Top 10 Survival Games to Play With Friends in 2026

The best survival games are better with friends, and the best way to play them with friends is on a world that stays online when the host logs off. Every game on this list supports dedicated servers, so nobody has to leave their PC running and nobody is locked out when the host is busy. Player counts are for dedicated servers unless noted.

How we picked

We looked for three things: co-op or group play that is genuinely better than solo, official dedicated server support, and a game that is still actively updated in 2026. Several of these hit 1.0 this year, which makes it a very good time to start a new world.

1. Valheim

Valheim is still the easiest survival game to recommend to a mixed group. You wash up in a Norse afterlife, build longhouses, sail between islands and take on bosses together, and the difficulty sliders let casual and hardcore players share one world. It feels made for five or six friends on a weeknight.

2. Minecraft: Java Edition

Nothing else lets a group decide what kind of survival game they want to play. Vanilla survival, a plugin server with land claims and an economy, or a 400 mod pack with factories and magic: it is all the same server. It also runs on modest hardware and nearly everyone already owns it.

3. Palworld

Palworld reached 1.0 in July 2026 with the World Tree region, a much bigger map and new ways to power up your Pals. Catching Pals and putting them to work in your base is still the hook, and on a shared server everyone's bases and Pals live in one persistent world instead of a four player co-op session.

4. Enshrouded

Enshrouded mixes voxel building you can reshape block by block with proper action RPG combat and a big, handcrafted world to explore. The full 1.0 release is due on 15 October 2026, so a server started now carries your group straight into it.

5. Rust

Rust is survival with the gloves off. Everyone starts with a rock, and every other player is a potential ally or threat. It shines on your own server, where you choose the map, gather rates, wipe schedule and plugins, whether that is a relaxed PvE server for your friends or a full pop community.

6. Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid is the zombie game about how you actually die. Multiplayer arrived on the stable branch with Build 42.20 in July 2026, bringing crafting, animals and the reworked map to servers. Surviving a Knox County winter as a group, with one person on carpentry and another on medicine, is one of the great co-op experiences.

7. 7 Days to Die

Scavenge and build by day, then defend your base against a horde on every seventh night. Building a kill corridor together and watching it hold (or fail) is the best part. Since 1.0 the game is out of its very long early access and in a much more polished state.

8. ARK: Survival Ascended

Taming, riding and breeding dinosaurs is still a unique hook, and ARK: Survival Ascended rebuilt the classic maps in Unreal Engine 5. It is a big time investment, which is exactly why a private server matters: you can raise taming and breeding rates so your group actually sees the late game.

9. DayZ

DayZ is the survival game where other players are the story. Scavenging on Chernarus, meeting a stranger and not knowing if they will help or shoot is still unmatched. Community servers decide everything from loot to base building mods, and DayZ has no player hosted multiplayer, so a dedicated server is the only way to have your own.

10. RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Dragonwilds takes the RuneScape world and skills into a co-op survival crafting game in the new region of Ashenfall. It left early access with 1.0 on 15 September 2026 and brought crossplay across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. It is ideal for a small, tight group.

Honourable mentions

• Terraria: 2D, but still one of the best co-op adventures ever made, and tiny to host.
• Satisfactory: less about survival, more about building an absurd factory together. Pure joy for engineering minded groups.
• Hytale: in early access and changing fast. We are adding it soon.

Why a dedicated server makes these better

In most of these games, co-op without a server means one player hosts. When they log off, everyone else is kicked, and progress only happens when they are online.
