To host a CS2 server with GamezServers, pick a plan, pay, and your Counter-Strike 2 server is live in about 60 seconds with its own address. You skip the 60 GB download, SteamCMD and port forwarding. This guide covers every step, from choosing a plan and adding your Game Server Login Token to game modes, Workshop maps, practice settings and admins.

Step 1: Pick the right CS2 plan

CS2 needs far less memory than survival games. What matters is a fast CPU and a good network, and every plan runs in a data center. Prices are 2.50 USD per GB of RAM a month.

Plan RAM vCPU Players Price a month Good for
Starter (popular) 4 GB 2 up to 10 9.99 USD 5v5 scrims, practice, wingman with friends
Standard 6 GB 2 up to 16 14.99 USD Community server with plugins
Pro 8 GB 2 up to 32 19.99 USD Deathmatch, retakes or surf with a full lobby

For a 5v5 or a practice server, Starter is plenty. Take Standard if you plan to run CounterStrikeSharp plugins for a community, and Pro for 32 player deathmatch or surf. New customers get 50% off the first month, so Starter is about 5 USD to start. More help in choosing a plan.

Step 2: Split the bill with your team (optional)

A scrim server is perfect for splitting. At checkout choose Split with friends and pick 2 to 10 people.

  • You pay your share and the server starts straight away.
  • Each teammate gets their own payment link and pays by card when they are ready. Every share that comes in keeps the server running longer.
  • Each share includes a 1 USD fee. A Starter plan split five ways is roughly 3 USD each.
  • If you are a new customer, your friends also get 50% off their first month.
  • If someone leaves, the remaining shares go up (never past the full price), and everyone is emailed first.

Teammates who create an account with the email they paid with get the server in their own dashboard, with the console, actions and files.

Step 3: Pay and copy your address

Name the server, sign in or create an account on the same page, and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stripe. You land on your dashboard, where the server shows Setting up for about a minute and then Online.

Open it to reach the control panel. The address is at the top, for example 203.0.113.10:27015. Click to copy it.

Step 4: Add your Game Server Login Token

A CS2 server needs a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) to accept players from the internet and show in the Community Server Browser. It is free:

  1. Go to steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers and sign in with Steam.
  2. Enter app ID 730 and a memo like "scrim server", then create the token.
  3. Paste the token in the panel and restart the server.

Your Steam account must not be limited (it needs at least 5 USD spent on Steam), needs a phone number on it, and must not be community banned. Each running server needs its own token. If the console shows a token error after a restart, see CS2 server GSLT token errors.

Step 5: How players join

  1. In Counter-Strike 2, open Settings, then Game, and set Enable Developer Console to Yes.
  2. Press the ~ key to open the console.
  3. If your server has a password, type password followed by it and press Enter.
  4. Type connect followed by the address, for example connect 203.0.113.10:27015, and press Enter.

Being kicked straight back to the menu usually means the password step was skipped.

Step 6: Set up server.cfg

Open the Files tab and go to game/csgo/cfg/. Create or edit server.cfg, which runs every time a map loads:

hostname "Friday Scrims"
sv_password "changeme"
mp_autoteambalance 0
mp_limitteams 0
  • hostname: the name in the server browser.
  • sv_password: leave it empty for a public server, or set one so only your group can join.
  • mp_autoteambalance and mp_limitteams: set both to 0 for scrims so teams can be uneven while people arrive.

For match rules such as round time or overtime, put your overrides in gamemode_competitive_server.cfg in the same folder so game updates do not overwrite them.

Step 7: Change game modes and maps

The Change map button in the panel loads any official map, for example de_mirage. To switch mode, set the game type and mode in the console, then change map:

game_type 1; game_mode 2; changelevel de_dust2
Mode game_type game_mode
Casual 0 0
Competitive 0 1
Wingman 0 2
Arms Race 1 0
Deathmatch 1 2

The Restart match and End warmup buttons handle the usual pre game routine, and Broadcast sends a message to everyone.

For Workshop maps, run host_workshop_map followed by the map's Workshop ID in the console. The server downloads it and players get it when they connect. Collections, map rotations and common errors are in how to play CS2 Workshop maps on a server.

Step 8: Practice mode and bots

A private server is the best place to learn smokes. Turn on sv_cheats 1, infinite ammo and grenade trajectories with a practice config you load in one command. Our CS2 practice server config has a ready to paste file. Want to play as a group against bots instead? See how to play CS2 with friends and bots.

Step 9: Plugins and admins

Community servers run plugins through Metamod:Source with CounterStrikeSharp on top, which powers retakes, practice mode, admin menus and match systems. Upload them with the file manager or SFTP into game/csgo/addons. Metamod is loaded by a line in game/csgo/gameinfo.gi, and CS2 updates can overwrite that file, so check your plugins after every big patch.

You do not need RCON to admin your own server: the panel console runs any server command. For in game admin commands through CounterStrikeSharp plugins, add yourself to addons/counterstrikesharp/configs/admins.json:

{
  "YourName": {
    "identity": "76561198000000000",
    "flags": ["@css/root"]
  }
}

Step 10: Backups, Sleep when empty and upgrades

  • Backups: press Backup before changing configs or plugins. You keep 3.
  • Sleep when empty: the server stops after 90 minutes with nobody on it, and anyone with access starts it in one click. Ideal for a scrim server you use a few nights a week. Turn it off in Settings for a public community server.
  • Upgrading: outgrown Starter? Pick a bigger plan in Settings. It is prorated and the new RAM applies after a restart.
