Common problems
Just started and not in the server browser yet? Valve's list can take a few minutes. Use connect in the console meanwhile.
Plugins not loading? Type meta list and sm plugins list in the console. If Metamod does not answer, check that metamod.vdf is in tf/addons.
Changed server.cfg and nothing happened? It runs on map change. Use exec server.cfg in the console or change map.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Modding your Team Fortress 2 server
Almost every TF2 community server runs Metamod:Source and SourceMod, with plugins from AlliedModders for admin tools, voting and custom game modes. Maps come from the Steam Workshop or community map sites.
Team Fortress 2 server hosting, explained
Team Fortress 2 is Valve's class based team shooter, and community servers have kept it going since 2007. Two teams pick from nine classes and fight over payload carts, control points and intelligence briefcases. Valve's casual matchmaking only gets you random 12v12 games. Community servers are where the variety lives: 2fort around the clock, trade servers, jump maps, MGE duels, custom modes and quiet servers with the same regulars every night.
Your own server means your own rules and your own crowd. Communities run one to keep a friendly place with active admins, competitive teams use one for 6v6 or Highlander scrims, and friend groups lock one with a password for private games. A server that stays up builds regulars, and regulars are what make a TF2 server feel alive. Community servers are also where custom modes live, from Prop Hunt to Versus Saxton Hale.
In the panel you set the Default Map. Everything else is in the files: server.cfg for rules, mapcycle.txt for the rotation, and the addons folder for Metamod and SourceMod, all reachable in the file manager or over SFTP. Workshop maps load with changelevel workshop and the map ID from the console. We make the Steam login token for you, so the server shows up in the browser from the first start.
A Source engine server does not need much. 2 GB runs 24 players on stock maps. A community server with SourceMod, a dozen plugins and custom maps is comfortable on 4 GB. Only a heavy plugin stack with a big custom map pool calls for 8 GB. If you outgrow a plan, switch to the next one in the panel and the price is prorated. Friends can also split the bill, up to 10 people each paying their share, which suits a community server nicely.

Common questions
How many players can my TF2 server have?
The server starts with 24 slots, the standard size for community TF2 and enough for 12v12. You can show fewer slots with sv_visiblemaxplayers in server.cfg.
Do I need a Steam server token?
No. We make the Steam game server login token for your server automatically, so it lists publicly without you creating one.
Can I install SourceMod and plugins?
Yes. Upload Metamod:Source and SourceMod into tf/addons with SFTP or the file manager, add plugins to the plugins folder and restart.
How do I make myself a SourceMod admin?
Add your Steam ID to addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini with the flags you want, then restart or reload admins from the console.
Can I run Workshop maps?
Yes. Use changelevel workshop/ followed by the map's Workshop ID in the console, and the server downloads it. Players get it when they join.
How do players connect?
Open the developer console and type connect with your server address, or add it to Favorites in the Community Servers browser.
Do players need to buy TF2?
No. Team Fortress 2 is free to play on Steam, so anyone can install it and join your server.
Can I run a password protected scrim server?
Yes. Put sv_password in server.cfg, load your league's config, and only your two teams can get in.
Is GamezServers affiliated with Team Fortress 2?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated Team Fortress 2 server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
