When Metamod stops loading on a CS2 server after an update, the cause is almost always that the update replaced game/csgo/gameinfo.gi and removed the Metamod line. Add Game csgo/addons/metamod back directly under Game_LowViolence csgo_lv, restart, and check with meta list. If Metamod loads but plugins do not, update CounterStrikeSharp.
What are the symptoms?
After a Valve patch, one or more of these show up:
- Typing
meta listin the server console returnsUnknown command "meta". css_plugins listreturnsUnknown command.- Retakes, practice mode, admin menus or match plugins simply are not there, but the server runs fine as vanilla CS2.
- Metamod loads, but CounterStrikeSharp logs errors about gamedata, signatures or offsets.
The first three mean Metamod itself is not loading. The last one means Metamod is fine and CounterStrikeSharp needs an update.
Why does Metamod stop loading after a CS2 update?
Metamod:Source for CS2 is loaded by a search path line in game/csgo/gameinfo.gi. That file belongs to the game, so when Valve ships an update that touches it, SteamCMD replaces it with the stock version, and the Metamod line is gone. Valve updates CS2 often, and the Rush Hour update on 22 September 2026 also updated the Source 2 engine, so this has been happening to a lot of servers recently.
Your plugins and configs in game/csgo/addons are not deleted. They are just never loaded.
How do I fix Metamod not loading in CS2?
- Stop the server.
- Open
game/csgo/gameinfo.giin a text editor. - Find the
SearchPathsblock and the lineGame_LowViolence csgo_lv. - Add this line directly under it:
Game csgo/addons/metamod
The block should then start like this:
SearchPaths
{
Game_LowViolence csgo_lv // Perfect World content override
Game csgo/addons/metamod
Game csgo
...
- Save and start the server.
- Check it worked: run
meta listin the console. You should see Metamod answer with a list of loaded plugins, including CounterStrikeSharp if you use it.
The line must sit above Game csgo. Search paths are read in order, and placing the Metamod line lower down stops it loading. Tabs or spaces both work between Game and the path.
What if meta list still says Unknown command?
Work through these in order:
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Folder layout | Metamod's files should be in game/csgo/addons/metamod. A common mistake is game/csgo/addons/addons/metamod from extracting the zip one level too deep |
| Right build | Metamod:Source 2.x is the branch for CS2. Older 1.x builds do not load in Source 2 |
| Up to date | After a big engine update, an older Metamod build may not load. Download the latest 2.x dev build from AlliedModders |
| Correct OS build | Linux servers need the Linux package and Windows servers the Windows package |
| Typos | csgo/addons/metamod, all lower case, no trailing slash |
Restart after every change. The server only reads gameinfo.gi at start.
Metamod loads but CounterStrikeSharp does not
When meta list works but CounterStrikeSharp is missing or throws errors, the cause is usually outdated gamedata. CounterStrikeSharp finds functions inside the game using signatures and offsets, and Valve updates move them. The fix is to update it:
- Download the latest CounterStrikeSharp release. Use the with runtime package if you are not sure your .NET runtime is current, since the official getting started guide recommends it for installs.
- Upload its
addonsfolder overgame/csgo/addons, replacing files. - Restart and run
meta list, thencss_plugins list.
CounterStrikeSharp's docs also list the minimum Metamod build it needs, so update Metamod at the same time if the release notes say so. On Linux, a missing libicu package can stop the .NET runtime starting. On Windows, the 64 bit Visual C++ Redistributable is required.
Individual plugins still broken?
If Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp both load but one plugin fails, the plugin itself needs updating for the new game build. Check its GitHub releases or forum thread. Plugins that hook game events or use their own signatures, such as retakes allocators or weapon restrictors, are the most likely to break. Our CS2 retakes setup lists the plugins that stack uses.
How do I stop gameinfo.gi being overwritten?
You cannot stop Valve updating the file, but you can make the fix automatic:
- Re-add the line on every start. Open source community scripts on GitHub check
gameinfo.giwhen the server starts and insert the Metamod line if it is missing. Run one from your start script before launching the server, or add a one line check of your own that greps forcsgo/addons/metamodand inserts it when absent. - Keep a copy. Save your edited
gameinfo.gisomewhere safe, but do not paste an old copy over a new one after an update. Valve may have changed other lines, so add the Metamod line to the new file instead. - Restart after every patch and check
meta listbefore your players notice.
Fixing it on a GamezServers server
On a GamezServers CS2 server, open the Files tab, go to game/csgo/gameinfo.gi, add the line under Game_LowViolence csgo_lv in the browser editor and press Restart. The console in the panel takes meta list and css_plugins list directly. Updates to Metamod and CounterStrikeSharp are uploads in the same Files tab, or over SFTP for a whole folder. The rest of the console commands are in our CS2 server commands list.
FAQ
Why does meta list say Unknown command in CS2?
Metamod is not loading. The usual cause is a CS2 update that replaced gameinfo.gi and removed the Game csgo/addons/metamod line.
Where does the Metamod line go in gameinfo.gi?
Directly under Game_LowViolence csgo_lv in the SearchPaths block, above Game csgo. It must come before the main game path to load.
Do I need to reinstall all my plugins after a CS2 update?
Usually not. Your plugin files stay in game/csgo/addons. Restore the gameinfo.gi line and update CounterStrikeSharp or individual plugins only if they fail to load.
Does a CS2 update delete my plugin configs?
No. Updates replace game files such as gameinfo.gi, not your files in addons or your configs in game/csgo/cfg.
Which Metamod version does CS2 need?
Metamod:Source 2.x. Use a recent dev build, especially after a Source 2 engine update, and check CounterStrikeSharp's docs for the minimum build it supports.
