To port forward a game server on a Spectrum router, open the My Spectrum app, tap Services, then Router under Equipment, then Advanced Settings, then Port Forwarding & IP Reservations. Pick the PC that runs the server, reserve its IP, tap Add Port Assignment, enter the game's port and protocol, and save. Spectrum's own routers (the Spectrum WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 units and Advanced WiFi models) no longer have a usable web admin page, so the app is the only way in.
What you need first
- The My Spectrum app, signed in with the account holder's username. Sub users often cannot see equipment settings.
- A Spectrum supplied router that shows up under Services. If you use your own router with a Spectrum modem, skip to the section about that below.
- The server PC switched on and connected, so the app can list it.
- The port numbers for your game. These are some of the most searched:
| Game | Port | Protocol |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft: Java Edition | 25565 | TCP |
| Minecraft: Bedrock Edition | 19132 | UDP |
| Project Zomboid | 16261 to 16262 | UDP |
| 7 Days to Die | 26900 TCP, 26900 to 26902 UDP | Both |
The full list for every game we host is in how to port forward a game server.
Step by step in the My Spectrum app
- Open the app and tap Services.
- Under Equipment, tap Router.
- Tap Advanced Settings. If the router is still finishing an update, this can take a few seconds to load.
- Tap Port Forwarding & IP Reservations.
- Choose the server PC from the device list.
- Turn on Reserve IP Address. This pins the PC to its current local IP so the rule cannot end up pointing at a different device after a reboot.
- Tap Add Port Assignment.
- Give it a name such as
ValheimorMC server. - Enter the external port and internal port. For a game server these are the same number. For a range like Project Zomboid's, add the start and end.
- Pick TCP, UDP or TCP+UDP, then tap the checkmark to save.
Repeat step 7 onward for each extra port. Games like 7 Days to Die need a TCP rule and a separate UDP range, or one TCP+UDP rule covering both.
The same screens exist on Spectrum.net in a browser. Sign in, open Services, then Internet, select your router and look for Advanced Settings.
Tell friends the right address
The address friends type is your public IP. Search "what is my IP" on the server PC to see it. Spectrum residential IPs are dynamic but tend to stay the same for long stretches, often months, until the modem is offline for a while. When it does change, everyone gets "connection timed out" until you send the new one. A free DDNS hostname removes that chore; our DDNS guide covers setting one up.
Port forwarding is missing or greyed out
This is the most common Spectrum complaint, and there are a few reasons for it.
The router is not a Spectrum router. If you bought your own router, the app has nothing to manage. Log in to your router's own admin page or app and forward ports there instead. Router specific walkthroughs: ASUS, Netgear Nighthawk, TP-Link Deco, eero.
The router is in a state the app does not support. Some older Spectrum routers are only partly supported by Advanced Settings. Restarting the router from the app and waiting ten minutes sometimes brings the menu back. If not, Spectrum support can confirm whether your model supports it from the app.
You are signed in as a sub user. Sign out and back in as the account owner.
Security Shield. Some Spectrum plans include Security Shield, which filters traffic at the router. It is aimed at malicious sites rather than inbound game traffic, but if everything else checks out, look at its activity screen for blocks on your server PC.
Using your own router with a Spectrum modem
Spectrum often installs a standalone modem plus a separate router. If you replaced their router with your own, there is only one router doing NAT and you forward ports on it. That is the clean setup.
If you have a Spectrum router and your own router plugged into it, you have double NAT: the outer router sees your router as the destination and your router does not know about the PC. Either put the Spectrum router out of the chain (plug your router straight into the modem) or forward on both devices. Our double NAT guide explains how to spot it.
Testing the rule
- Start the game server and wait until the console says it is listening.
- On a phone with Wi-Fi turned off, use a port checker for TCP ports, or better, ask a friend to join.
- Do not test with your own public IP from inside the house. Many routers will not loop that back, and it looks like failure even when the rule works.
UDP ports cannot be tested by most online checkers, because UDP gets no reply unless the game answers. Our guide on testing UDP ports has methods that do work.
When it still fails
- Firewall on the server PC. Windows asks once whether to allow the server. If you missed it, add a rule; see Windows Firewall rules for a game server.
- Reserved the wrong device. Laptops and PCs with both Wi-Fi and Ethernet show up twice. Reserve the one actually in use.
- Server bound to the wrong address. If the server config sets a specific IP to listen on, it must match the reserved local IP, or be left blank.
- Old rule in the way. Two rules for the same external port cannot both work. Delete the stale one.

Or skip Spectrum's router completely
A hosted server does not live behind your Spectrum router at all. It has its own address, the ports are open from the start and no app menu can go missing. With GamezServers you pick the game, the server is live about a minute after checkout, and the settings, backups and console are in a web panel. FAQ
Does Spectrum allow port forwarding?
Yes. Spectrum routers support it through the My Spectrum app under Advanced Settings, and you can use your own router instead if you want full control.
Why is there no web login for my Spectrum router?
Recent Spectrum routers are managed only through the app and Spectrum.net. Typing 192.168.1.1 shows a limited page or nothing at all.
Does Spectrum use CGNAT?
Spectrum cable internet normally gives each home a public IPv4 address, so port forwarding works. If your router's WAN IP starts with 100.64 to 100.127, check our CGNAT guide.
Do I need TCP or UDP?
It depends on the game. Minecraft Java uses TCP, most survival games use UDP. Picking TCP+UDP covers both if you are unsure.
