A 100 player game server usually needs 12 to 16 GB of RAM or more and a fast CPU, which works out to roughly 30 to 40 USD a month at about 2.50 USD per GB, before mods and plugins. Rust on 12 GB and a Paper Minecraft server on 12 GB are typical starting points. Some popular games cannot reach 100 at all: Palworld stops at 32, Counter-Strike 2 at 64, and FiveM needs a paid Cfx.re membership above 48 slots. The bigger costs at this size are often the CPU, staff time and the plugins, not the RAM.
Here is the breakdown by game, and what "100 players" really means when you size a server.
100 players online or 100 members?
The first question is which 100 you mean.
- 100 members in your Discord usually means 10 to 30 online at peak. That is a much smaller server.
- 100 concurrent players is a busy public server, and it is the hardest load a game server handles.
Check your real peak before buying. Most community servers that say "100 players" peak well below that, and you can upgrade when you actually get there. On hosts with prorated plan changes, starting smaller costs nothing extra later.
Cost by game for 100 concurrent players
Prices below are at GamezServers plan rates. RAM figures are starting points for a moderately modded server.
| Game | Can it reach 100? | Starting RAM | Monthly at about 2.50 USD/GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rust | Yes | 12 GB, 16 GB with many plugins or a big map | 29.99 to 39.99 USD |
| Minecraft: Java (Paper or Purpur) | Yes | 12 GB | 29.99 USD |
| Minecraft: Bedrock | Possible on one server, demanding | 6 GB and up | 14.99 USD and up |
| DayZ | Possible, very demanding | 16 GB and more | 39.99 USD and up |
| ARK: Survival Ascended | Possible, very heavy | 24 GB | 59.99 USD |
| FiveM | Only above 48 slots with a Cfx.re membership | 16 GB | 39.99 USD plus the membership |
| Palworld | No, 32 max | n/a | n/a |
| Counter-Strike 2 | No, 64 max | n/a | n/a |
| Valheim | No, 10 per world | n/a | n/a |
| Enshrouded | No, 16 max | n/a | n/a |

Why CPU matters more at 100 players
Almost every game server runs its world simulation on one main thread. At 100 players, that thread is busy with every player's movement, every entity near them and every packet. RAM keeps the world loaded, but the CPU decides whether the server keeps up.
- Minecraft: TPS drops below 20 when the main thread falls behind. Paper or Purpur, pre generated worlds and lower
simulation-distancehelp. - Rust: server FPS falls and players rubber band. Plugin count and entity count are usually the cause.
- DayZ: loot respawn and AI across a big map scale with players.

Minecraft: one server or a network?
At around 100 players, many Minecraft communities split into a network: a lobby, a survival server and a minigame server behind a Velocity proxy. Each server gets its own RAM, and players spread across them. It costs more in total RAM, since each server and the proxy need their own memory, but each server stays smooth.
FiveM above 48 players
FiveM servers can run up to 48 slots for free. Above that, the server owner needs a paid Cfx.re membership tier that raises the slot limit, on top of hosting. Check Cfx.re's own pages for the current tiers. Most roleplay servers also need a database and staff, covered in FiveM server hosting cost.
Costs beyond the server
A 100 player community has costs that a friends server never sees:
- Paid plugins and scripts. Premium Rust plugins, Minecraft plugins and FiveM scripts are often one off purchases.
- Discord bots for linking, moderation and tickets, some with paid tiers.
- A domain for an easy address and a website.
- Staff time. Moderation, support tickets, wipes and events. This is the real cost of a big server.
- Anti cheat and protection. Busy public servers attract cheaters and DDoS attacks.
Cost per player
At 100 concurrent players, hosting is cheap per head:
39.99 USD / 100 players = about 0.40 USD per player per month
That is why big communities often cover costs with a small donation drive or cosmetic supporter ranks. See funding a community game server with donations.
Grow into it
- Start at the plan your current peak needs.
- Watch CPU and memory on your busiest nights. Our guide on checking real RAM usage shows how.
- Upgrade when the peak gets close to the limit, not before.
- Split into multiple servers when one main thread cannot keep up.
Big servers on GamezServers
GamezServers plans go up to 16 GB on most big games and 24 GB on ARK: Survival Ascended and Palworld, and Build your own on a game page lets you pick a custom size up to 32 GB. You set the player limit yourself in the control panel, every plan includes always on DDoS protection and one click backups, and you can upgrade at any time while paying only the prorated difference. See Rust plans or Minecraft plans.

FAQ
How much RAM do I need for 100 players?
For Rust and Paper Minecraft, 12 GB is a common start, more with many plugins or mods. CPU speed matters as much as RAM at this size.
Can a Minecraft server handle 100 players?
Yes, on Paper or Purpur with a fast CPU and sensible view and simulation distances. Many large communities still split into several servers behind a proxy.
Why can't my FiveM server go above 48 players?
48 is the free slot limit. Higher limits need a paid Cfx.re membership tier.
Is a 100 slot server the same as 100 players?
No. Slots are a setting. Whether 100 people can play smoothly depends on RAM, CPU and the game itself.
