide to moving your world to a hosted server has the details for both editions.

Our take

Pick Realms if your group is 11 or fewer, mostly on console, plays vanilla and wants zero setup. Pick a dedicated server if you want more players, your own files and backups, real admin tools, or Java plugins and mods. Many groups start on a Realm and move to a server when they outgrow it.

On GamezServers, a Bedrock server is online in about a minute with crossplay on Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, a one click allowlist and Update game for new Minecraft versions. See Minecraft Bedrock server hosting, or Minecraft Java server hosting for plugins and mods.

FAQ

Is a Minecraft server better than Realms?

For more than 11 players, file access, console commands or Java mods, yes. For a small console group that wants the simplest setup, Realms is easier.

How many players can join a Minecraft Realm?

You can invite up to 10,000 members, but only you plus 10 can play at once on Realms Plus or Java Realms, and you plus 2 on the basic Bedrock Realm.

Can console players join a dedicated Bedrock server?

Yes, but consoles have no Add Server button. They join through BedrockConnect or an app that shows the server as a LAN or friends game.

Can I use mods on a Java Realm?

No. Java Realms run vanilla Minecraft only. Plugins, Fabric mods and modpacks need a Java server.

Do my friends need to pay for my Realm or server?

No for Realms, invited friends play free. On a dedicated server they also play free, or they can choose to split the bill with you.
