A Venice Unleashed server that will not start almost always has one of two problems: the Battlefield 3 activation token has expired, or server.key is missing from the server's instance folder. A server that starts but cannot be joined usually has a client version mismatch, a broken mod or ports that are not open. This guide goes through each one, how to recognize it in the console, and how to fix it.

Read the console first

Every fix below starts from what the server prints when it starts. On a self hosted Windows server, run it without -headless so you see the window, or start vu.com -server -dedicated from a command prompt in the VU client folder so the output stays on screen. On our servers, open the live console in the panel and press restart. Read the last lines before the server stops. They nearly always name the problem.

Venice Unleashed, community servers for Battlefield 3

Problem 1: the activation token expired

Symptom: the server ran fine for weeks or months, then one day stops during startup, around the activation or license step, and never reaches the point where it accepts connections.

Why: a VU server has to activate Battlefield 3 against an EA account that owns the game. A server without the EA app, such as any rented or Linux server, activates with a token generated on a Windows PC. That token does not last forever. When it expires, activation fails on the next start.

Fix:

  1. On a Windows PC with the EA app signed in, Battlefield 3 installed and the VU client installed, open the Start Menu and run the Activate BF3 shortcut. You can also run this from the VU client folder:
vu.exe -activate -lsx
  1. Copy the token it shows.
  2. On a self hosted remote machine, activate with it:
vu.exe -activate -ea_token <token>
  1. On GamezServers, paste the new token into the Venice Unleashed server token field in the panel and restart. The server notices the token changed, clears the old license and activates again on its own.

The VU docs also mention that a Windows PC hosting a server may need to activate again after major Windows updates or hardware changes, so a home server can hit the same problem after a big update.

Problem 2: server.key is missing or in the wrong place

Symptom: the server stops almost immediately with a message about a missing server.key.

Why: every VU server needs its own key from your VU account, saved as a file named exactly server.key in the server instance folder. On a home Windows server that folder is Documents\Battlefield 3\Server by default. On our servers it is vu/instance/.

Fix:

  1. Log in on veniceunleashed.net and open the key management page.
  2. Generate a key if you have none, and download it.
  3. Make sure the file is called server.key, not server.key.txt (Windows hides extensions by default, which catches people out) and not server (1).key from a second download.
  4. Upload it into the instance folder with the file manager or SFTP and start the server.

Each key belongs to one server. Two servers running with the same key will fight over the identity.

Problem 3: grayed out server with a red outline

Symptom: the server is running and appears in the VU browser, but players see it grayed out with a red outline and cannot join.

Why: the player's VU client build does not match what the server expects, usually after a VU update.

Fix: have the player close VU completely and start it again so the client updates itself, then refresh the server list. If the server is the one that is behind, restart it. On our servers Automatic Updates is on by default and runs the VU updater at start. The template notes that the updater has occasionally crashed a server on startup right after an update, so if a restart fails just after a VU release, restart once more before anything else.

Problem 4: mods do nothing, or break the start

Symptom A: you uploaded a mod into Admin/Mods and nothing changed in game.

The VU mod documentation is clear that servers load no mods by default, even ones sitting in the folder. Each mod's folder name must be listed in Admin/ModList.txt, one per line, and the folder layout must be:

Admin/
  Mods/
    fun-bots/
      mod.json
      ...

The common mistake is one folder too deep, for example Admin/Mods/fun-bots/fun-bots/mod.json after unzipping a release. Move the inner folder up so mod.json sits directly inside the folder named in ModList.txt.

Symptom B: the server stopped starting right after you added a mod.

Remove the mod's line from ModList.txt, restart, and confirm the server comes up. Then read the console output from the failed start for the Lua error, which names the file and line. Often the mod needs a newer VU build or another mod it depends on. Add mods one at a time so you always know which one broke things. If you are adding bots, our guide to adding fun-bots to a VU server walks through a clean install.

Problem 5: running, but nobody can connect

If the server finishes starting and shows in the browser but players time out, check the network side on a self hosted server:

Port Protocol Purpose
25200 UDP Game traffic
7948 UDP Monitored Harmony, VU's networking layer
47200 TCP RCON, only if you use Procon

Forward them to the server PC and allow them through Windows Firewall. Our port forwarding guide has the router steps. On a hosted server these ports are assigned and open.

Problem 6: it is password protected and nobody knew

On our servers the panel writes vars.serverName, vars.gamePassword and admin.password into Admin/Startup.txt at every start. If you set a password in the file by hand, the panel value replaces it on the next restart, and if the panel has a password you forgot about, players will be asked for it. Check Server Password in the panel, leave it empty for an open server, and restart.

Quick diagnosis table

What you see Go to
Stops at activation after months of working Problem 1
Stops instantly mentioning server.key Problem 2
Grayed out, red outline Problem 3
Mod ignored, or crash after adding a mod Problem 4
Listed, but joins time out Problem 5
Unexpected password prompt Problem 6

Make the next failure a two minute fix

When you host it yourself, every one of these means getting to the machine. A Venice Unleashed server from GamezServers puts the token in a panel field, the key and Admin folder in the file manager and SFTP, and the startup log in a live console, so renewing a token is paste and restart. You also get the server frequency, max players, RCON password and listing as panel settings, plus one click backups before you try a new mod. Setting one up from scratch? FAQ

Why did my Venice Unleashed server suddenly stop starting?

Most often the EA activation token expired. Run Activate BF3 on your PC, copy the new token and give it to the server, then restart.

Where does server.key go?

In the server instance folder: Documents\Battlefield 3\Server on a default Windows install, or vu/instance on our servers.

Why is my VU server grayed out with a red outline?

The player's VU client does not match. Restart VU so it updates, and restart the server if it is the one behind.

Why does my mod not load on my VU server?

It is not listed in ModList.txt, or mod.json is not directly inside the mod's folder under Admin/Mods.

How often does the EA token expire?

There is no published schedule. It usually shows up after months of a server running fine, so keep the Activate BF3 shortcut handy on your PC.
