What comes set up on a OpenTTD server
Up to 15 companies
Run rival companies, one giant shared network, or both, with several players managing the same company and others spectating.
Maps that last weeks
A good OpenTTD game runs for weeks of real time. The server keeps the map alive, or paused, while everyone is away.
NewGRFs and AI rivals
Load train sets, industry replacements and AI or game scripts. Players missing a NewGRF can grab it in game from the content service.
Pick the exact version
Set the OpenTTD and OpenGFX versions in the panel so the server matches the release your group has installed.

Common problems
Clients must run the same OpenTTD version as the server. New servers install the current stable release. When a new one comes out, set OpenTTD Version in the panel and email support@gamezservers.com to reinstall it, your saves stay.
Server not showing in the list on a current version? Set server_game_type = public in the [network] section of openttd.cfg and restart. invite-only keeps it off the list but joinable by invite code or address.
Passwords live in secrets.cfg: server_password locks the server and rcon_password lets you run admin commands with rcon.
Add NewGRFs before you start the map. Changing NewGRFs on a running game can break vehicles and industries, so start a fresh map instead.
Server not responding
Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.
Use the server address
Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.
No port forwarding or firewall changes
Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.
Modding your OpenTTD server
OpenTTD has a deep catalog of NewGRF vehicle and industry sets, AI opponents and game scripts on its BaNaNaS content service, which servers and players both pull from.
OpenTTD server hosting, explained
OpenTTD is the free, open source take on Transport Tycoon Deluxe, and it has grown far past the original. Players build rail, road, sea and air networks to move passengers and cargo for profit, across maps that can reach 4096 tiles a side. Online, a server holds up to 15 companies, and several people can share one company, so you can play as rivals, as one big co-op network, or a mix of both while others spectate.
OpenTTD games are long, and that only works if the server stays on when everyone logs off. A dedicated server keeps the clock ticking, or paused, while companies wait for their owners. Long running community servers, weekly co-op maps and goal servers with game scripts all depend on that. The game is still in active development, with stable 15.x releases in 2026 and 16.0 in beta.
In the panel you set the server name, the masterlist toggle, the OpenTTD version and the OpenGFX version. The rest is the usual OpenTTD config: openttd.cfg for map and network settings including server_game_type, and secrets.cfg for the server and rcon passwords. NewGRFs, AI and game scripts upload over SFTP or the file manager, and the live console accepts every server command. One click backups protect a map you have spent weeks on.
Memory grows with map size and vehicle count. A normal map with a few companies runs on 2 GB, and a public server or a full 15 company game is comfortable on 4 GB. Huge 4096 tile maps, heavy NewGRF sets or a server where thousands of trains build up over months deserve 8 GB. With Sleep when empty, a quiet server can stop after 4 days alone and wake with one click.

Common questions
How many players can an OpenTTD server have?
A server holds up to 15 companies, and far more clients than that can connect. Several players can run the same company together, and anyone else can spectate.
Is OpenTTD free?
Yes. OpenTTD is free and open source on the official site and on Steam. Players need the same version as the server to join.
Which version does the server run?
The current stable release when the server is made, 15.3 right now. To move to a newer one, set OpenTTD Version in the panel and email support@gamezservers.com, and we reinstall it on that version with your saves kept.
Can I use NewGRFs on my server?
Yes. Upload them to the server's newgrf folder or download them from BaNaNaS with the console content commands, then enable them before starting a new game. Players can fetch missing ones in game.
How do I password my server?
Set server_password in secrets.cfg with the file manager and restart. Leave it empty for an open server.
How do company passwords work now?
Current versions dropped company passwords. Company members invite other players from the Online Players window instead.
How do I run admin commands?
Use the live console in the panel, or set rcon_password in secrets.cfg and use the rcon command from your game client.
How do I keep my server off the public list?
Set server_game_type to invite-only or local in openttd.cfg. Players can still join with your address.
Is GamezServers affiliated with OpenTTD?
No. You rent and control your own dedicated OpenTTD server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.
Can my friends and I split the cost?
Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.
Can I build a custom plan?
Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.
Can I pay once instead of a subscription?
Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.
How fast is setup, really?
Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
