7 Days to Die V3.3 experimental is out: The Fun Pimps posted the b18 experimental update on 24 September 2026 in a Steam announcement. Its headline feature is a Bigger Backpack system with a new 8x6 inventory grid. It is opt in only through the latest_experimental branch, so stable servers stay on V3.2.0 until it releases.

What is in the 7 Days to Die V3.3 update?

V3.3 is mostly about inventory, plus a batch of multiplayer fixes. The main changes from the official b18 notes:

  • New inventory grid. The default grid becomes 8x6: 4 rows of free slots and 2 rows of encumbered slots, 48 slots in total. That is 3 more than the legacy 9x5 grid.
  • Backpacks. Backpacks come in Small, Medium and Large, each with 6 quality levels. Equipping one in the new Backpack slot adds encumbrance slots, up to 96 slots in an 8x12 grid.
  • Encumbrance still matters. The Pack Mule perk and Armor Pocket mods are how you remove the encumbrance on those extra rows.
  • Ways to get one. The Fun Pimps say you can craft, loot or buy your way to a bigger backpack.

For server owners the fixes list is just as interesting as the backpacks.

V3.3 b18 fix Why it matters on a server
Vehicles check their inventory before pickup on dedicated servers Earlier V3.3 builds could delete everything in a vehicle you picked up
Clothing changes no longer disconnect other players Equipment changes with 3 or more players online could drop people
Fixed a rare thread deadlock during chunk saving Could freeze the save system when a block was placed during a chunk reset
Fixed an exception edge case in RegionFileManager Region files are where your world is stored
Fewer players stuck on the loading screen, with respawn timeouts Fewer soft locks after death
give and listitems work again Admin console commands were missing
Drop on death set to Equipment no longer duplicates gear Stops an easy item dupe
Storage crates upgrade correctly while someone is using them Fixes a multiplayer sync bug

The release also optimizes prefab cell data to use native memory and keeps ItemActionRanged.TryExecuteAction virtual for mod compatibility.

Is V3.3 stable yet?

No. As of 3 October 2026, V3.3 is only on the latest_experimental branch and the default public version is still V3.2.0, which went stable on 26 August 2026. The Fun Pimps have not announced a stable date for V3.3. V3.0, V3.1 and V3.2 each spent roughly one to two weeks on experimental before going stable, but that is a pattern, not a promise.

How do you play V3.3 experimental?

Every player and the server must be on the same branch. To switch your game:

  1. Right click 7 Days to Die in your Steam library and click Properties.
  2. Open Game Versions & Betas.
  3. Pick latest_experimental from the drop down.
  4. Wait for the download, then launch.

To go back, set the branch to the default public version. If a player on stable tries to join a V3.3 server, they get a version mismatch. Our 7 Days to Die version mismatch fix covers that error in detail.

How do you run a V3.3 experimental dedicated server?

Install or update the dedicated server (Steam app 294420) with the experimental branch:

steamcmd +force_install_dir "C:\7dtd-server" +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta latest_experimental validate +quit

On Linux use ./steamcmd.sh and your own install path. To go back to stable later, run the same command without -beta latest_experimental.

Before you switch, decide whether you are testing or playing. Experimental builds can change between updates, and a world started on experimental may not behave well if you roll back to V3.2. The safest pattern is a separate save for testing.

What this means for your server

  • Back up before switching branches. Copy the whole save folder for your world. If you host with us, press Backup in the panel first.
  • Use a new save name for testing. Changing the save name (GameName) starts a fresh save on the same map and keeps the old one on disk. On GamezServers this is the Save name setting.
  • Expect inventory surprises on old saves. The grid changes from 9x5 to 8x6. The patch notes do not say how existing inventories are converted, so check your own items after the first login rather than trusting a 200 day character to it.
  • Mods may break. Anything that edits the backpack UI, the inventory window or ItemActionRanged should be treated as broken until its author says it supports V3.3. Overhauls usually lag further behind.
  • Crossplay waits for stable. Experimental branches are Steam only, so PS5 and Xbox players cannot join a V3.3 server until it reaches stable on consoles.
  • Check your sandbox code after updating. V3.1 already changed the sandbox code format once. Run getsandboxoptions in the console after any major update to confirm your rules loaded.

How to switch a GamezServers server to V3.3

  1. Press Backup on the dashboard.
  2. In Settings, set Game version to latest_experimental.
  3. Optionally set a new Save name so you test on a fresh save.
  4. Press Update game so the server downloads the experimental files, then start it.

Your worlds and saves stay on disk when you change branch. To go back, clear Game version, press Update game again and set the save name back. Plans start at 8 GB for vanilla groups up to 8 players, with 12 and 16 GB for bigger or modded worlds, on our 7 Days to Die server hosting page.
