Pick a Minecraft Java server if your group plays on PC and wants plugins, mods or modpacks. Pick a Bedrock server if friends play on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or phones and you want simple vanilla crossplay. For a mixed group that also wants plugins, run a Java server with Geyser and Floodgate so Bedrock players can join too.

What is the difference between a Java and a Bedrock server?

They are two different games that share a name. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bedrock Edition runs on Windows, iPhone, iPad, Android, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock server and a Bedrock player cannot join a Java server, unless you add a translator like Geyser.

Should I host a Java or a Bedrock server?

Decide by who plays and what they want to do.

  • Everyone is on PC, and you want plugins or mods: Java. Nothing on Bedrock comes close to the Java plugin and modpack scene.
  • Some friends are on console or phone, and you want vanilla survival: Bedrock. It is lighter, cheaper and crossplay is native.
  • Mostly PC with a few console or phone friends: Java with Geyser and Floodgate. Bedrock players join your Java world from any device.
  • Kids on tablets and consoles only: Bedrock, with the allowlist on.

Why pick a Java server?

Java has the bigger server ecosystem. Paper gives you a faster server with plugins like EssentialsX, LuckPerms and GriefPrevention. Fabric, Forge and NeoForge run everything from small quality of life mods to 300 mod packs like All the Mods. You also pick the version: a modpack on Minecraft 1.20.1 keeps running on 1.20.1 for years, and players just launch that version.

The downsides are memory and platform. Java servers need more RAM, especially with mods, and only PC and Mac players can join without Geyser. See the best Minecraft server plugins and the best modpacks for a server for what Java unlocks.

Why pick a Bedrock server?

Bedrock Dedicated Server is native code, so it runs lean: 2 GB comfortably holds a group of 10, where a modded Java server for the same group might need 6 to 8 GB. Crossplay is built in, so a friend on a Switch, a cousin on an iPad and you on Windows share one world.

The trade offs are versions and consoles. Phones and consoles update Minecraft automatically, and a Bedrock player cannot join a server on an older version, so you update the server after every Minecraft update. Consoles also have no Add Server button, so console players join with a workaround like BedrockConnect. Our guide to joining a Bedrock server on Xbox, PS5 and Switch covers each option.

Can Java and Bedrock players play on the same server?

Yes, with a Java server running Geyser and Floodgate. Geyser translates Bedrock's protocol to Java's, and Floodgate lets Bedrock players join without owning Java Edition. Bedrock players connect to the server's Geyser port, Java players to the normal one, and everyone shares the same world.

It is not perfect. Some Java only features look or behave differently for Bedrock players, combat differs, and Geyser needs updates after Bedrock releases. For most survival groups it works well. Setup is in how to let Bedrock players join a Java server.

There is no reverse option: Java players cannot join a Bedrock Dedicated Server.

Which is cheaper, a Java or Bedrock server?

Bedrock, slightly, because it needs less RAM for the same group. For a plain survival world both start at the same small plan:

Group Java plan Bedrock plan
Up to 10 friends, vanilla 2 GB, 4.99 USD 2 GB, 4.99 USD
10 to 25 players, plugins or add-ons 4 GB, 9.99 USD 4 GB, 9.99 USD
Modpack or big crowd 8 GB, 19.99 USD or 12 GB, 29.99 USD 6 GB, 14.99 USD for 25 to 50 players

What changed in 2026 for both editions?

Both editions moved to year based version numbers in 2026 (Java 26.x, Bedrock 26.xx) and now ship game drops on the same day. The latest, Wilderness Bound, arrived on September 15, 2026 as Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50. Both editions now also turn the allowlist on by default on new servers. Details are in our Minecraft 26.3 server update and Bedrock 26.50 server update articles.

Hosting either on GamezServers

Both run on the same dashboard with one click backups, a live console and buttons for whitelisting and op. Java servers switch between Paper, Purpur, Vanilla, Fabric, Forge and NeoForge from the panel, and Bedrock servers update to the newest version with Update game.
