Pay yearly only if you are confident the server will still be in use when you pass the break even point. On GamezServers a year costs 10 months' price, so yearly wins once you would have kept the server for more than 10 months. If your group might drop the game in a few months, monthly is cheaper in practice even though each month costs more on paper. Six month billing sits in between at 5.5 months' price.
The math is simple. The hard part is being honest about how long your group will keep playing. Here is how to work it out.
The break even formula
For any host, find what the longer term costs in months of the monthly price:
break even months = longer term price / monthly price
If a year costs 10 monthly payments, you need to keep the server more than 10 months for the year to pay off. If a year costs 11 monthly payments, the break even point is 11 months, and the saving is small.
Then ask: what are the odds we are still playing this game in month 11?
GamezServers billing lengths compared
| Length | Costs | Per month equivalent | Break even vs monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | 1 month's price | full price | none |
| 6 months | 5.5 months' price | about 8% less | after 5.5 months |
| 1 year | 10 months' price | about 17% less | after 10 months |
On real plans:
| Plan | Monthly x 12 | 6 months x 2 | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 GB (9.99/mo) | 119.88 | about 109.90 | 99.90 |
| 8 GB (19.99/mo) | 239.88 | about 219.90 | 199.90 |
| 12 GB (29.99/mo) | 359.88 | about 329.90 | 299.90 |
| 16 GB (39.99/mo) | 479.88 | about 439.90 | 399.90 |
New customers also get a first payment deal, so the first year is a bit cheaper than these numbers on any length.
Who should pick monthly
- Groups trying a new game. Most friend groups play a survival game hard for a few weeks, then drift. Paying monthly lets you stop when the group stops.
- Anyone unsure of the right size. You can change plans on any length, but a smaller commitment means less to worry about.
- Seasonal players. If you play Valheim when a big update lands and leave it otherwise, monthly lets you come and go. See how to pause a game server.
- Split servers with a rotating group. If people join and leave the split, shorter periods keep everyone's share fair.
Who should pick yearly
- Long running communities. A Minecraft SMP that has been going for a year, a Rust server with a monthly wipe schedule, a FiveM roleplay server with regulars.
- Discord groups with a home server. If the server is the place your community meets, it will outlive any one game. On a host that lets you switch games on the same plan, yearly is less of a bet on one game.
- Anyone who would pay monthly for 11 months anyway. You might as well take 2 months off.
The risks of paying up front
Before choosing a long term, check these four things on any host:
- What happens if you cancel early? Most hosts, including us, do not refund the unused part of a renewal. The server runs until the end of the paid period.
- Is there a refund window for the first purchase? Ours is the first 10% of the period for new customers: 72 hours on monthly, 18 days on 6 months, 36 days on a year.
- Can you change plans inside the term? If your group grows, you want to upgrade with a prorated charge, not buy a new year.
- Can you change games inside the term? A year on a game your group quits in month three is wasted unless you can move the plan to another game.
A quick decision test
Answer these honestly:
| Question | Yes points to |
|---|---|
| Have we played this game together for more than 3 months? | Yearly |
| Do more than 4 people use the server every week? | Yearly |
| Is this a new game for the group? | Monthly |
| Is one person paying for everyone? | Monthly, or split it |
| Do we have a server we always come back to? | Yearly |
If you got mostly "monthly", start monthly. You can switch to a longer length later from the control panel and pay only the difference after your unused time is counted.
Monthly vs yearly on a split bill
On a split server, each friend pays their share for whatever length the server uses. A yearly split asks everyone to commit for a year, which is harder to agree on. Many groups start monthly, then switch once the server has proven itself. Read game server hosting you can split with friends for how shares work.
What about prepaid?
Prepaid is different from a subscription: you pay once for a fixed time and nothing renews. It suits groups who hate surprise renewals, or want a server for a set stretch. It is compared in prepaid vs subscription.
Switching lengths on GamezServers
Start on any length at checkout. Already on monthly and ready to commit? Open your server's control panel and switch to a longer subscription: you are charged today, minus the unused part of your current period. Every length includes the same backups, DDoS protection, SFTP and support, and there are no contracts beyond the period you choose. Details are in our billing docs, and plans for each game are on the games page.

FAQ
Is yearly game server hosting worth it?
If you will keep the server for more than 10 months, yes, on a host where a year costs 10 months. If not, monthly is cheaper overall.
Can I get a refund on a yearly game server if we stop playing?
Usually only within the host's first purchase window. After that, cancelling stops the renewal but the server runs until the end of the year you paid for.
Can I switch from yearly to monthly?
You can cancel the yearly renewal and start monthly when the year ends. Check how your host handles it, since the paid year is normally not refunded.
Does yearly billing get better hardware?
No. The length changes the price, not the server. Same plan, same resources.
