Mods without the headache

BepInEx is installed before you log in

Valheim mods run on BepInEx, and setting it up on a dedicated server by hand means matching versions, editing launch files and hoping the doorstop loads. Choose the BepInEx server type when you order and that is all done when your server comes online.

You get the folders players know from their own installs, so a guide written for a local game works on your server too.

Thunderstore mods or a whole modpack

Upload single mods to BepInEx/plugins with the file manager or SFTP, or enter a Thunderstore modpack name and press Update game in the panel. The server pulls every mod in the pack, at the versions the pack lists.

Mod manager users can share a profile code with friends, so everyone installs the exact same set in a couple of clicks.

Everyone needs the same mods

Most gameplay mods have to run on the server and on every player's game, in matching versions. When one player is out of date, Valheim refuses the connection, so keep one shared list and update together.

Mods are PC only. If anyone in the crew plays on Xbox, PlayStation 5, Switch 2 or Game Pass, a vanilla crossplay server is the better fit.

Room for big modded worlds

How to join your Valheim server

Launch Valheim, click Start Game and pick your character.

Open the Join Game tab and click Add server.

Paste 203.0.113.24:2456 and click Add server again.

Select the server, click Connect and enter the password from the server settings.

On Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2, type the server's join code in the Join Game tab instead. The owner finds it in the server console.

Common problems

Wrong password or cannot connect

The password is case sensitive. Right after a start or update the server needs a minute or two to load the world before it accepts players.

Joining from Xbox, PlayStation or Switch 2

Console players join with the join code, not the address. The owner finds it in the server console on a line that says registered with join code.

Incompatible version

The server updates Valheim on every restart. After a Valheim patch the owner restarts the server and players update their game.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Common questions

Can I add mods to my Valheim server?

Yes. Pick the BepInEx server type, then upload mods to BepInEx/plugins or enter a Thunderstore modpack and press Update game in the panel.

Do my friends need the mods too?

For most gameplay mods, yes. Everyone needs the same mods and versions as the server. Sharing a mod manager profile code is the easiest way to keep everyone matched.

Can console players join a modded server?

No. Mods are PC only, so Xbox, PlayStation 5, Switch 2 and Game Pass players need a vanilla server. Vanilla servers have crossplay on by default.

Which plan do I need for a modpack?

Most small packs run well on Standard with 6 GB. Heavier packs with lots of creatures and building mods are happier on Pro with 8 GB. You can change plans any time.

Can I switch an existing server to BepInEx?

Yes. Change the server type to BepInEx under Settings in your panel. Your world is backed up first and kept.

How many Vikings can play?

Valheim supports up to 10 players per world.

Can I bring my existing world?

Yes. Stop the server, open Files and upload your world folder, or the .db and .fwl files from a world saved before 1.0, into .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local. Set World name to the same name and start. Older worlds convert to the new format the first time they load.

Does crossplay work?

Yes. Crossplay is on by default on the vanilla server type, so players on Xbox, PC Game Pass, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 can join Steam players on the same server with its join code. Mods are PC only, so crossplay servers are best kept vanilla.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
