What comes set up on a Night of the Dead server

A base that stays standing

Walls, traps and turrets stay put between sessions, so anyone in the crew can log in and keep fortifying.

Peaceful to Legend

Pick a difficulty from Peaceful through Normal, Hard, Survival, Challenge and Legend, or a Custom setup.

PvE or PvP

Keep it co-op against the horde, or switch the server to PvP when your group wants rivalry between bases.

Backups before big nights

Take a one click backup before a risky night or a big rebuild, and roll back if the horde wins.

How to join your Night of the Dead server

  1. 1

Launch Night of the Dead and choose Start Game.

  2. 2

    Select Multiplayer, then Dedicated Server.

  3. 3

Find your server by name in the list.

  4. 4

Join and enter {SERVER_PASSWORD} if you set a password.

Common problems

The server list follows your Steam download region. Friends abroad who can't see the server should switch their download region to match.

The PvP setting is reversed: 1 means PvE and 0 means PvP. Restart after changing it.

To raise the player cap, edit MaxPlayers in LF/Saved/Config/ServerSettings.ini. Panel settings like the name and password are rewritten into that file on every start.

Moving a single player world over? Upload the save and set Savegame Name to its name before the first start.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Night of the Dead server hosting, explained

Night of the Dead splits every day in two. While it is light you explore an island, scavenge and gather materials. When night falls a horde comes for your base, and the walls, traps and turrets you placed during the day are what keep it standing. Jackto Studios took it to version 1.0 in May 2024, with followers, vehicles, dungeons and automation on top of the tower defense core.

In co-op, groups split the work: someone handles building and power, someone gathers, someone runs the production lines, and everyone mans the defenses at night. A dedicated server keeps that shared fortress available, so whoever has an evening free can push the next project without waiting for the host. PvP is there for groups that want rival bases instead. Turn it on in the panel and restart.

The panel sets the server name, password, admin password, difficulty, PvE or PvP, save name and message of the day, plus extra launch arguments. Auto update keeps the server on the same version as the game. Everything else is in ServerSettings.ini, which you can edit in the file manager, and saves can be pulled down with SFTP or a one click backup.

This is an Unreal Engine survival game with big bases and lots of zombies on screen. A few friends on a fresh world run on 6 GB. A full crew with a sprawling fortress and production lines should use 8 GB. Big groups on the high difficulties, with huge hordes every night, are the case for 12 GB. You can change plans any time as the base grows.

Common questions

How do players find a Night of the Dead dedicated server?

Go to Start Game, then Multiplayer, then Dedicated Server, and look for your server name. The list follows your Steam download region.

How many players can join?

The player cap is MaxPlayers in ServerSettings.ini. Most co-op crews run 4 to 8, and you can raise it for a bigger group.

Can I turn PvP on or off?

Yes. The PvP setting in the panel uses 1 for PvE and 0 for PvP. Change it and restart.

Which difficulty should I pick?

Start on Normal for a new group and raise it once your defenses hold. Survival, Challenge and Legend are for crews that know the game.

Can I bring my existing save over?

Yes. Upload the save with SFTP or the file manager and set the Savegame Name setting to match.

How do I use admin commands?

Set the admin password in the panel, then log in with it in game to get admin rights for kicks and server commands.

Does the game use anti-cheat?

Yes, Night of the Dead uses Easy Anti-Cheat, so mods that change the client are not part of normal play.

Is Night of the Dead finished?

Yes. It left Early Access with version 1.0 in May 2024.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Night of the Dead?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Night of the Dead server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
