Connecting

How to join your Factorio server

  1. 1

Open Factorio on the same version as your server.

  2. 2

Click Play, then Multiplayer, then Connect to address.

  3. 3

Paste the server address, including the port, and click Connect.

  4. 4

If the server runs mods, accept the prompt to sync them and Factorio downloads the rest.

Common problems

Version mismatch

Factorio and the server must be on the exact same version. On Steam, pick the matching version under Properties, Betas.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 90 minutes with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Mods and plugins

Modding your Factorio server

Add mods from the Factorio mod portal and the server loads them on the next restart. Players do not install anything by hand: when they join, Factorio offers to download the exact mods and versions the server runs. Space Age, Quality and Elevated Rails are switched on the same way.

About

Factorio server hosting, explained

Factorio has a dedicated headless server built by Wube Software. It runs the same simulation as the game without graphics or sound, so a small amount of memory keeps a factory ticking around the clock. Because Factorio is fully deterministic, every player runs the whole map on their own machine and the server keeps everyone in lockstep, which is why a fast single CPU core matters more for smooth play than a big pile of RAM.

Running the server yourself means downloading the headless build, writing a server-settings.json by hand, creating a save from the command line and forwarding UDP port 34197 on your router. A hosted server does all of that for you: pick a plan, set a name and password, and your map is online even when the player who started it is asleep. Nobody has to keep a PC on to let the night shift keep building.

Memory grows with the size of your map and the mods you load. A fresh vanilla world fits comfortably in 2 GB, Space Age with several planets and busy logistics networks wants 4 GB, and megabases or large overhaul mods are happiest on 8 GB. Upload an existing save to continue a factory you started in single player, and upgrade from the dashboard if the base outgrows its plan.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do players need the same mods?

Factorio downloads the server mods for each player automatically when they join.

Can I run Space Age?

Yes. Turn on Space Age from the panel. Every player who joins a Space Age map needs to own the expansion.

Can I upload my single player save?

Yes. Upload the save zip from your Factorio saves folder and the server loads it on the next start, mods and all.

How many players can join?

Factorio has no hard player cap. Our plans are sized for 8, 16 and 32 players, and the real limit is how busy your factory is.

Why does the game lag when the base gets huge?

Factorio runs the whole map on every machine, so late game slowdown usually comes from UPS, not the server. Fewer bots, trains and belts on screen help, and so does a faster plan for the host side.

Can I password protect the server?

Yes. Set a game password in the panel, or leave it open and make it public so it shows in the in game server browser.

Are your servers protected from DDoS attacks?

Yes. Every server on every plan sits behind always on DDoS protection at no extra cost, so attacks and booters do not knock your group offline.

When can I get help?

Any time. Support is 24/7, and the people answering run game servers every day. Email support@gamezservers.com whenever you need us.

Will my server lag?

Our servers run on fast game hardware on low latency networks for smooth, low ping play. If your group grows or adds heavy mods, upgrade in one click and keep your world.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
