How to join your Zandronum (Doom) server
- 1
Install Zandronum and the Doomseeker server browser.
- 2
Put the same IWAD as the server in your Zandronum folder. For Freedoom servers, get it free from freedoom.github.io.
- 3
In Doomseeker, find your server and double click it. Doomseeker downloads missing PWADs for you.
- 4
Or open the Zandronum console and type
connect.203.0.113.24 - 5
Enter the password from your panel if the server asks.
Common problems
Players need the same IWAD and PWADs as the server. Doomseeker's Wadseeker fetches most community PWADs on join, but commercial IWADs like doom2.wad never download.
Upload IWADs into the IWAD folder and PWADs into the PWAD folder, then type the exact file name, including case, in the panel.
The server, Doomseeker and every player should run the same Zandronum version. After a new Zandronum release, everyone updates together.
Game mode, like cooperative or deathmatch, lives in zandronum.ini. Edit it in the file manager and restart when you switch modes.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Modding your Zandronum (Doom) server
Zandronum loads almost any Doom PWAD or PK3, from classic megawads to full gameplay overhauls. The official site showcases many multiplayer mods, and most files can be fetched by players through Doomseeker.
Zandronum (Doom) server hosting, explained
Zandronum is a multiplayer source port for Doom and Doom II, descended from Skulltag. It plays the original games and almost any WAD made since 1993, with netcode built for the internet. Version 3.2 came out in April 2025 after more than three years of work, with 3.2.1 as a bug fix release later that year, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
The community is still active. Groups run co-op servers that work through megawads like Scythe 2 or Eviternity map by map, deathmatch and capture the flag crowds keep duel and team servers going, and whole communities form around mods like Zombie Horde, Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch and Death and Decay. A server of your own means your WADs, your rules and no waiting for a public server to rotate.
In the panel you choose the IWAD, the PWADs, max players, skill level, start map and every dmflags, zadmflags and compatflags value, plus GeoIP for player flags. Freedoom is installed by default. Upload commercial IWADs like doom2.wad only if you own them. Game mode, passwords and other server variables live in zandronum.ini, and adminlist.txt, banlist.txt and whitelist.txt sit next to it in the file manager.
Zandronum barely touches memory. Co-op or deathmatch with a few PWADs runs on 1 GB, a full server with a big megawad or gameplay mod on 2 GB, and only very heavy mods with huge maps and thousands of monsters need 4 GB. CPU and network matter more than RAM once a co-op map fills with monsters, since the server tracks every one of them for every player. Most groups never outgrow the middle plan, and you can change plans any time if a mod proves heavier than expected.

Common questions
Which IWAD do I need for a Zandronum server?
Freedoom is installed for you and works with no purchase. To run Doom or Doom II, upload your own doom.wad or doom2.wad to the IWAD folder and set it in the panel.
How do players get the PWADs my server uses?
Doomseeker downloads most community PWADs automatically when a player joins. Files it cannot find have to be shared by you and placed in the player's Zandronum folder.
How many players can play on a Zandronum server?
Our default is 16 and the panel allows up to 128. Classic co-op maps get crowded fast, so many co-op groups keep it to 8 or fewer.
How do I set up co-op instead of deathmatch?
Set the game mode in zandronum.ini, then pick the skill and start map in the panel. dmflags control things like item respawn and friendly fire.
Can I run gameplay mods?
Yes. Upload the mod's PK3 or WAD files to the PWAD folder and list them in the PWADS setting, separated by spaces. Load order matters, so follow the mod's instructions.
Is Zandronum still updated?
Yes. Version 3.2 was released in April 2025 and 3.2.1 followed in August 2025. The server installs the latest version listed on the Zandronum site.
How do I make myself admin?
Set sv_rconpassword in zandronum.ini, then type send_password with that password in the game console and use rcon followed by a command. You can also run any server command from the panel console.
Can I play Heretic or Hexen on Zandronum?
Yes, Zandronum also runs Heretic and Hexen. Upload your heretic.wad or hexen.wad to the IWAD folder and set it in the panel.
Is GamezServers affiliated with Zandronum (Doom)?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated Zandronum (Doom) server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
