To host a Myth of Empires server, download the free dedicated server (SteamCMD app 1794810), run PrivateServerTool.exe to set the name, password, Server ID, ports and GM Steam IDs, then start it with the generated StartPrivateServer.bat. Players find it under Custom Server by name. For a multi map world, use MatrixServerTool.exe instead, which builds a cluster with a lobby server and scene servers. Plan on at least 8 GB of RAM.
What do you need to run a Myth of Empires server?
Myth of Empires is one of the heavier survival games to host. The world is big, and buildings, NPC soldiers and tamed animals pile up over weeks of play. The server is a Windows build (MOEServer.exe), so a Windows machine is the simple path. Linux hosts run it through Wine, which works but is more fiddly.
| Group | RAM | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small PvE group, a few bases | 8 GB | Fresh world, a handful of players |
| Default 25 players with real bases and armies | 12 GB | Where most guild servers settle |
| 50 or more players, PvP sieges | 16 GB | Troops and siege weapons add up fast |
You also need a CPU with good single thread speed, an SSD (the world loads a lot of data on boot) and a stable upload connection. Players each need their own copy of the game on Steam. For general sizing advice, see how much RAM a game server needs.

How do I install the Myth of Empires dedicated server?
- Install SteamCMD and download the server files anonymously:
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:\MOEServer +login anonymous +app_update 1794810 validate +quit
- Copy the PrivateServerTool folder from your game install. In Steam, right click Myth of Empires, choose Manage > Browse local files, and you will find
PrivateServerToolandMatrixServerToolthere. Put the folder next to the server files. - Run the server once so it creates its folders, then close it.
- Open the ports you choose in your firewall and router (next section).
The developer's own walkthrough of both tools is on the Myth of Empires website, and it is worth reading once because the tools change with game updates.
How do I set up a single server with PrivateServerTool?
PrivateServerTool is a Windows program with tabs for each group of settings. The important ones live on the basic settings tab:
| Setting | What it does | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Server Name | Name shown in the custom server list | Make it unique, players search by it |
| Server Password | Optional join password | Leave blank for a public server |
| Server ID | Identifies the save | Never change it later, saves are stored by ID |
| Game Port, Query Port, Remote Management Port | Network ports | Each must be different, 1024 to 65535 |
| GM Accounts | SteamID64s with admin powers | Separate several with semicolons |
| P2P Mode | Lets players in without a public IP | The developer calls it unstable on complex networks |
The other tabs hold gameplay rules such as PvP and rate multipliers, and the tool also lets you pick mods. Set them, click Save Config, then start the server from the tool. It writes a StartPrivateServer.bat file with all your choices as launch parameters, which you can run directly from then on.
A warning worth repeating: saves are tied to the Server ID. If you change it, the server boots a fresh world and your old one looks gone (it is still on disk under the old ID, but players will not see it).
What ports does a Myth of Empires server use?
Many guides use game port 11888 and query port 12888, opened for both TCP and UDP. The developer only asks that every port is unique and between 1024 and 65535, plus a third port for remote management. If you run more than one server on the same machine, give each its own set.
Game port: 11888 (TCP and UDP)
Query port: 12888 (TCP and UDP)
Remote management port: your choice, unique
If you host at home, forward these to your PC. Our guide to port forwarding a game server covers routers and Windows Firewall rules.
How do players join a Myth of Empires private server?
There is no direct IP connect in the client. Players:
- Open Myth of Empires and click Custom Server.
- Switch to the single server tab.
- Search for your exact server name and join, entering the password if you set one.
A big world can take several minutes to boot. If friends cannot see the server, wait until the console finishes loading, then refresh the list.
How do I make myself admin (GM)?
Add your SteamID64 (the 17 digit number, not your profile name) to GM Accounts in PrivateServerTool. The tool can read the Steam account you are logged into, and you separate extra admins with semicolons. Restart the server after changing the list. You can find a SteamID64 by pasting a Steam profile link into any SteamID lookup site.
How do Myth of Empires clusters work?
A cluster is a world made of several linked servers, like the official servers' counties. You build it with MatrixServerTool.exe, not PrivateServerTool. A cluster has these parts:
- Scene servers: each one runs a county (a map region) and needs its own unique ID.
- Lobby server: one per cluster. It handles player connections, character creation and picking a county.
- Battle servers: optional servers for PvP content such as county, prefecture, fortress and jousting battles.
- Public and peripheral servers: support services. The peripheral server needs Redis installed.
For the database, the developer recommends the built in SQLite option for most groups and only suggests MySQL for large, professional setups. Every server in the cluster needs its own ports, and the machine needs enough RAM for all of them at once, so a cluster usually means 16 GB or more. For a friend group or a single guild, one well tuned PrivateServerTool server is much easier to run and is what most private servers use.
Can I use mods on a Myth of Empires server?
Yes, when you self host. Both tools detect installed Workshop mods and let you enter Steam Workshop IDs, and players download the matching mods. Keep the list short at first and add mods one at a time, since a broken mod after a game update is the most common reason a server stops booting. Back up the save folder before every game update.
FAQ
Is the Myth of Empires dedicated server free?
Yes. The server files are a free download through SteamCMD with app ID 1794810. You only pay for the machine it runs on.
How many players can a Myth of Empires server hold?
You set the limit yourself. A default server runs 25 players, and big community servers go much higher, but every extra player means more troops, animals and buildings in memory.
Why can my friends not find my server?
Most often the ports are closed or the world is still loading. Check the console has finished booting, confirm your game and query ports are open, and have friends search the exact server name.
What happens if I change the Server ID?
The server starts a new world, because saves are stored by Server ID. Change it back to load the old save.
Should I use PrivateServerTool or MatrixServerTool?
Use PrivateServerTool for one server with one map, which suits almost every private group. Use MatrixServerTool only if you want a multi county cluster and have the hardware for several servers.
