When Valheim runs from inside the game, the world only exists while the host is playing, and their PC does the work for everyone. If they are busy on a Tuesday night, the rest of the crew sits at the main menu.

A dedicated server keeps the world online on its own. Anyone can log in, farm their turnips or repair the longship, and the next person picks up where they left off. Already started a world on someone's PC? Upload it and keep every base and portal.

Five Vikings on the Starter plan

Valheim is light on memory for a survival game, and 4 GB comfortably handles a vanilla crew of up to 5. That is the Starter plan at $9.99 a month, and new customers pay half for the first month.

Split it with friends and each Viking pays their own share from a link: five ways it comes to about $3 each, including the $1 payment fee per share. If more of the group joins later, move to Standard with 6 GB and 10 slots from your dashboard, and the world comes with you.

Private by default

Every server gets a join password, and if you leave it empty we make one you can see in your panel. It needs 5 to 20 characters and cannot be part of the server name. Turn off Show in the community list and strangers never see the server at all, while your friends still join by address.

Want it locked down tighter? Add player IDs to permittedlist.txt for a whitelist, put yourself in adminlist.txt to kick and ban from the in game console, and use bannedlist.txt for anyone who burns down the longhouse.

Play at your crew's pace

Some groups want a relaxed build server, others want every troll to hurt. Pick Casual, Easy, Normal, Hard or Hardcore as the difficulty preset, or Hammer for free building, and fine tune death penalty, resources and raids for the whole crew.

Your world is backed up before every game update, and the server installs the latest Valheim on each restart, so a patch never leaves half the group with an incompatible version.

How to join your Valheim server

Launch Valheim, click Start Game and pick your character.

Open the Join Game tab and click Add server.

Paste 203.0.113.24:2456 and click Add server again.

Select the server, click Connect and enter the password from the server settings.

On Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2, type the server's join code in the Join Game tab instead. The owner finds it in the server console.

Common problems

Wrong password or cannot connect

The password is case sensitive. Right after a start or update the server needs a minute or two to load the world before it accepts players.

Joining from Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2

Console players join with the join code, not the address. The owner finds it in the server console on a line that says registered with join code.

Incompatible version

The server updates Valheim on every restart. After a Valheim patch the owner restarts the server and players update their game.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Common questions

How many friends can play on the 4 GB plan?

Starter has 5 slots, which suits a vanilla crew of up to 5. Valheim allows 10 players per world, and Standard with 6 GB gives you all 10.

Can we keep the world we started on a friend's PC?

Yes. Stop the server, open Files and upload the world folder, or the .db and .fwl files from an older world, into .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local. Set World name to the same name and start.

How do my friends join?

In Valheim they open Join Game, click Add server, paste the address and enter the password. Console friends type the server's join code instead, since crossplay is on by default.

How do I make the server invisible to strangers?

Turn off Show in the community list in Settings. Players can still join by address, and the password keeps out anyone who finds it.

Can each friend pay their own part?

Yes. Choose to split with friends at checkout and send each friend their payment link. You pay your share and the server starts right away.

How do I make myself an admin?

Add your player ID to adminlist.txt in .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim and restart. Press F2 in game to see player IDs.

How many Vikings can play?

Valheim supports up to 10 players per world.

Can I bring my existing world?

Yes. Stop the server, open Files and upload your world folder, or the .db and .fwl files from a world saved before 1.0, into .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local. Set World name to the same name and start. Older worlds convert to the new format the first time they load.

Does crossplay work?

Yes. Crossplay is on by default on the vanilla server type, so players on Xbox, PC Game Pass, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 can join Steam players on the same server with its join code. Mods are PC only, so crossplay servers are best kept vanilla.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
