If Project Zomboid is stuck on "Loading Map" or "Loading the world" in multiplayer, update the game and server to the latest Build 42 version first, since hotfix 42.20.3 fixed a client hang on "Loading Map". If it still hangs, delete your local cache for that server, have an admin remove your user entry, and check mods and memory.

Quick fix

  1. Update the game and restart the server so both run the same build (42.21 as of October 2026).
  2. Close Project Zomboid completely, then restart Steam, so no stuck process is left behind.
  3. Delete your local folder for this server in %UserProfile%\Zomboid\Saves\Multiplayer.
  4. Ask the admin to delete your entry in the server's Users list, then join again with your username and password.
  5. If it only happens on a modded server, have the admin run checkModsNeedUpdate and restart.

Why does Project Zomboid get stuck on Loading Map?

The loading screen is where your game downloads the server's settings, mods and the map around your character. It hangs when one of those steps never finishes. The usual causes:

Cause Who fixes it
Old build with the known loading hang Everyone updates
Corrupt local cache for that server The player
A broken entry for your account on the server The admin
Mod or map mismatch The admin
Server out of memory or still starting The admin
Game or Steam process still running in the background The player

Was this a known Build 42 bug?

Yes. After Build 42.20 went stable on 29 July 2026, many players got stuck joining multiplayer games. On 1 August 2026, an official Indie Stone representative on the Steam support forum called it a known issue under investigation and suggested hosting a server yourself, disconnecting and then joining your friend's server as a workaround.

Fixes followed in the hotfixes:

  • 42.20.1 (5 August 2026): fixed major chunk unloading lag on multiplayer servers and a memory leak.
  • 42.20.3 (17 August 2026): "Fixed an issue that would cause the client to hang on 'Loading Map' forever," plus more memory leak fixes (patch notes).
  • 42.21 (28 September 2026): added a notification when you try to join a server on a different game version, so a silent hang from a version mismatch is less likely.

If you are on 42.20.0 or a stuck Steam download, updating is the fix. Check your version on the main menu.

Fix 1: Update and fully restart

  1. In Steam, right click Project Zomboid, open Properties, then Game Versions & Betas, and make sure you are on the default branch, not unstable or an old beta, unless the server runs that too.
  2. Let any update finish.
  3. Close the game. Then exit Steam from the system tray and start it again. Closing only the game window can leave a stuck Host or Join session running.

The server owner should restart the server after a patch so it updates too.

Fix 2: Clear your cache for that server

Your game keeps local data for every server you join. If it is damaged, you hang on loading every time.

  1. Close the game.
  2. Open %UserProfile%\Zomboid\Saves\Multiplayer on Windows, or ~/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer on Linux and macOS.
  3. Rename or delete the folder for that server. Its name contains the server's IP address.
  4. Join again. Your character is stored on the server, not in this folder.

Fix 3: Have the admin reset your user entry

A community workaround, also posted in the same Steam thread: an admin opens the admin panel, finds you in the Users list, and deletes your entry. You can then join with your username and password and the server creates your account again. Your character data may be reset, so ask the admin to back up first. On older 42.20 builds this sometimes had to be repeated after a death or disconnect, which updating avoids.

Fix 4: Check mods and maps

On modded servers, a loading hang is often a mod problem:

  • Every Workshop mod must have finished updating on the server. Run checkModsNeedUpdate, and restart if any mod is out of date. A clear version mismatch shows as our workshop item version is different than server's error instead.
  • Map mods must be in the Map= line before Muldraugh, KY. A missing or misordered map folder can leave clients waiting forever.
  • Remove recently added mods one at a time to find a culprit. Mods that only support Build 41 are a frequent cause on Build 42 servers.

Our guide to adding mods to a Project Zomboid server shows the correct format for Workshop IDs, Mod IDs and maps.

Fix 5: Check the server is healthy

If everyone hangs, not just you, look at the server:

  • Still starting. A big modded server can take minutes to load. Wait until the console says the server has started.
  • Out of memory. Look for OutOfMemoryError in the server console or log. Raise the Java heap (-Xmx) or move to a bigger plan.
  • Stuck chunk generation. 42.20.0 fixed a case where servers could hang during chunk generation, another reason to stay updated.

The Project Zomboid lag and rubberbanding fix covers memory and heap sizing in more detail. If you cannot reach the server at all, see Project Zomboid can't connect to server.

On a GamezServers server

Our servers update to the latest Project Zomboid build every time they start and size the Java heap to your plan, which rules out the two most common server side causes. If a player still hangs on Loading Map, restart the server, have the player clear their cache (Fix 2), and use Check mod updates in the panel. Our 24/7 support can look at the server log with you. FAQ

Why is Project Zomboid stuck on Loading Map?

Usually an outdated build with the known 42.20 loading hang, a corrupt local cache for the server, a mod mismatch, or a server short on memory. Update first, then clear the cache.

Was the Loading Map bug fixed?

Yes. Hotfix 42.20.3 on 17 August 2026 fixed the client hanging on "Loading Map" forever. Later updates added more multiplayer fixes.

Will deleting my Multiplayer save folder delete my character?

No. On a dedicated server your character is stored on the server. The local folder is a cache your game rebuilds.

Why does only one player get stuck loading?

The problem is on their side: an old version, a damaged cache, or a broken account entry on the server. Fixes 1 to 3 cover it.

Can a full server cause a loading hang?

A full server should refuse the connection rather than hang. Since 42.20.3, admins can join even when the server is full.
