To use Project Zomboid admin commands, make yourself admin first: type setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin in the server console, or log in with the built in admin account and run /setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin in chat. Then type commands in chat with a slash, like /teleport, /additem and /kickuser, or open the admin panel from the menu. This list is written for Build 42 dedicated servers.

How to become admin

From the server console

The server console runs with full rights, so it is the easiest place to start. Commands here have no slash:

setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin

Use the username you created when you first joined the server, not your Steam name, if they differ. Quotes are needed when the name has spaces.

With the built in admin account

The first time a dedicated server starts, it asks for a password for an account called admin. Join the server with username admin and that password, then promote your normal account from chat:

/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" admin

Log out and back in on your own account.

Access levels

Build 42 uses roles: admin, moderator, overseer, gm and observer, plus normal players. Each role carries a set of capabilities, and an admin can change what each role is allowed to do, so the exact rights depend on your server. To remove rights, use none:

setaccesslevel "PlayerName" none

A normal player cannot promote themselves. Whoever runs setaccesslevel must already have the permission to change access levels.

Console vs chat

  • In game chat: start every command with /, for example /players.
  • Server console or RCON: same commands without the slash, for example players.
  • Help: /help lists every command available on your build. If a guide and /help disagree, trust /help.

Booleans use a leading dash: -true and -false, not bare true.

Player management

Command What it does
/players List connected players
/kickuser "name" -r "reason" Kick a player
/banuser "name" -r "reason" Ban a player. Add -ip to ban their IP too
/unbanuser "name" Lift a ban
/banid SteamID / /unbanid SteamID Ban or unban by SteamID64
/adduser "name" "password" Create an account on a whitelist only server
/addusertowhitelist "name" Whitelist a player who is already connected
/removeuserfromwhitelist "name" Remove from the whitelist
/setpassword "name" "newpassword" Reset a player's password
/voiceban "name" -true Mute someone's voice chat

Teleport and cheats

Command What it does
/teleport "name" Teleport yourself to a player
/teleport "player1" "player2" Teleport player1 to player2
/teleportto x,y,z Teleport to coordinates, for example /teleportto 10000,11000,0
/godmode -true God mode for yourself. The old spelling /godmod also works
/godmodeplayer "name" -true God mode for another player
/invisible -true Zombies ignore you
/noclip -true Walk through walls

Items, XP and events

Command What it does
/additem "name" Base.Axe 1 Give an item. Use the full type with module, like Base.Axe
/addvehicle "Base.VanAmbulance" "name" Spawn a vehicle next to a player
/addxp "name" Woodwork=500 Give XP in a skill
/createhorde 50 "name" Spawn a horde near a player
/chopper Trigger the helicopter event on a random player
/gunshot Play a loud gunshot on a random player to draw zombies
/alarm Sound a building alarm where you stand

Item and vehicle names come from the game's scripts. The admin panel's item list shows them if you do not know the exact type.

Weather

Command What it does
/startrain 50 Start rain, intensity 1 to 100
/stoprain Stop rain
/startstorm 12 Start a storm for a number of in game hours
/stopweather Clear the weather

Server commands

Command What it does
/servermsg "text" Broadcast a message to everyone
/save Save the world now
/quit Save and shut down the server
/showoptions Show current server options
/changeoption PVP false Change a server option live
/reloadoptions Reload the ini file after an edit
/checkModsNeedUpdate Check whether any Workshop mod has updated, result goes to the log

/changeoption only covers server options from the ini file, not sandbox settings like zombie count or water shutoff. Those live in the SandboxVars file.

Always use /quit (or quit in the console) to stop the server. It saves first. Killing the process can roll back bases.

A good routine before updates

  1. servermsg "Restarting in 5 minutes for mod updates"
  2. save
  3. Take a backup.
  4. quit, update, start again.

On our control panel, Save world, Broadcast, List players and Start rain are one click buttons, and Backup is right next to them.

Common problems

  • "You don't have the rights to use this command": you are not admin, or your role lacks that capability. Promote yourself from the server console.
  • Command does nothing in the console: you typed a slash. Drop it in the console.
  • /additem says the item is unknown: include the module, like Base.Axe, and check the spelling.
  • Admin panel missing: log out and back in after promotion.

Skip the setup

Before you can type a single admin command on a self hosted server, you need SteamCMD, Java memory settings and UDP ports forwarded. A Project Zomboid server from GamezServers is online in about a minute with a full console in your browser, so setaccesslevel is the first thing you type. See how to host a Project Zomboid server.
