How to Add Admins to a Squad 44 Server (Admins.cfg and Commands)

Add admins on a Squad 44 (Post Scriptum) server: Admins.cfg groups and permissions, SteamID64 lines, reserved slot members and the admin commands.

To add an admin to a Squad 44 server, open PostScriptum/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg, make sure a group exists with the permissions you want, add a line Admin=SteamID64:GroupName, and restart the server. The admin then opens the console in game with the backtick or tilde key and uses commands like AdminKick, AdminBan, AdminChangeMap and AdminBroadcast. The same file gives clan members reserved slots without any admin powers.

Squad 44 is the new name for Post Scriptum, which is why every file and folder still says PostScriptum.

How Admins.cfg works

The file has two kinds of lines. Group lines define a role and its permissions. Admin lines put a player into a role.

Group=Owner:changemap,pause,cheat,private,balance,chat,kick,ban,config,cameraman,immune,manageserver,reserve,demos,teamchange,forceteamchange,canseeadminchat
Group=Admin:changemap,balance,chat,kick,ban,cameraman,immune,reserve,teamchange,forceteamchange,canseeadminchat
Group=Moderator:chat,kick,ban,reserve,canseeadminchat
Group=Member:reserve

Admin=76561198000000001:Owner // Sarge
Admin=76561198000000002:Admin // Doc
Admin=76561198000000003:Moderator // Hawk
Admin=76561198000000004:Member // seeder

Rules:

  • The ID is the 17 digit SteamID64, the long number starting with 7656. Not a name, not a STEAM_0 ID.
  • Group names are case sensitive and must match exactly between the Group and Admin lines.
  • Everything after // is a comment. Use it for names, because six months later nobody remembers who 7656119... was.
  • One player, one line. Give each person the single group that fits.
  • Restart the server after editing. Changes are read at start.

What each permission allows

Permission Allows
changemap AdminChangeMap and AdminSetNextMap
kick Kicking players
ban Banning players
chat Admin chat and broadcasts
canseeadminchat Reading admin chat
balance Team balance tools, even when teams are uneven
teamchange Switching team regardless of balance rules
forceteamchange AdminForceTeamChange on other players
immune Cannot be kicked or banned by other admins
reserve Uses a reserved slot when the server is full
cameraman Admin camera, for spectating and event footage
pause Pausing the match
private Password protecting the server
config Changing server config from the console
manageserver Server management commands, such as shutdown
demos Recording demos
cheat Cheat and debug commands, keep this for testing only

Give the narrowest set that does the job. A moderator who only handles toxic chat and team killers needs chat, kick, ban and canseeadminchat. Very few people need cheat or config on a live server.

Reserved slots without admin powers

A group with only reserve is how clans keep their regulars getting in on a full server. Set NumReservedSlots in Server.cfg to how many slots to hold, then put members in that group. When the server is full, public players cannot take the reserved slots, but members can.

Find someone's SteamID64

  • Ask them to open their Steam profile, right click the page and copy the URL. If it ends in a long number, that is it.
  • If they use a custom URL, any SteamID lookup site converts it.
  • On the server, ListPlayers in the console or over RCON shows connected players with their Steam IDs.

Admin commands

Open the console with the backtick or tilde key. Tab completion helps with command and layer names.

Players

ListPlayers
AdminKick "PlayerName" Teamkilling at main
AdminKickById 12 Teamkilling at main
AdminBan "PlayerName" 0 Repeated teamkilling
AdminBanById 12 0 Cheating
AdminWarn "PlayerName" Stop blocking the road
AdminForceTeamChange "PlayerName"
AdminRemovePlayerFromSquad "PlayerName"
AdminDisbandSquad 1 3
AdminListDisconnectedPlayers

The Id versions take the player number from ListPlayers, which avoids mistakes when names have odd characters. A ban length of 0 is permanent. AdminDisbandSquad takes the team number and the squad number. AdminListDisconnectedPlayers is how you catch someone who team killed and left.

Match and map

ShowNextMap
AdminSetNextMap <layer>
AdminChangeMap <layer>
AdminRestartMatch
AdminEndMatch

AdminChangeMap ends the current match and loads the layer you name right away. AdminSetNextMap changes only what comes next and is kinder to players mid round. Layer names must be exact, copy them from MapRotation.cfg or use tab completion.

Server

AdminBroadcast Event starts in 10 minutes, join Discord for squads
AdminSetMaxNumPlayers 60
AdminSetServerPassword eventnight

AdminSetServerPassword with nothing after it removes the password again. Changes made from the console last for the running session; put permanent ones in Server.cfg.

Using RCON instead of the in game console

With an RCON password set, the same commands work from an RCON client, so an admin who is not in the game can still deal with a problem. Start the server with -RCONPORT and -RCONPASSWORD, then connect your RCON tool to the server IP and that port. Community tools built for Squad style servers also handle Squad 44.

Bans and a fair admin team

Bans land in Bans.cfg in the same folder. Read it once in a while: permanent bans for a single heated moment pile up and keep players away from a game that cannot spare them. Write down a short ruleset in ServerMessages.cfg and Motd.cfg so players know what gets them kicked, and use AdminWarn before AdminKick for anything short of cheating.

On a GamezServers server

On a Squad 44 server with us, Admins.cfg, Bans.cfg and the message files are in the file manager, so adding an admin is an edit and a restart from the control panel. The RCON password is a panel setting, and one click backups mean you can save a copy of your admin list before handing out new roles. The Squad 44 hosting guide covers Server.cfg and the rotation if you are still setting up.

FAQ

How do I make myself admin on Squad 44?

Add Admin=YourSteamID64:GroupName to PostScriptum/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg, with a group that has the permissions you want, and restart the server.

Why do my admin commands not work?

The SteamID64 is wrong, the group name does not match exactly, the group lacks that permission, or the server was not restarted after the edit.

How do I give clan members reserved slots?

Create a group with only the reserve permission, add members to it in Admins.cfg, and set NumReservedSlots in Server.cfg.

How do I change the map on a Squad 44 server?

Use AdminChangeMap followed by the layer name to switch now, or AdminSetNextMap to set the next one. You need the changemap permission.
