What comes set up on a Necesse server

No host, no waiting

The world is up for whoever logs in. Set pauseWhenEmpty to false in server.cfg if settlers should work with nobody on.

Workshop mods

Upload mod .jar files to the server's mods folder. Everyone joining runs the same list, and the server checks it.

Room for a whole town

Set up to 99 player slots in the panel. Most friend groups use 4 to 10, community towns go far higher.

Beta branch switch

Point the Steam Beta Branch setting at a test build when your group wants to try what is coming next.

How to join your Necesse server

  1. 1

    Launch Necesse and click Multiplayer.

  2. 2

Choose Add server and give it a name.

  3. 3

Enter 203.0.113.24 as the address and {port} as the port, then save it.

  4. 4

Select the server and join, entering {SERVER_PASSWORD} if you set a password.

Common problems

Auto update is off by default. After a Necesse patch, turn Steam Auto Update on or reinstall, or players get a version mismatch.

Mods must match exactly: same mods, same versions. Have everyone subscribe on the Workshop and upload the same .jar files to the server.

Copy an existing world by uploading its save into the server's saves folder and setting Save Name to match.

Server settings like world border, item despawn and settlement limits are in cfg/server.cfg. Edit them in the file manager and restart.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Modding your Necesse server

Necesse has an active Steam Workshop. Servers load mod .jar files from their own mods folder, and every player must run the same set.

Necesse server hosting, explained

Necesse is a top down survival RPG where you build a settlement, recruit settlers with their own jobs and push out into caves, dungeons and boss fights across an infinite generated world. It left Early Access with version 1.0 in October 2025 after selling well over a million copies. In multiplayer, friends share one world: someone runs the farms and work orders while others go mining or clear the next boss.

A dedicated server keeps the colony available to whoever logs in, without one player needing to host and keep their PC on. By default the world pauses when nobody is online, which is fair for groups on different schedules, and you can switch that off in server.cfg if you want settlers working around the clock. Small friend groups are the norm, but community servers with many separate settlements and shared boss raids are common too.

In the panel you set the save name, player slots, password, auto update and a Steam beta branch if you want test builds. Everything else is in cfg/server.cfg: world border, how long dropped items last, settlement and settler limits, and the message of the day. Mods are .jar files that go into the mods folder, and the server runs from its own folder so saves, settings and mods all stay together for backups.

Necesse is a Java game and memory grows with how much of the world is explored and how big the settlements get. Four to six friends on a vanilla world run on 2 GB. Bigger groups, large towns or a mod list fit 4 GB. A community server with dozens of players spread over a huge map should go to 8 GB.

Common questions

How many players can a Necesse server hold?

Our panel accepts 1 to 99 player slots, with 10 as the default. Most friend groups run 4 to 10.

How do I join a Necesse dedicated server?

Click Multiplayer, add a server with the address and port from your panel, then select it and join.

Does Necesse support mods on a server?

Yes. Upload the mod .jar files to the server's mods folder. Every player needs the exact same mods and versions to connect.

Can I run the beta on my server?

Yes. Put the branch name in Steam Beta Branch and restart. Players must switch to the same branch in Steam.

Can I bring my single player world?

Yes. Upload the save to the server's saves folder with SFTP or the file manager, and set Save Name to the same name.

Does the server update itself?

Only if you turn on Steam Auto Update, which is off by default. With it on, the server checks for a new build on every start.

Is Necesse out of Early Access?

Yes. Version 1.0 released in October 2025.

Do settlers keep working when nobody is online?

Not by default. The server pauses the world when empty. Set pauseWhenEmpty = false in cfg/server.cfg if you want the world to keep running.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Necesse?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Necesse server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
