The best Source engine games to host a server for are Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, Counter-Strike: Source, Left 4 Dead 2, Black Mesa, No More Room in Hell, Insurgency, Fistful of Frags, Open Fortress and IOSoccer, with Counter-Strike 2 on Source 2 as the modern option. They share one toolbox: a server.cfg, a map cycle, RCON, and Metamod:Source with SourceMod for plugins. Learn it once and you can run any of them. Most run on 1 to 4 GB of RAM.
That shared toolbox is the best reason to pick a Source game for your first server. The same admin plugin, the same config habits and often the same plugin authors work across all of them. A community that starts on TF2 can open a Left 4 Dead 2 server next week without learning anything new.

1. Team Fortress 2
Free, still busy and built on community servers. 24 slots, nine classes, and custom modes from trade servers to Prop Hunt and Versus Saxton Hale. SourceMod plugins handle admin, stats, map votes and custom game modes.
- RAM: 2 GB on stock maps, 4 GB with SourceMod and custom maps.
- Read next: how to install SourceMod on a Team Fortress 2 server.
2. Garry's Mod
The most flexible Source game. A Workshop collection ID in the panel pulls every addon on start, and gamemodes from TTT to DarkRP each turn the server into a different game. Gmod uses Lua addons and ULX rather than SourceMod for most admin work.
- RAM: 4 GB for TTT or Sandbox, 8 GB with a full Workshop collection.
3. Counter-Strike: Source
Surf, bhop, jailbreak, zombie escape, deathrun and gun game all live on CS: Source servers, and plenty of players prefer its movement to CS2's. We make the Steam server token at setup.
- RAM: 2 GB for a private 5v5, 4 GB for 24 to 32 slots with SourceMod.
- Read next: how to install SourceMod on a Counter-Strike: Source server.
4. Left 4 Dead 2
Its modding scene is still strong. Slot plugins let co-op run with eight or more survivors, competitive configs bring ready up to Versus, and Workshop campaigns give you new maps. Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 in server.cfg so players can join by address.
- RAM: 2 GB stock, 3 GB for eight player co-op with plugins.

5. Black Mesa
The Half-Life remake has a deathmatch mode on classic maps like Crossfire and Bounce, and with Metamod, SourceMod and the SourceCoop plugin a group can play the whole campaign together. Everyone needs Black Mesa on Steam.
- RAM: 2 GB for a deathmatch, 4 GB for 32 players or co-op.
- Read next: how to play Black Mesa co-op on a dedicated server.
6. No More Room in Hell
Free zombie co-op for 8 with scarce ammo and infection. A September 2026 update added 64-bit support and Steam Networking, and the familiar Source setup with server.cfg and SourceMod still applies.
- RAM: 1 GB on official maps.
7. Insurgency
The 2014 Source shooter before Sandstorm. PvP modes run up to 32 and co-op modes put a squad against bots. Theater files let you change weapons and classes, a level of control few shooters give you.
- RAM: 2 GB for co-op against bots, 3 GB for full PvP.
8. Fistful of Frags
A free Western shooter with revolvers, dynamite and eight official modes. Still getting updates in 2026.
- RAM: 2 GB for a small group, 4 GB for a public server with bots.
9. Open Fortress
Started as a TF2 mod and grew into a fast arena shooter with bunny hopping and its own weapons. Free deathmatch is its heart. Players need TF2 and Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer, both free, to run the alpha.
- RAM: 2 GB for a friend group deathmatch night.
10. IOSoccer
A free volunteer made soccer game on Source. Clubs run their own servers for scrims and league matches with a fixed tickrate, password and RCON admins.
- RAM: 2 GB for pickup games.
Counter-Strike 2 on Source 2
CS2 runs on Source 2, so the classic SourceMod does not work. Its plugin scene uses Metamod:Source with CounterStrikeSharp instead. The config habits carry over: server.cfg, RCON and map groups. See how to install CounterStrikeSharp plugins on a CS2 server.
The Source toolbox in five lines
- server.cfg in the game's cfg folder holds hostname, passwords, rates and cvars.
- mapcycle.txt sets the rotation.
- RCON lets admins run console commands remotely with rcon_password.
- Metamod:Source loads plugin frameworks, and SourceMod adds admin commands, votes and thousands of plugins.
- A Steam server token (GSLT) lets most of these show in the server browser. We create it for you where the game needs one.

Host a Source server
Source servers are cheap and light, and the panel gives you what SourceMod admins expect: a file manager and SFTP for the addons folder, a live console, start and restart, and one click backups before a plugin update. It is live in about a minute, and you can switch game from the panel when your community wants to try another Source title. Start with Team Fortress 2 or browse all games.
