A Project Zomboid Build 42 server needs about 6 GB of RAM for up to 6 players on vanilla, 8 GB for up to 12 players with a few mods, and 12 GB for big mod lists, map mods or 12 to 32 players. Because the server runs on Java, what counts is the -Xmx heap you give it, not just the RAM in the machine. Add a CPU with fast single core speed and around 10 GB of SSD space plus mods.
How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?
Build 42 uses noticeably more memory and CPU than Build 41 for the same group. Rough sizing for a dedicated server:
| Group | Build 41 | Build 42 |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 6 players, vanilla | 4 GB | 6 GB |
| Up to 12 players, some mods | 6 GB | 8 GB |
| 12 to 32 players, big mod list or map mods | 8 GB | 12 GB |
| 32+ players, public server | 12 GB+ | 16 GB and a fast CPU |
Build 42 became the stable branch on 29 July 2026, and Build 41 lives on in the legacy41 branch. The two cannot share a world, so pick the build first and size from that column. Our Build 41 vs Build 42 multiplayer comparison explains the differences.
What uses the most RAM on a Zomboid server?
- Spread out players. Every player keeps the cells around them loaded and simulated. Six players in one base cost far less than six players in six towns.
- Zombie population. More zombies loaded around players means more memory and CPU. Keep population near Normal on busy servers.
- Workshop mods. Each mod adds memory, and map mods add the most because they add cells to load.
- Vehicles. Fast driving loads new map chunks quickly, which spikes both memory and disk activity.
- World age. As players build, store items and stack loot, the saved world grows.
How do I set the Java memory for a Project Zomboid server?
The server is a Java program, and Java only uses as much memory as the heap allows. A machine with 16 GB of RAM still runs a stuttering server if the heap is left small. The limit is set with -Xmx in the server's start configuration:
- Windows:
StartServer64.batin the server folder passes-Xmxto Java. - Linux: the
vmArgslist inProjectZomboid64.jsonin the server folder.
"vmArgs": [
"-Xms8g",
"-Xmx8g"
]
Two rules:
- Give the heap most of the server's memory, about 75 to 80% of what the machine has free for it, so Java does not constantly clean up memory.
- Never set it higher than the machine has. Leave a few GB for the operating system, or the system kills the server when memory runs out.
If the server hitches every few seconds as more players join, a too small heap is the usual cause. More fixes are in our Project Zomboid lag and rubberbanding fix.

What CPU does a Project Zomboid server need?
Zombie simulation and world loading lean on single core speed, so a modern CPU with high clock speed matters more than core count. Four fast cores is a sensible minimum for a dedicated machine: one carries most of the game, and the rest handle networking, saving and Java's garbage collection.
Signs you are CPU bound rather than short on RAM: zombies freeze or teleport when many players are in different towns, lag gets worse on hordes and fast driving, and memory still has headroom.
How much disk space does a Project Zomboid server need?
Around 10 GB for the server files, plus room for Workshop mods and a world that grows over months. Use an SSD. Driving across the map forces the server to read and write chunks fast, and a slow disk turns that into rubber banding for everyone. Leave space for backups too, especially before mod updates and game patches.
How many players can a Project Zomboid server hold?
The game supports up to 254 players on Build 42 since hotfix 42.20.3, and the default MaxPlayers in the server ini is 32. In practice the hardware limit arrives well before the game's limit. Most co-op groups are 2 to 8 players, which a 6 to 8 GB server handles well. See Project Zomboid how many players for more.
What ports and bandwidth does a Zomboid server need?
The default ports are UDP 16261 and 16262. For a home server, forward both on your router. Upload bandwidth matters more than download: every player needs a steady stream of zombie and world updates, and a home connection that handles four friends can struggle with sixteen.
Can I host Project Zomboid from my gaming PC?
Yes. Hosting from the main menu runs the server alongside your game, and the host screen lets you choose how much memory the hosted server gets. The catch is that your PC now runs the game and the server at once, so you need enough RAM for both, and the world is only up while you play. For a world friends can join any time, a dedicated server is the better fit. Our guide to making a Project Zomboid server covers both.
Project Zomboid plans on GamezServers
Our Project Zomboid hosting plans follow the Build 42 column above, and the Java heap is sized to your plan on every start, so you never touch -Xmx:
| Plan | RAM | Player slots | Price a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 6 GB | 8 | 14.99 USD |
| Standard | 8 GB | 16 | 19.99 USD |
| Pro | 12 GB | 32 | 29.99 USD |
You can run Build 42 or Build 41 (legacy), add Workshop mods from the panel, and upgrade or downgrade anytime without losing your world. New customers get 50% off the first month on monthly plans.
FAQ
How much RAM do I need for a Project Zomboid server?
About 6 GB for a small vanilla Build 42 group, 8 GB for up to 12 players with some mods, and 12 GB for big mod lists or 12 to 32 players.
Does Build 42 need more RAM than Build 41?
Yes. Plan for roughly 2 GB more than the same group needed on Build 41, plus a fast CPU.
Where do I set Xmx for a Project Zomboid server?
In StartServer64.bat on Windows, or the vmArgs in ProjectZomboid64.json on Linux. Set it to most of the server's free memory, never more than the machine has.
What CPU is best for a Project Zomboid server?
A modern CPU with high single core speed. Four fast cores beat many slow ones.
Do mods increase Project Zomboid server requirements?
Yes. Every Workshop mod adds memory, and map mods add the most. Big mod lists run best on 8 to 12 GB.
