Terraria Server Version Mismatch Fix (Not the Same Version)
Fix "You are not using the same version as this server" in Terraria and tModLoader. Check versions, update the server, and handle the 1.4.5 vs 1.4.4 split.

A Terraria server version mismatch happens when your game and the server run different Terraria versions, and the game kicks you with "You are not using the same version as this server." Terraria only lets you join a server on exactly the same version, down to the last number. The fix is to update whichever side is behind, and in 2026 also to make sure vanilla and tModLoader players are not mixed, since vanilla is on 1.4.5 while stable tModLoader is still on 1.4.4.
The error
When you join through Join via IP, the connection starts and then drops with:
You are not using the same version as this server.
On modded servers you may instead see players kicked during "Syncing mods", or a message listing mods with different versions. Both mean the same thing: something on your side does not match the server.
Short answer
- Look at the version in the bottom left of your Terraria main menu, for example
v1.4.5.7. - Ask the server owner which version the server runs. They can type
versionin the server console. - Whoever is behind updates: players through Steam, the owner by updating the server.
- Vanilla players join a vanilla server with Terraria. Modded players join a tModLoader server with tModLoader.
Why it happens so often
- A patch just came out. Steam updates your game automatically, but the server stays on the old version until its owner updates it. For a day or two after every patch, most mismatches come from this.
- Someone opted into a beta. A player on a Steam beta or legacy branch is on a different version from everyone else.
- Vanilla and tModLoader mixed up. tModLoader is its own game on Steam with its own version. A Terraria client cannot join a tModLoader server, and a tModLoader client cannot join a vanilla server.
- The server was pinned to an old version. Some setups install a fixed version number instead of the latest.
Fix 1: Update your game (players)
- Close Terraria and open Steam.
- Right click Terraria in your library and choose Properties.
- Under Betas, make sure the dropdown says None, so you are on the normal public version.
- Let Steam download any update, then launch the game and check the version in the bottom left corner.
If Steam says the game is up to date but the version still looks old, choose Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
GOG and other launchers: update through the launcher and check the version the same way.
Fix 2: Update the server (owners)
- Self hosted: download the matching PC Dedicated Server zip from the footer of terraria.org. Stop the server with
exit, back up your world files, replace the server files with the new ones and start it again. Your worlds andserverconfig.txtare separate from the server files, so keep them. - Hosted on GamezServers: update the server from the panel so it matches what your players have, and click Backup first.
After updating, type version in the console to confirm. Worlds load fine on a newer version, and are upgraded when saved.
The 1.4.5 and tModLoader situation
Terraria 1.4.5, the "Bigger and Boulder" update, came out on 27 January 2026, and vanilla has had several patches since. tModLoader has not moved to 1.4.5 yet: its stable version is still based on Terraria 1.4.4, and the port to 1.4.5 is happening on a separate development branch. What that means for your group:
| Your group plays | Server type | Everyone launches |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | Vanilla server, latest version | Terraria |
| Mods (Calamity, Thorium, and so on) | tModLoader server, latest stable | tModLoader |
The two worlds do not mix freely either. A world last saved in vanilla 1.4.5 is newer than what stable tModLoader understands, so do not plan to move a 1.4.5 world onto a modded server until tModLoader supports 1.4.5. Keep a backup before trying.
Fixing mismatches on a tModLoader server
For tModLoader, three things must match: the tModLoader version, the mods and the mod versions.
- tModLoader version: in Steam, right click tModLoader, Properties, Betas, and choose None for the normal stable version. The server should run the latest stable too.
- Mods: when you connect, tModLoader compares your mods with the server's and offers to download the ones the server uses. Accept it and restart when asked.
- Mod versions: if a mod updated on the Workshop, the server needs the same update. Owners update the mod files on the server and restart.
If syncing keeps failing, disable all your mods in tModLoader, restart it, and join again so it downloads exactly the server's set. Our guide on adding mods to a Terraria server covers the server side.
Other versions: console, mobile and cracked copies
- Console and mobile use their own versions and multiplayer. They cannot join a PC dedicated server at all.
- Pirated copies are often stuck on old versions and cannot update, so they never match a current server.
Still getting kicked?
If versions match and you still cannot get in, the problem is the connection, not the version. See Terraria can't connect to server for the connection fixes.
The easy way
On a GamezServers server you update the server from the panel after a patch instead of downloading zips, switch between vanilla and tModLoader in the same panel, and back up your world in one click before any change. See Terraria server hosting, or the quick start guide for the full walkthrough.
FAQ
How do I check my Terraria version?
It is shown in the bottom left corner of the main menu. For tModLoader, the tModLoader version is shown there instead.
How do I check the server's version?
Type version in the server console. The server also prints its version when it starts.
Can I join a vanilla server with tModLoader?
No. tModLoader players join tModLoader servers, and vanilla Terraria players join vanilla servers.
Why did Terraria update without asking?
Steam updates games automatically by default. That is why servers need updating soon after every patch.
