Common problems
Black Mesa hides the developer console by default. Turn it on in Options, Keyboard, Advanced before trying to connect.
Players need every custom map the server runs. Share the Workshop links with your group before switching to a new map, since downloading big maps from the server on join is slow.
After a Black Mesa update, SourceMod plugins like SourceCoop can break until their authors update. Take a backup before updating and check the plugin's release page.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Modding your Black Mesa server
Black Mesa servers run Workshop maps and the usual Source server stack. Metamod and SourceMod add admin tools and plugins, and SourceCoop turns the campaign into co-op.
Black Mesa server hosting, explained
Black Mesa is Crowbar Collective's ground up remake of Half-Life, finished in 2020 with the full Xen chapters. Next to the campaign it ships a deathmatch mode with remade versions of classic Half-Life multiplayer maps: crowbars, MP5 grenades, satchel charges, tau cannon jumps and long jump modules across Crossfire and Bounce. Servers usually run free for all or team deathmatch, and they make a great Half-Life nostalgia night.
The other big reason to run a server is co-op. With Metamod, SourceMod and the SourceCoop plugin, a group can play through the Black Mesa campaign together, from the tram ride to Xen, with checkpoints and respawns. Deathmatch communities, speedrun friends and groups who have always wanted to replay Half-Life together all use dedicated servers for this. Everyone still needs their own copy of Black Mesa on Steam.
Black Mesa runs on the Source engine, so the server works the way Source players expect. The panel sets the default map, max players and automatic updates. server.cfg, map cycles, admin lists and SourceMod plugins live in the server files, which you edit in the file manager or over SFTP. The live console in the panel takes the usual commands for changing maps, kicking and banning.
Source servers do not use much memory. A small deathmatch group runs on 2 GB, 4 GB covers a full 32 player server or a co-op campaign, and 6 GB gives room for co-op with several plugins plus a large Workshop map rotation. The server starts fast, map changes take seconds, and you can change plans at any time if you start running plugins. Most deathmatch groups never need more than the smallest plan.

Common questions
How many players can a Black Mesa server hold?
Deathmatch servers run up to 32 players, and the server starts at 32. Lower Max Players if you prefer smaller matches.
Can we play the Black Mesa campaign in co-op?
Not in the base game, which only has deathmatch multiplayer. The community SourceCoop plugin adds campaign co-op once Metamod:Source and SourceMod are installed on the server.
How do I install SourceMod?
Upload Metamod:Source and SourceMod into the server's bms folder with the file manager or SFTP, then restart. Add your Steam ID to admins_simple.ini for admin rights.
How do I change the starting map?
Set Default Map in the panel, for example dm_crossfire, and restart. Use changelevel in the console to switch maps while it runs.
Can I use Workshop maps?
Yes. Black Mesa has Steam Workshop support, and Workshop or custom maps can be added to the server. Players need the same map, so share the Workshop link with your group.
How do I make the server private?
Set sv_password in server.cfg and restart. Players then need the password to connect.
How much RAM does a Black Mesa server need?
2 GB for small deathmatch games, 4 GB for 32 players or co-op, and 6 GB for co-op with plugins and lots of custom maps.
Is GamezServers affiliated with Black Mesa?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated Black Mesa server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
