Stormforge mods are confirmed: the game lists Steam Workshop support and a built in level editor, and Roboto Games describes modding that lets players use community made equipment, enemies, points of interest and game rules. The developers say mods can be added to an existing game without separate downloads. How mods will work on a self-hosted server has not been published yet. Here is what is confirmed ahead of early access on 10 November 2026.

What Roboto Games has said about modding

The Steam store page and the developer's announcements describe deep support for modding combined with procedural world generation. The key points:

  • Community content types. Players can play with community created equipment, enemies, points of interest and game rules.
  • No separate downloads. Mods can be added to existing games without separate downloads, rather than needing a fresh world or manual file copying.
  • Steam Workshop. Workshop support is on the Steam feature list, which is where you would expect to browse and subscribe to mods.
  • Level editor. A level editor ships with the game, so the community can build content with the same kind of tools.

Because the world is procedurally generated, mods that add points of interest or enemies should be able to appear across generated maps, rather than being tied to one hand built area. The exact behaviour will be clearer once early access opens.

How to get mods (once the game launches)

Steam Workshop mods usually work like this:

  1. Open Stormforge's Workshop page from the game's Steam community hub.
  2. Click Subscribe on a mod. Steam downloads it for you.
  3. Launch the game and enable the mod in game, if it asks.

Exact steps inside Stormforge have not been shown yet, so treat this as the general Workshop pattern. The Workshop may have little content on launch day, and early access updates can break mods, so expect some churn in the first weeks.

Mods in multiplayer

The developers' description of adding mods to a game in progress without separate downloads suggests friends will not have to hunt down mod files by hand to join a modded world. That is how several modern co-op games handle it: the host's mods are shared with players as they connect. Until Stormforge launches, we cannot confirm exactly how it works, so check before building a big modded world:

  • Whether every player needs to subscribe to the same mods.
  • Whether mod versions have to match.
  • What happens to a world if a mod is removed.

Mods on a self-hosted server

This is the big open question for hosts. Self-hosted servers are confirmed, reached over LAN or a relay, but nothing has been published about how a server loads mods, where mod files go or whether Workshop content can be installed on a server directly. Our Stormforge dedicated servers guide lists everything else that is still unknown, and we update it as details land.

Mods also tend to raise memory use. If you plan a heavily modded world for a full crew of 8, expect to need more RAM than for vanilla. See how much RAM a game server needs.

Before you mod your world

  • Back up your save before adding or removing a mod, especially in early access.
  • Add mods one at a time, so you know which one caused a problem.
  • Keep the whole crew updated after every patch, both the game and the mods.

Hosting a modded Stormforge world

We are preparing Stormforge servers and will open them once the official server tools are out and we have tested them, including how mods behave. The control panel includes a file manager, SFTP for big uploads and 3 backups, which are useful for trying mods safely. Servers are not open yet, so join the waitlist on the Stormforge server hosting page, and read the Stormforge quick start guide for the planned plans.
