A Counter-Strike 2 server costs about 10 to 20 USD a month hosted: 4 GB (9.99 USD) covers 5v5 scrims, practice and wingman with friends, 6 GB (14.99 USD) a community server with plugins for up to 16 players, and 8 GB (19.99 USD) a full 32 player deathmatch, retakes or surf lobby. The server software and the Steam token it needs are free. Split across a 10 man, a 4 GB server is about 2 USD per player per month.

Matchmaking already gives you free servers to play on, so the question is what a server of your own is worth to your group. Here is the cost by use, and what you can do for free.

Cost by use

What you want Plan Monthly price
5v5 scrims, 10 mans, practice, wingman 4 GB 9.99 USD
Community server with plugins, up to 16 players 6 GB 14.99 USD
Deathmatch, retakes or surf, full 32 player lobby 8 GB 19.99 USD

New customers get 50% off the first month. A 3 day prepaid rental is an option for a one off tournament weekend, at about 2.50 USD on the 4 GB plan.

What drives CS2 server cost

A CS2 server is lighter than survival game servers: maps are fixed, and there is no ever growing world. What adds load:

  • Player count. More players means more to simulate and send each tick.
  • Plugins. Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp plugins for retakes, deathmatch, ranks and stats each add a little. See how to install CounterStrikeSharp plugins.
  • Workshop maps. Big custom maps take more memory than the standard pool. See playing Workshop maps on a server.
  • Bots. Each bot is simulated like a player.

What does not change cost: tick rate. CS2 uses sub tick and runs at 64 tick, and you cannot buy a "128 tick server". Our guide on CS2 tickrate and subtick explains why.

What is free

The server software and GSLT

The CS2 dedicated server installs free with SteamCMD. To show up publicly and let players connect from the internet, it needs a Game Server Login Token (GSLT), which you create for free on Steam's game server account management page using app ID 730. Your Steam account needs a phone number and must not be limited. If the token is missing or wrong, see CS2 server GSLT token error.

Playing with friends without a server

You can start a private match from your own game and invite friends through Steam, which is free and fine for casual games. Your PC is the server, so your connection decides everyone's experience, and the match ends when you leave. Our free CS2 server guide covers the free ways in detail.

Why groups pay for a CS2 server

  • 10 mans and scrims with your own config, map veto and overtime rules, on a neutral server that does not favor whoever hosts.
  • Practice: grenade lineups, infinite ammo, bots and no round timer. See our CS2 practice server config.
  • Community modes matchmaking does not have: retakes, surf, 1v1 arenas, custom deathmatch.
  • Always on: teammates can practice any time without you starting anything.

Cost per player

CS2 groups are often exactly 10. On a GamezServers split bill, each person pays an even share plus a 1 USD fee per share, with up to 10 payers:

Plan 5 players 10 players
4 GB (9.99) about 3.00 each about 2.00 each
6 GB (14.99) about 4.00 each about 2.50 each
8 GB (19.99) about 5.00 each about 3.00 each

Ways to spend less

  1. Pick the size for your use. A private 10 man does not need the 32 player plan.
  2. Keep plugins lean. Only run what your mode needs.
  3. Switch modes on the same server rather than renting one per mode. Retakes on Tuesday, scrims on Friday: change the config and plugins, not the server.
  4. Rent short for events. A tournament weekend does not need a month. See renting a game server for a weekend.

A CS2 server on GamezServers

GamezServers Counter-Strike 2 servers come in 4, 6 and 8 GB, live after the game installs, with their own address and always on DDoS protection. We make the GSLT for every server when it is set up, so there is no token to paste, and the name, password, start map and game mode are settings in the control panel. Change maps, restart matches and end warmup with one click. The file manager and SFTP take your configs and plugins, the live console takes server commands, and one click backups protect your setup. Split the bill with your team, each paying their own share.

FAQ

How much does a CS2 server cost?

About 10 USD a month for scrims and practice, 15 USD for a community server with plugins, and 20 USD for a full 32 player lobby.

Is a CS2 dedicated server free?

The software and the GSLT are free. Running it always on costs either a PC and internet at home or a hosting plan.

Can I pay more for a 128 tick CS2 server?

No. CS2 uses sub tick at 64 tick. A host offering 128 tick for CS2 is offering something the game does not support.

How many players can a 4 GB CS2 server hold?

A full 10 man with spectators and a few plugins. For 16 or 32 players with heavier plugins, use 6 or 8 GB.
