Common problems
Wesnoth only connects to a server from the same release series. If players see a version error, set Branch to match their game, for example 1.18.
Use the full address with the port from your panel in Connect to Server. Without the port the game tries 15000 and misses.
Add-ons are not stored on your server. Players install the era or map add-on a game needs from the in game Add-ons menu.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Modding your The Battle for Wesnoth server
Wesnoth multiplayer leans on add-ons: new eras, factions and map packs from the official add-on server. Players install them from the in game Add-ons menu, and any game in your lobby can use them.
The Battle for Wesnoth server hosting, explained
The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, open source turn based strategy game on hex maps, with factions like the Loyalists, Undead, Drakes and Knalgans. Multiplayer works through a lobby: players connect to a server, chat, and host or join games inside it. The official server is busy and always there, and that is exactly why some groups want their own corner.
Clans, leagues and friend groups run their own lobby for ladder matches, team games, tournaments and survival scenarios against the AI. It keeps their games and chat in one place, under their own welcome message and moderation. It also lets them stay on the release their group plays, since Wesnoth clients only talk to a server from the same release series.
The panel has three settings. Branch picks the release the server is built from, 1.18 out of the box. Admin Password lets you log in from the lobby with /query admin and the password, then kick, ban or change the message of the day. Message of the Day is what everyone sees on joining. The full server config is in the file manager if you want more.
The Wesnoth server is a small program that relays moves and chat. The games themselves run on the players' PCs, so even a busy lobby barely uses memory. 1 GB covers almost every group, and 2 GB is plenty for a busy public lobby. There is no realistic setup that needs more. If you ever want room for something else, switch plans in the panel. Up to 10 friends can split the bill, each paying their share.

Common questions
How do players connect to my Wesnoth server?
In the game, choose Multiplayer, then Connect to Server, and enter your server address with its port.
What does the Branch setting do?
It picks which Wesnoth release the server is built from, 1.18 by default. Players need a game from the same release series to connect.
How many players can be in the lobby?
The lobby has no small cap. Each game sets its own player count by map, usually 2 to 9 sides, and many games can run at once.
Is Wesnoth free?
Yes. It is open source and free on Windows, Mac and Linux, including on Steam. Nobody needs to buy anything to join.
How do I moderate the lobby?
Type /query admin followed by your Admin Password in the lobby. Admin commands like kick, ban and motd then work through /query.
Can we use add-ons like the Ageless Era?
Yes. Players install add-ons from the in game Add-ons menu. When someone hosts a game that needs one, the others are asked to install it too.
Are saved games stored on the server?
No. The server relays games but does not keep campaign saves. Players can save and reload multiplayer games on their own PCs.
How much RAM does a Wesnoth server need?
Very little. 1 GB is enough for nearly every lobby, since the games run on the players' machines.
Is GamezServers affiliated with The Battle for Wesnoth?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated The Battle for Wesnoth server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
