Valheim Character Lost Items or Skills on a Server? Fixes
Valheim characters save on your PC, not the server. Why inventory or skills reset after playing on a dedicated server, and how to restore a backup.

If your Valheim character lost items, skills or recipes after playing on a dedicated server, the server did not do it: characters are saved on each player's own PC (or in Steam Cloud), and the server only keeps the world. Lost character progress comes from the character file going back to an older copy, usually because of a crash before the game saved, two PCs or cloud and local saves getting out of step, or a mod being removed. The game's Manage saves screen can restore an earlier backup of the character in most cases.
How Valheim stores a character
| What | Where it lives |
|---|---|
| Inventory, skills, known recipes, map you explored, appearance | The character file (.fch) on the player's device |
| Buildings, chests, terrain, portals, boss altars | The world on the server |
On Windows, local characters are in:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\characters_local\
Characters saved to Steam Cloud are kept in a separate characters folder that Steam syncs. Each character can be either local or cloud, and you choose which in the character screen.
Because the character lives on your PC, a server admin cannot restore your inventory from a server backup. The fix is on your side.
Cause 1: The game crashed before saving the character
Valheim writes the character when you log out and at regular points while playing. If the game crashes, freezes or is killed in Task Manager, you lose whatever happened since the last character save. You may also see duplicated or missing items between your inventory and chests, because the world saved at a different moment than your character.
Fix: open Manage saves from the main menu, pick the character and look at its backups. If one is newer than what loaded, restore it. Then always quit from the in game menu so the character saves.
If the server itself lost time after a crash, see Valheim server lost progress after a restart for the world side.
Cause 2: Two copies of the same character
Playing on a desktop and a Steam Deck, or switching a character between local and cloud saves, can leave two versions of one character. You load the older one and it looks like you lost a week of skills.
Fix:
- On the PC with the newest progress, open the character screen and check whether the character is local or cloud.
- If it is local and you want it on another device, use the option to move it to cloud saves and let Steam sync before you start the game on the other device.
- If Steam reports a cloud conflict when launching, pick the copy with the latest date, not the one Steam happens to highlight.
- Never have the same character open on two devices at once.
Game Pass and console players keep characters on their own platform's storage, and moving a character between platforms is not supported in the same way. Keep each player's character on one platform.

Cause 3: A mod was removed
Mods that add inventory slots, equipment slots or new items store data in the character file. Remove the mod and the game no longer knows about those slots or items, so they are dropped the next time the character saves. This is the most painful case because it is permanent once saved.
Fix: put the same mod back before playing again, and restore the character backup from Manage saves if the items are already gone. On a BepInEx server where everyone shares a mod profile, never remove inventory or item mods mid playthrough. If the group wants to switch to vanilla or crossplay, empty modded slots and items into chests first. The Valheim BepInEx guide covers keeping a group on the same mod list.
Cause 4: Death and the death penalty
Not every loss is a bug. When you die, your items stay in a tombstone where you fell and you lose part of your skill progress. Server world modifiers change how harsh this is: the Death penalty setting can range from casual (keep everything) to hardcore (lose items and much more skill progress). If players feel skills dropping fast, check which death penalty the server uses. The world modifiers guide explains each level.
Cause 5: You loaded a different world
The map you explored is stored per world in your character file. If the server's world name changed, or the server was pointed at a new world, your character arrives with a blank map and its spawn point on another world. Your inventory and skills are still there. Ask the admin whether the world changed.
Restoring a character backup by hand
If Manage saves does not show the backup you need, look in the save folders directly:
- Close Valheim.
- Open
characters_local(or the Steam Cloudcharactersfolder). - Look for files with the character's name and a backup or
.oldsuffix, with their dates. - Copy the current
.fchsomewhere safe first. - Rename the backup you want to
<name>.fch, replacing the current one. - Start Valheim and load the character.
Keep a manual copy of your .fch file before big boss fights or before changing mods. It takes seconds and is the only real insurance for a character.
What the server owner can do
Server owners cannot restore characters, but they can stop the conditions that cause losses: keep the server stable so players are not disconnected mid save, warn the group before removing any mod, and take world backups before risky moments so the world and characters can be brought back in step. On a GamezServers Valheim server, one click backups cover the world, the panel's world modifiers set the death penalty, and the BepInEx server type keeps the mod setup in one place. For a group starting fresh, see the Valheim game page.

FAQ
Are Valheim characters saved on the server?
No. Characters are saved on each player's device or in Steam Cloud. The server only saves the world.
Can a server admin restore my inventory?
No, not from a server backup. Restore your character from Manage saves in the main menu, or from a backup file in your character folder.
Why did my skills drop on the server?
Usually from dying, with the server's death penalty setting deciding how much. If skills went back without a death, your character loaded an older save.
Will my character work on another Valheim server?
Yes. The same character can join any server, and it keeps its inventory and skills, with a separate explored map for each world.
