If your game server bill jumped after the first month or first term, it is almost always because the price you signed up at was a promotional rate, and the renewal is charged at the regular price. Sometimes it is also a term discount that only applied to the first quarter or year, or an add on whose free period ended. The fix is to find the regular price, decide if the server is still the right size, and either downgrade, change billing length or move.
Below is how to spot a renewal jump before you pay, how to work out the real cost of the first year, and what to do once it has happened.
The common reasons a bill goes up
1. First month or first term promotion. The headline price is "50% off" or "first month 1 USD". From month two you pay the full price. This is the most common and the most honest version, as long as the full price is shown at checkout.
2. A discount on the first term only. Buy 3, 6 or 12 months at a discount, and the renewal of that term is at the regular rate. People forget because the second charge is a year away.
3. Free add ons that become paid. Backups, a dedicated IP or extra storage free "for the first month", then billed monthly.
4. A plan change or upgrade you forgot. Upgrading mid month adds a prorated charge that month, then the next renewal is at the new plan's full price.
5. Currency and bank fees. If the host bills in a currency your card is not in, your bank converts it and may add a fee. See why a game server bill is higher than the listed price.
6. A real price change. Hosts can change prices for new and existing customers. A fair host emails you before the next charge.
How to find the real price before paying
- Read the checkout total and the renewal line. A good checkout shows both: "today" and "then X per month".
- Look for the word "first". "First month", "first term", "first invoice" all mean the price changes after.
- Check the regular price on the plan page with no promo code applied.
- Check the term length. "From 2.99 per month" often means 2.99 per month when you pay for 12 or 24 months up front.
- List the add ons you need and check if each is free forever or free for a while.
Work out the real first year cost
Do this for any offer before you compare:
first year cost = first period price + (renewals in the year x regular price) + add ons x 12
Example with a monthly plan at 9.99 with 50% off the first month:
4.99 + (11 x 9.99) = 114.88 for the first year
Example with a "2.99 a month" offer that requires paying 12 months up front, then renews at 8.99:
2.99 x 12 = 35.88 for year one
8.99 x 12 = 107.88 for year two
The second offer is great for year one, but the server costs three times more the year after. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are buying.
What to do if your bill already went up
- Check the invoice. Find the line items: plan, add ons, tax, any upgrade.
- Check your RAM use. If you are paying for more memory than the server uses, a smaller plan may be fine. Our guide on checking real RAM usage shows how, and when to downgrade covers the risks.
- Remove add ons you do not need.
- Consider a longer billing period if you know you will keep the server. Longer terms usually cost less per month. See monthly vs yearly billing.
- Split it with friends. One person paying the full renewal is what makes most groups give up a server. Splitting fixes that.
- Ask support. Some hosts offer a retention discount or a smaller plan when you say the price is the problem.
- Move. Download your world first. Our guide on moving a server to a new host covers each step.
Can you avoid renewal jumps completely?
Mostly, yes:
- Pick hosts where the regular monthly price is shown first and the promo is clearly a one off.
- Avoid long prepaid terms at a discount unless you are sure about the game.
- Set a reminder a few days before any term renews.
- Keep your own backup of the world so you are never locked in.
How our pricing works at renewal
On GamezServers, the plan price is the renewal price. New customers get 50% off their first month, and from month two you pay the plan price shown on the game page, for example 9.99 USD for 4 GB. Checkout shows what you pay today and what renews. Backups, DDoS protection, SFTP and support are included in every plan, so nothing that was free in month one becomes paid in month two. There are no setup fees or contracts, you can cancel from the control panel, and you can change plans at any time with a prorated charge. The details are in our billing docs.

FAQ
Why did my Minecraft server bill double?
Most likely the first month was half price or discounted with a code. The second invoice is the plan's full price. Check the invoice line items to confirm.
Can I keep the promo price?
Usually not, since it is for new customers. Some hosts offer a discount if you say the price is why you are leaving, but do not count on it.
Is it cheaper to start a new account to get the promo again?
Most hosts limit new customer deals to once per person, and it often breaks their terms. Moving your world each time also costs time and risks data. A longer billing period is the cleaner way to pay less.
Do I get a warning before renewal?
That depends on the host. Stripe based billing sends receipts after charges, and many hosts email before yearly renewals. Set your own reminder to be safe.
