How to join your Valheim server

Launch Valheim, click Start Game and pick your character.

Open the Join Game tab and click Add server.

Paste the server address, for example 203.0.113.10:2456, and click Add server again.

Select the server, click Connect and enter the server password.

Common problems

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 90 minutes with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Mods and plugins

Modding your Valheim server

Valheim mods run on BepInEx and are shared through Thunderstore. Most gameplay mods need to be installed on the server and on every player's game, in matching versions. Players on console cannot use mods, so modded servers are for PC players.

Valheim server hosting, explained

A Valheim dedicated server is a free, headless version of the game from Iron Gate, installed through SteamCMD. When you host from inside the game, your world is only online while you are playing and your PC does all the work for everyone. A dedicated server keeps the world running on its own, so the crew can log in and sail whenever they like, even when the person who started the world is offline.

A server is set up with a handful of launch options: the server name, port, world name, password and whether it is listed publicly. The password needs at least 5 characters and cannot be part of the server name. Crossplay is optional and lets Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 players join alongside PC players, and world modifiers let you set combat difficulty, resource rates and raids for the whole server. Valheim 1.0 also moved worlds to a new folder based save format that saves faster, and older worlds convert automatically the first time they load.

Valheim is light on memory compared with most survival games. 4 GB comfortably handles a small group, while a full crew of 10 with large bases, or a BepInEx modpack, is happier with 6 to 8 GB. What hurts performance most is heavy building in one area, so a server with fast single core speed and room to grow helps. How many Vikings can play?

Valheim supports up to 10 players per world.

Can I bring my existing world?

Yes. Upload your world folder, or the .db and .fwl files from a world saved before 1.0, and you are back where you left off. Older worlds convert to the new format the first time they load.

Does crossplay work?

Yes. Turn on crossplay and players on Xbox, PC Game Pass, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 can join Steam players on the same server. Mods are PC only, so crossplay servers are best kept vanilla.

Do my friends need mods installed too?

For most BepInEx mods, yes. Everyone needs the same mods and versions as the server. A mod manager with a shared profile code makes this easy.

Why can my friends not find my server?

Public servers can take a few minutes to appear in the community list. Adding the server by its IP and port under Join Game is instant.

Can I change the difficulty?

Yes. World modifiers set combat difficulty, death penalty, resource rates and raids for the whole server.

Are your servers protected from DDoS attacks?
