What comes set up on a Clone Hero server

Four lanes, one session

Up to four players share a session on guitar, bass, drums or keys, each on their own highway.

Private with a password

Set a password in the panel and only your band gets in. Change it whenever you like and restart.

Pin the server version

Run latest or a specific build like V1.0.0.4080, so the server always matches the version your group plays.

No host PC needed

The standalone server runs on its own, and players joining it never have to open a port on their router.

How to join your Clone Hero server

  1. 1

Install Clone Hero from the official site if you haven't, using the same version as the server.

  2. 2

Start the game and make sure you're in Regular mode, not Leaderboards mode.

  3. 3

Open Online from the main menu and choose Join Server.

  4. 4

Press Orange to add a server, then enter 203.0.113.24 as the IP and {port} as the port, plus the password from your panel if you set one.

  5. 5

Save it, pick the server from your list and connect.

Common problems

Songs have to match exactly. A chart that differs in any way between players shows as unavailable. Share the same song files, then rescan your songs if a track is missing.

Online needs Regular mode. Since v1.1 the game has a Leaderboards mode that is single player only. Switch back to Regular from the main menu before you join.

Can't connect or the server looks wrong? Check that everyone runs the same Clone Hero version, and set Version in the panel to that build.

Type \help in the in game chat to see the server's lobby commands.

Server not responding

Make sure the server is online. Servers sleep after 4 days with nobody playing, and anyone with access can start them again from the dashboard in one click.

Use the server address

Do not use localhost, 127.0.0.1 or your own IP from a home hosting guide. Copy the exact address of the server.

No port forwarding or firewall changes

Opening ports on your router is only for hosting a server at home, so there is nothing to change to join this one. If Windows asks whether to let the game through the firewall, choose Allow.

Clone Hero server hosting, explained

Clone Hero is the free, fan made rhythm game that plays like the old plastic guitar games, fed by a huge library of community charts. Online play arrived with v1 in 2022: up to four people share a session, each on their own lane, on guitar, bass, drums or keys. Groups use a server for weekly song nights, friendly score battles and long setlists where everyone takes a turn picking the next track.

The game ships a standalone server program, so a lobby no longer depends on one friend launching the game as host and keeping their connection steady. Ours runs around the clock and nobody joining has to touch their router. In the panel you set the server name, a password to keep it private, the log level and the server version. Keep that version in step with the build your group plays, since a mismatch is the first thing to check when something won't connect.

Songs never live on the server. Every player loads charts from their own song folder, and a song only shows up for the group when everyone has an identical copy. That is why bands that play together usually share one song pack. Since v1.1 the game also has an official Leaderboards mode, but it is single player only, so switch to Regular mode for online sessions.

This is one of the lightest servers you can run. It doesn't render anything or load songs, it just relays session data between a handful of players, so memory barely moves however long the setlist runs. The 1 GB plan covers a normal band, and 2 GB gives plenty of room for a lobby that stays up all week. Only a busy public lobby with full logging needs 4 GB.

Included on every plan

  • Low ping game hardware
  • Live the moment you pay
  • Your own address and port

Common questions

How many players can join a Clone Hero server?

Up to four people play in one session, each on their own lane. That mirrors the four player layout of the games Clone Hero is modeled on.

Do my friends need to open ports to join?

No. Only the host needs open ports, and that's handled on our side. Joining players just need a firewall that doesn't block Clone Hero.

Do we all need the same songs?

Yes. Any difference in a song's chart file makes it unavailable for the group. Share the same song files and rescan if something doesn't show up.

Do I upload songs to the server?

No. The server only relays the session. Each player plays from the song folder on their own computer.

Does the server need Clone Hero running?

No. Clone Hero has a separate server program that runs without the game, and that's what we host. You start, stop and restart it from the panel.

Can I make my Clone Hero server private?

Yes. Set a server password in the panel, using letters, numbers and underscores, then restart. Only people you share it with can join.

Why can't I play online in Leaderboards mode?

Leaderboards mode, added in v1.1, is single player only. Switch to Regular mode from the main menu to join a server.

Is Clone Hero free?

Yes. Clone Hero is free to download for Windows, Mac and Linux, so the server is the only thing your group pays for.

Is GamezServers affiliated with Clone Hero?

No. You rent and control your own dedicated Clone Hero server. GamezServers is not affiliated with the game's developer or publisher.

Can my friends and I split the cost?

Yes. At checkout choose "Me and my friends" and up to 10 people each pay their own share with their own card, on any plan length, from 3 days to a year. It is not a payment plan: nobody pays in parts over time, each friend simply pays their own share. You pay yours, send each friend their link, and the server starts straight away. Each share includes a $1 payment fee.

Can I build a custom plan?

Yes. Every game has a Build your own page: pick any amount of RAM up to 32 GB, any length from 3 days to 1 year, prepaid or a subscription, plus your server type and settings. A custom size costs 15% more per GB than the standard plans next to it.

Can I pay once instead of a subscription?

Yes. Pick Prepaid and pay once for 3 days, 30 days, 6 months or a year. Nothing renews: when the time is up the server pauses and keeps its world for 14 days. Add time or switch to a subscription from your panel any time. Short rentals cost more per day, since every server is set up from scratch.

How fast is setup, really?

Your server starts building the moment Stripe confirms payment. Most are online in under a minute, and the address and login appear on your dashboard automatically.
