RuneScape: Dragonwilds supports up to 4 players in a world hosted from the game (the host plus three friends) and up to 6 players on a dedicated server. Jagex raised dedicated servers to 6 in update 0.11 in March 2026, and since the 1.0 release on 15 September 2026 both kinds of world support crossplay between PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. There is no setting that goes above 6.

Short answer

Way to play Players World online when the host leaves?
Single player 1 Not applicable
Co-op hosted in game Up to 4 No, it closes with the host
Dedicated server Up to 6 Yes

Co-op hosted from the game

The simplest way to play together: one player loads their world as a multiplayer world and the others join. It is free and needs no setup, but it has two limits:

  • 4 players at most, the host included.
  • The world only exists while the host plays. When they quit, everyone is sent back to the menu, and nobody can play in that world until the host comes back.

For a duo or a trio who always play together, that is often fine.

Dedicated servers: up to 6 players

A dedicated server runs the world on its own, without anyone hosting it from their game. Jagex's dedicated server guide says the server supports up to 6 players as of update 0.11. That gives you:

  • Two extra slots over in game co-op.
  • A world that is always available. Anyone in the group can log in and keep questing, gathering or building without waiting for the owner.
  • Crossplay, so a mixed group of PC and console players can share one persistent world. Consoles cannot run the server themselves, so for a console group a dedicated server is the only way to get an always online world. See Dragonwilds crossplay on a dedicated server.

Jagex has not added a setting to raise the cap past 6. If your group is bigger, the realistic options are two worlds or a rotation.

How much RAM per player?

Jagex's rule for the dedicated server is 2 GB plus 1 GB per player:

Players RAM
2 4 GB
4 6 GB
6 8 GB

The server runs on 64 bit Windows or Linux. On a home PC, remember that memory comes on top of whatever the PC is doing, including running the game itself if you play on the same machine.

Which setup should your group use?

  • 2 or 3 players who always play together: in game co-op is enough.
  • A group of 4 where people play at different times: a dedicated server, so nobody waits for the host.
  • 5 or 6 players: a dedicated server is the only option.
  • Any group with console players who wants an always online world: a dedicated server.

Does everyone need to own the game?

Yes. Every player needs their own copy of RuneScape: Dragonwilds on their platform. The dedicated server tool is free from Jagex, so nothing extra is needed for the server itself.

How friends join a dedicated world

  1. Open the Worlds screen and go to the Public tab.
  2. Search for the exact world name. It is case sensitive.
  3. Enter the world password if there is one, pick a character and join.

Anyone already in the world can also share its invite code from the pause menu. Jagex lists one known issue: inviting players through Steam invites does not connect to dedicated servers yet, so use the world name or the invite code. If the world does not appear, see Dragonwilds server not showing up.

Moving your co-op world to a server

You do not have to start over to get the extra slots. Copy the world's .sav file from your PC to the server's save folder, and players search for the file name. Step by step in how to transfer a Dragonwilds world to a dedicated server.

Our plans follow Jagex's RAM rule, so each plan matches a group size:

Plan RAM Players Price
Starter 4 GB 2 9.99 USD a month
Standard 6 GB 4 14.99 USD a month
Pro 8 GB 6 19.99 USD a month

Start small and upgrade from the dashboard when more friends join. It is prorated and the world stays the same. Crossplay is on, and you paste your Player ID at checkout so the server knows you are the owner.

A full world of six splitting the Pro plan at checkout pays about 4.33 USD each a month, including the 1 USD share fee, and new customers get 50% off the first month. See RuneScape: Dragonwilds server hosting, or the Dragonwilds hosting quick start for a walk through.

FAQ

Can 8 players play Dragonwilds together?

Not in one world. Dedicated servers top out at 6 and in game co-op at 4. A group of 8 needs two worlds.

Is Dragonwilds single player?

It can be. You can play the whole game solo, and bring friends in whenever you like, either in co-op or by moving the world to a dedicated server.

Can PlayStation and Xbox players join the same world?

Yes. Since 1.0, worlds can be crossplay, so PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 players can share one world, hosted in game or on a dedicated server.

Do I need to be online for friends to play on a dedicated server?

No. That is the main point of a dedicated server. The world stays up and anyone can join at any time.

Who controls the dedicated world?

The owner, whose Player ID is set on the server, plus anyone who enters the admin password in game. See how to become admin on a Dragonwilds server.
