7 Days to Die Version Mismatch Fix (Incompatible Version, 2026)

Getting a 7 Days to Die version mismatch or incompatible version error? Match the Steam branch, update the server, fix EAC and mod mismatches.

A 7 Days to Die version mismatch or "incompatible version" error means your game and the server are running different builds. The fix is to put both on the same version and the same Steam branch: update the server with SteamCMD, or switch your game to the server's version under Steam, Properties, Betas. The same kind of error also shows up when Easy Anti-Cheat or mods do not match, and this guide covers all three.

Short answer

  • Server is older than you: update the server (SteamCMD app_update 294420 validate, then restart).
  • Server is newer than you: update your game in Steam, and make sure you are not stuck on an old beta branch.
  • Server is on an older version on purpose: in Steam, right click 7 Days to Die, open Properties, then Betas, and pick the branch the server runs.
  • Error mentions EAC or anti cheat: launch the game with EAC on if the server has it on, and off if the server has it off.
  • Error after joining a modded server: install the same overhaul mod version the server runs.

Why it happens

Every client must run the exact same build as the server. There is no partial compatibility, and "we are both updated" is not enough, because Steam branches have different builds even when both say they are up to date.

It is most common right after a big release. When V3.0 "Dead Hot Summer" landed on 29 June 2026, and again with the V3.1 and V3.2 patches, groups ended up split: some players updated automatically, the server did not, or someone was still on the experimental branch from testing. The message you see is usually "incompatible version", "version mismatch" or an unexpected data error on join.

Step 1: Find out which version each side runs

  • Your game: the version number shows on the main menu, usually in a corner.
  • The server: the first lines of the server log show the version, and it also appears next to the server in the browser.

Compare the full version, including the build number, not just "V3".

Step 2: Update the server

On a self hosted server, stop it and run the same SteamCMD command you installed with:

steamcmd +force_install_dir "C:\7dtd-server" +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit

On Linux use ./steamcmd.sh and your own install path. To run the experimental branch instead, add -beta latest_experimental after app_update 294420. Remove it again to go back to stable.

Before updating across a major version, take a backup of your saves. Big updates can make old worlds behave oddly, and in V3 many gameplay settings moved out of serverconfig.xml into the new SandboxCode, so check your settings after the update. See how to change 7 Days to Die server settings.

Step 3: Match your game to the server

If the server deliberately stays on an older version, for example to finish a world or because an overhaul mod has not updated yet:

  1. In your Steam library, right click 7 Days to Die and click Properties.
  2. Open Betas.
  3. Pick the branch that matches the server version. Older versions are listed there.
  4. Let Steam download it, then launch and connect.

To go back to the current version, set Betas to None. Every player in the group needs to do the same, so share the exact branch name.

Step 4: Check Easy Anti-Cheat

The game and the server must agree on EAC:

  • Server EACEnabled is true: launch the game with EAC on.
  • Server EACEnabled is false: launch the game with EAC off, which the game launcher lets you choose.

EAC off is normal on servers running overhauls with custom code, such as Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy and Rebirth. If a friend gets kicked right after loading, this is the most likely cause.

Step 5: Match the mods

XML only modlets on the server are sent to players automatically, so they rarely cause trouble. Mods with custom code or new assets must be installed by every player in the same version as the server. If the server updates an overhaul and you do not, you get errors or a crash while joining. Ask the server owner which version they run and install exactly that one.

Still getting the error?

  • Verify your game files: Steam, right click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.
  • Remove old mods from your own game folder if you are joining a vanilla server.
  • Restart the server after updating. It keeps running the old build until it restarts.
  • Check the server started with the right branch. A SteamCMD command without -beta always installs stable.

Avoid it next time

Agree as a group which version you play on and when you update. After a big patch, update the server first, then tell everyone to update. If you run overhaul mods, wait until the mod supports the new version before updating anything.

A hosted server takes the SteamCMD part off your hands. With a 7 Days to Die server from GamezServers you manage the server from a browser panel with a full console, and you can back up with one click before any update. New to it? Start with how to host a 7 Days to Die server.
