NWN EE Server Can't Connect Fix (Friends Can't Join or See It)

Why players can't join your Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server, from build mismatches and UDP 5121 to missing haks, ELC and level limits.

When friends can't connect to a Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server, the cause is almost always one of four things: the server runs a different game build than their client, UDP port 5121 is not reachable from the internet, they are missing the module's hak or TLK files, or the server's character rules (ELC, level range, vault mode) reject their character. Each one fails in a recognizable way, so start by noting exactly what the player sees.

Connection hangs, then times out Port not open, wrong address, or server not running Port and address
Rejected straight away, mentions version Server build differs from the client Build mismatch
"Missing required Hak file" Player lacks haks or TLK, or file name case on Linux Missing haks
Connects, then kicked at character select ELC, ILR or level range Character rules
Asked for a password that "does not work" Player and DM passwords swapped or stale Passwords

Build mismatch

NWN:EE clients and servers must share the same major version to connect at all, and mismatched minor builds cause their own trouble. The current release is 8193.37-17, published in October 2025. If your server was installed from an older package, every up to date Steam or GOG player will fail to join even though the server looks healthy.

Fix it by running the server on the exact build your players have. Check the version shown in the game client, then:

  • Self hosted: download nwnee-dedicated-8193.37-17.zip (or your build) from nwn.beamdog.net/downloads/ and replace the old binaries, or update the game through Steam or GOG if you run the bundled nwserver.exe.
  • Hosted: set the build in your control panel and reinstall the server files. Back up the user folder first so modules and the server vault are safe.

If one player is behind, the fix is on their side: update the game, and on Steam make sure they are not opted into an old beta branch.

Port and address

Neverwinter Nights uses UDP 5121 by default. A TCP rule on the router does nothing for it, which is the single most common port forwarding mistake for this game.

  1. Forward UDP 5121 to the local IP of the PC running nwserver. Our port forwarding guide covers most routers.
  2. Allow nwserver.exe through Windows Firewall on private and public networks.
  3. Give friends your public IP, not the 192.168.x.x address, and add the port if it is not 5121: 203.0.113.25:5122.
  4. If you started the server with -port, forward that port instead.
  5. Test from outside your house. Connecting from the same PC or LAN proves nothing about the forward.

If the forward is right and outside players still time out, check whether your router's WAN address matches your public IP. If it does not, your provider uses carrier grade NAT, and no forward will help. You need one of the options in hosting without port forwarding, or a hosted server that already has a public address.

Missing haks

When a module uses hak packs, every player needs the same haks, and the same custom TLK if there is one, before they can enter. The error is "Missing required Hak file", and it shows the same text whether the missing piece is a hak or a TLK.

  • Send players the exact hak and TLK versions the server runs. An older CEP than the one the module expects counts as missing.
  • Players put haks in Documents\Neverwinter Nights\hak and TLKs in Documents\Neverwinter Nights\tlk.
  • On a Linux server, file names are case sensitive. If the module references myworld_tiles and the file is MyWorld_Tiles.hak, the server itself can fail to find it. Lowercase hak file names on Linux servers are the safe choice.
  • If the error persists with all files in place, read the server log. A broken 2DA or a bad TLK can surface as a missing hak.

Persistent worlds with many haks usually set up NWSync, Beamdog's system that lets the client download a server's content automatically. It needs the content published to a web host and the server pointed at it, so it is worth doing once the module is stable. For the full module workflow, see adding a custom module and hak packs.

Character rules

A player who reaches character selection and then bounces is usually being rejected by server rules, not by the network.

  • Enforce Legal Characters (ELC) rejects characters with stats, feats or skills the rules do not allow, which includes characters made with editors or with a different set of custom content.
  • Item Level Restrictions (ILR) blocks gear above the character's level.
  • Minimum and Maximum Level turn away characters outside the range. A level 1 start world with a minimum of 3 by mistake locks everyone out.
  • Server Vault Mode set to server characters means local vault characters from a player's PC cannot be brought in. New players create a character on the server instead.

Turn a rule off briefly to confirm which one is responsible, then fix the character or the setting.

Passwords

The player password and the DM password are separate. A player typing the DM password, or a DM using the player client, gets refused. After changing a password, restart the server so it takes effect, and tell players to clear the password saved in their Direct Connect entry.

Not listed in the browser

A server only shows up in the in-game list when it runs with -publicserver 1 (on our panel, Is Public Game). Even then, players looking for a private group should not rely on the list. Direct Connect with the address always works and is quicker. If you are listed but under the wrong category, check the Game Type setting, which picks the browser room the server is posted to.

Skip the router entirely

Most of these problems vanish when the server is not in someone's house. A GamezServers Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition server has its own address with nothing to forward, the Game Version field to match your players' build, and every rule above (ELC, ILR, level range, vault mode, both passwords, public listing) as a setting in the control panel. Haks and modules upload through the file manager or SFTP, and the live console shows the server output as it runs. DDoS protection is always on, and support answers by email at support@gamezservers.com.

FAQ

Why can I join my own NWN server but my friends can't?

You are connecting over your local network, which skips the router. Your friends need UDP 5121 forwarded to your PC and your public IP, not the local one.

Is Neverwinter Nights EE port 5121 TCP or UDP?

UDP. Forward UDP 5121, or the port you set with -port.

Can Diamond Edition players join an Enhanced Edition server?

No. The original 1.69 game and Enhanced Edition are separate versions and cannot play together. Everyone needs Enhanced Edition on the same build.

Do players need hak packs to join?

Yes, if the module uses them. They need the same haks and TLK installed locally, or delivered through NWSync if the server has it set up.

Why does my character get kicked when I join a persistent world?

Usually Enforce Legal Characters, the level range or server vault mode. Make a new character on the server, or ask the admin which rule is rejecting you.
