A Project Zomboid server supports up to 254 players in Build 42, after hotfix 42.20.3 on 17 August 2026 improved player limit handling. The default MaxPlayers in servertest.ini is 32. In practice, most co-op groups are 2 to 8 players, and RAM and CPU, not the game's cap, decide how many your server handles well.
How many players can play Project Zomboid together?
It depends on how you play:
| Mode | Players |
|---|---|
| Singleplayer | 1 |
| Split screen on one PC | Up to 4, with controllers |
| Host from the main menu | Your MaxPlayers value, limited by your PC |
| Dedicated server, Build 42 | Up to 254 with MaxPlayers |
Dedicated server, Build 41 (legacy41) |
Your MaxPlayers value |
The 254 figure is what The Indie Stone added in 42.20.3, along with letting administrators join when the server is full. That makes big community servers possible, but it does not mean a small machine can run them.
What is the default max players on a Project Zomboid server?
The default is 32. It is set by MaxPlayers in your server's ini file, which is named after the server:
Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini
MaxPlayers=32
Change the number, save, and restart the server. If you host from the main menu, the same option is on the server settings screen before you start. Our best Project Zomboid server settings covers the other ini keys worth changing at the same time.
How many players can my Project Zomboid server handle?
More players means more of Knox County loaded at once. Every player keeps the area around them simulated, so eight players in eight towns cost far more than eight players in one base. Build 42 also uses noticeably more RAM and CPU than Build 41.
Rough sizing for a Build 42 dedicated server:
| Group | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 6 players, vanilla | 6 GB | Small friend group |
| Up to 12 players, a few mods | 8 GB | The usual sweet spot |
| 12 to 32 players, big mod list or map mods | 12 GB | Long running community worlds |
| 32+ players | 16 GB and a fast CPU | Public servers, plan carefully |
The server runs on Java, and Java only uses the memory you give it with the -Xmx heap setting. A big player count with a small heap stutters badly. Our Project Zomboid lag and rubberbanding fix explains the heap, zombie population and other settings that matter when you add players.
What limits player count besides RAM?
- Zombie population. High population multiplies the work per player. Keep it near Normal on busy servers.
- Spread. Players scattered across the map load many more chunks than a group in one base.
- Vehicles. Fast driving forces chunks to load quickly. 42.21 improved driving at high ping, but it is still one of the heaviest things players do.
- Mods. Every Workshop mod adds memory and often CPU work.
- Upload bandwidth on home hosted servers. Each player needs a steady connection.
Can I have more players than MaxPlayers?
Admins can. Since 42.20.3, administrators can join a full server, so you can always get in to kick an idle player or fix something. Regular players see the server as full until a slot opens.
How do you limit who joins, not just how many?
A lower MaxPlayers keeps a server small, but a password or whitelist decides who those players are:
Password=in the ini sets a join password.Open=falseturns on whitelist mode, where only accounts you create can join.
Our guide on making a Project Zomboid server private covers both, including the adduser command.
How many players fit on each GamezServers plan?
Our Project Zomboid plans set MaxPlayers to your plan's slot count for you:
| Plan | RAM | Player slots | Price a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 6 GB | 8 | 14.99 USD |
| Standard | 8 GB | 16 | 19.99 USD |
| Pro | 12 GB | 32 | 29.99 USD |
New customers get 50% off the first month, and up to 10 friends can split the bill for a 1 USD fee per share. You can upgrade later without losing your world if the group grows. The Java heap is sized to your plan on every start. See Project Zomboid server hosting.
FAQ
What is the max player limit in Project Zomboid Build 42?
254 players. The Indie Stone added support for up to 254 in hotfix 42.20.3 on 17 August 2026.
How many people can play Project Zomboid co-op?
Up to 4 in split screen on one PC, and as many as your server's MaxPlayers online. Most groups play with 2 to 8.
How do I change max players in Project Zomboid?
Edit MaxPlayers in your server's ini file in Zomboid/Server, save it and restart the server.
Does more players mean more zombies?
Not directly, since population follows your sandbox settings. But more players spread out load more of the map, so the server simulates more zombies at once.
How much RAM do I need for 16 players?
Around 8 GB for a lightly modded Build 42 server, and 12 GB if you run a big mod list or extra maps.
Skip the setup. Your own Zomboid server.
