"Multiplayer is disabled. Please check your Microsoft account settings." means the Microsoft account you play on is not allowed to join multiplayer games. Minecraft is fine, the server is fine: one privacy switch on the account is set to block. For an adult account, you change it yourself in your Xbox privacy settings online. For a child account in a Microsoft family group, the parent or organiser allows it in Microsoft Family Safety or the Xbox Family Settings app. After the change, sign out of the launcher and back in. Here are the exact steps for each case.

Why Minecraft says multiplayer is disabled

Since Minecraft Java moved to Microsoft accounts, the game reads the Xbox privacy settings on your account when you log in. One of them decides whether you can join multiplayer games. If it is set to block, the Multiplayer button is greyed out on the title screen, or you see the error when you try to join a server or a Realm.

It is a setting on the account, not on your PC. Changing computers or reinstalling Minecraft will not help, and the same account shows the same error everywhere.

The usual reasons the switch is off:

  • The account belongs to someone under 18 and was added to a Microsoft family group, where multiplayer is often blocked by default for younger children.
  • The account was created with a birthday that makes it a child account.
  • Someone tightened the Xbox privacy settings and turned multiplayer off along with other things.

Fix 1: Adult accounts, change your Xbox privacy settings

If you are the adult owner of the account:

  1. Go to xbox.com in a browser and sign in with the Microsoft account you use for Minecraft.
  2. Open your profile menu and go to Privacy & online safety, then Xbox privacy.
  3. Choose View details & customize, then open the section for game content or communication.
  4. Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow, and click Submit.
  5. While you are there, check Others can communicate with voice, text or invites if you also want chat on servers.

Microsoft moves these pages around now and then, so the menu names can differ slightly, but the setting is always called something like "join multiplayer games".

Then close Minecraft and the launcher completely, open the launcher, sign out, sign back in and start the game.

Fix 2: Child accounts, allow it from the parent's account

If the account is in a Microsoft family group, the child cannot change it. The parent or family organiser does it from their own account:

On the web:

  1. Go to family.microsoft.com and sign in with the parent's account.
  2. Select the child's profile.
  3. Open the Xbox online safety or privacy section.
  4. Set Join multiplayer games to Allow.
  5. If you want them to chat, also allow communication. You can choose Friends rather than everyone.

With the Xbox Family Settings app (iOS and Android):

  1. Open the app and select the child.
  2. Go to Online safety.
  3. Turn on Multiplayer and set communication to the level you are comfortable with.

The child then signs out and back into the Minecraft Launcher. Our guide on making a Minecraft server safe for kids covers what else to set up on the server side if you are running one for your children, like a whitelist and no PvP.

Fix 3: Wait, then refresh your login

Changes to the account can take a little while to reach Minecraft. If you changed the setting and still see the error:

  1. Wait 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Close the game and the launcher fully, including from the system tray.
  3. Open the launcher, sign out of the account, and sign in again.
  4. Start the game and try the Multiplayer button.

If you use a third party launcher, remove and re-add the Microsoft account in it, since it may hold an old login token.

Fix 4: Make sure you are on the right account

People with more than one Microsoft account, or a family where everyone shares one PC, often change the setting on one account and play on another.

  • In the Minecraft Launcher, check the account name at the top left.
  • On xbox.com, check the Gamertag of the account you changed.
  • They must match.

Does this affect Open to LAN and Bedrock?

The setting is about online play: servers and Realms. Do not rely on workarounds, fixing the account setting is the real solution and takes a few minutes.

Bedrock Edition uses the same Xbox privacy settings. On Bedrock the symptom is a message about your account not being able to play multiplayer, or the Friends and Servers tabs not working. The fix is the same switch. Consoles may also need the platform's own online subscription for online play. Joining Bedrock servers on consoles is covered in how to join a Bedrock server on Xbox, PS5 and Switch.

Once multiplayer works

Add the server with Multiplayer, then Add Server, and paste the full address including the port. If you are the one running the server, a GamezServers Minecraft server gives you the address at the top of the panel and a Whitelist player button for each friend. Families who want a private world often start with how to play Minecraft with friends to compare a server, Realms and LAN, and the server can be paid for with credits from sharing a link, see free Minecraft server hosting.

FAQ

How do I fix "Multiplayer is disabled" in Minecraft?

Allow "join multiplayer games" in the Xbox privacy settings of your Microsoft account at xbox.com. For a child account, a parent allows it at family.microsoft.com or in the Xbox Family Settings app. Then sign out of the launcher and back in.

Why is my Multiplayer button greyed out in Minecraft?

The same account setting. Minecraft greys out the button when the account is not allowed to join multiplayer games.

Can a child turn multiplayer on by themselves?

No. In a Microsoft family group, only the parent or family organiser can change it.

I changed the setting but it still says disabled. What now?

Wait 10 to 15 minutes, close the launcher fully, sign out and sign back in. Check you changed the setting on the same account you play on.

Is multiplayer disabled because the server is down?

No. This message comes from your account, before Minecraft contacts any server. A server problem shows as "Can't connect to server" or a timeout instead.
