To use admin commands on a Killing Floor 2 server, open the console in game and type AdminLogin yourpassword, using the server's admin password. Then prefix commands with Admin: Admin PlayerList to see who is on, Admin Kick PlayerName, Admin KickBan PlayerName and Admin ChangeMap KF-BurningParis. AdminSay broadcasts a message and AdminLogout ends the session. The admin password is set with AdminPassword in the server config or on the server's launch line.

Where the admin password comes from

A KF2 server takes its admin password from one of two places:

  • The launch line: KFServer.exe KF-BioticsLab?AdminPassword=secret
  • The game config: AdminPassword=secret in PCServer-KFGame.ini on Windows or LinuxServer-KFGame.ini on Linux, in the KFGame/Config folder.

If it is set in both, the launch line wins. Change it with the server stopped, since the server can write its config back on shutdown. Setting up the server from scratch is covered in how to host a Killing Floor 2 server.

Opening the console

The KF2 console has to be available on your client first. Check the game's options for the console setting if pressing the console key does nothing. Players commonly use ~ (tilde) or the backtick key next to 1, depending on keyboard layout. Some players report that one console key only accepts a few commands such as AdminLogin and AdminSay, while the other gives the full console. If commands seem ignored, try the other key.

Logging in

AdminLogin yourpassword

Capitalisation matters for some players, so type AdminLogin exactly as shown. If the password is right, you get a confirmation and admin rights for the rest of your session. To give them up:

AdminLogout

The commands you will actually use

Command What it does
Admin PlayerList Lists connected players with their IDs
Admin Kick PlayerName Kicks a player by name
Admin KickBan PlayerName Kicks and bans a player
Admin ChangeMap MapName Switches the server to another map
AdminSay message Sends a message to all players as admin
AdminLogout Ends your admin session

Admin PlayerList comes first, because names in KF2 are often long, full of symbols or nearly identical. Copy the exact name from the list before kicking.

Changing maps

Use the map's file name, which starts with KF-:

Admin ChangeMap KF-BurningParis
Admin ChangeMap KF-Outpost
Admin ChangeMap KF-Farmhouse

A few stock maps to get started: KF-BioticsLab, KF-BurningParis, KF-Outpost, KF-Catacombs, KF-EvacuationPoint, KF-Farmhouse, KF-BlackForest, KF-Prison and KF-ContainmentStation. Workshop maps work too, once they are downloaded and set up on the server. Our Workshop maps guide covers that.

Kicking and banning

A kick removes the player, who can come back. Use it for AFK players taking a slot in a six player game or a first warning. KickBan adds them to the server's ban list so they cannot rejoin. Bans are stored in the server's config, so if you ever need to lift one, edit the ban entries there with the server stopped.

When commands do not work

Problem Fix
AdminLogin says nothing Console not enabled or wrong console key. Check the options and try the other key
Login rejected Wrong password, or the launch line overrides the ini. Check both
Admin Kick does nothing Name not exact. Copy it from Admin PlayerList
ChangeMap fails Map name wrong, or a Workshop map not yet downloaded on the server
Only AdminSay works You are in the limited console. Use the other console key

WebAdmin, the browser alternative

KF2 also ships with WebAdmin, a browser page for changing maps, managing players and editing settings. It is turned on in KFWeb.ini (bEnabled=true under the WebServer section) and listens on TCP port 8080 by default. You log in with the user Admin and the server's admin password.

WebAdmin is handy for tweaks you would otherwise make in the ini files, but it is also a web page on the internet with admin powers. If you turn it on, use a strong admin password, and consider leaving it off when you do not need it. The console commands above work either way.

Admin habits for a co-op server

  • Talk first. AdminSay before you kick someone, especially in a public game where they may not read chat.
  • Map changes between waves, not mid wave, unless the game is lost anyway.
  • Keep the password out of public Discord channels. Anyone with it can kick your whole group.
  • Back up before editing configs. One broken line in KFGame.ini can stop the server from starting.

Admin on a hosted KF2 server

On a GamezServers Killing Floor 2 server, the admin password is a setting in the control panel and is written into the server config on every start, so AdminLogin works from the first boot. The panel also sets the starting map, server name and difficulty from Normal to Hell on Earth, and the config files are in the file manager or over SFTP for map cycles, game passwords and mutators. A stock six player co-op server is comfortable on 3 GB, and the group can split the bill.
