How to Pause a Game Server to Save Money (Keep Your World)
Taking a break from a game? How to stop paying for a server without losing the world: download and cancel, drop to a small plan, or go prepaid.

Most game hosts do not have a true pause button that stops billing while keeping the server, so "pausing" means picking one of three moves. For a long break, download the world, cancel, and upload it to a new server when the group comes back. For a short or uncertain break, drop to the smallest plan the world still runs on. For a known return date, cancel the subscription now and buy prepaid time when you return. In every case, the step that protects you is having your own copy of the world.
Here is how each option works, what it costs, and how to bring the world back.
Why there is usually no pause button
A paused server still takes disk space for the world and the game install, and many hosts reserve the server's slot on a machine. So hosts either keep billing, offer a smaller plan, or delete files some time after you stop paying. Check your host's policy on what happens after cancelling before you rely on it. Our guide on what happens to your world when a subscription ends covers the usual policies.
Option 1: download the world and cancel
Best for: breaks of a month or more, or "we might never come back".
Cost while paused: nothing.
Steps:
- Make a backup from the control panel so there is a clean save point.
- Stop the server so the save files are not being written while you copy them.
- Download the world folder. Use the file manager to download it as a zip, or SFTP for big worlds. Our download your world guide lists the folder for each game.
- Also save configs and mod lists:
server.propertiesfor Minecraft, the.inifiles for Project Zomboid, your ValheimBepInExfolder, Workshop collection IDs, and admin or whitelist files. - Check the zip opens on your PC.
- Cancel the subscription. The server keeps running until the end of the period you paid for, so the group can keep playing until then.
Coming back: buy a new server for the same game, stop it, upload the world and configs, and start it. Our guide on moving your world to a hosted server has the steps for each game. If the game updated while you were away, update mods too.
Option 2: drop to the smallest plan
Best for: a few weeks off, or when some people still log in now and then.
Cost while paused: the smallest plan the world loads on.
A world that needed 8 GB for 10 players with mods often starts fine on less with nobody online. The server stays up, the address stays the same, and nobody has to touch files.
Steps:
- Back up.
- Change to a smaller plan in the server settings.
- Restart and check the world loads and you can join.
- When the group returns, upgrade again. On hosts with prorated billing, you pay only the difference for the days left.
Do not shrink below what the game needs to start. ARK: Survival Ascended and Palworld need a lot of memory even when empty. See when to downgrade a game server for safe steps.
Option 3: cancel now, prepaid later
Best for: a known return date, such as a new season, a big game update or the school holidays.
- Download your world as in option 1.
- Cancel the subscription.
- When you come back, buy prepaid time for exactly how long you plan to play. Nothing renews, so the next pause takes care of itself. See prepaid vs subscription.
Option 4: switch the server to another game
If the group is not taking a break from playing, only from one game, you do not need to pause at all. Some hosts let you move the same plan to a different game. Your old world is backed up first, and you keep paying the same price for something people actually play. See one game server for multiple games.
Cost comparison for a 3 month break
Using an 8 GB plan at 19.99 USD a month as the example:
| Option | Cost over 3 months | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Keep paying, nobody plays | about 60 USD | none |
| Drop to 4 GB (9.99) | about 30 USD | a few minutes |
| Download and cancel | 0 USD | 15 to 30 minutes now, again on return |
| Switch to another game | same 60 USD, but used | a few minutes |
Mistakes that lose worlds
- Cancelling without downloading. Hosts delete files after cancellation, sometimes within days.
- Copying while the server runs. Saves can be half written. Stop the server first.
- Only keeping the world, not the mods. A modded world may not load without the exact mod versions it was saved with.
- Keeping the only copy on the server. A host backup disappears with the server.
- Forgetting the game version. If the game updated a lot, an old world may need converting, or a beta branch of the server.
Pausing on GamezServers
GamezServers has three ways to take a break:
- Cancel in the control panel under Settings. The server runs until the end of what you paid for, then its files are kept for 14 days in case you change your mind, then deleted. Download the world before then.
- Change to a smaller plan of the same game in Settings. Downgrades are immediate, and the unused difference comes off your next bill.
- Switch game in Settings to another game with a plan of the same memory. We back up the current world first.
When you come back, a new server is live in about a minute for most games, and new customers get 50% off the first month. See our billing docs or start from the games page.

FAQ
Can I pause my game server subscription?
Most hosts do not offer a billing pause. Downloading the world and cancelling, or dropping to a small plan, gives the same result.
How long do hosts keep files after cancelling?
It varies by host, from a few days to a few weeks. On GamezServers it is 14 days after the paid time ends.
Will my world work if I upload it months later?
Usually, if you keep the mods and the game has not had a breaking update. Big updates can need a world conversion or a fresh map region.
Does sleep mode stop billing?
Not usually. Sleep stops the server when it is empty, but the plan is still paid for. It saves resources, not money.
