The Hytale server commands you will use most are /op add <player> to make someone an operator, /kick <player> and /ban <player> for moderation, /whitelist add <player> and /whitelist enable for a private server, and /who to see who is online. Run them in the server console, which has full permissions, or in game chat once you are an operator. For the full list on your own server, type /help. Everything below is checked against the current release server (version 0.6.8, September 2026).
How to run commands
- Server console: type the command and press Enter. The console can run everything.
- In game: open chat and type the command. You need the right permission, which operators have.
- Help:
/helplists every command you can use, and/help <command>explains one. Chat also tab completes command names and arguments.
How to make yourself an operator
From the server console:
/op add YourName
The player needs to be online for a name to work. You can also use their UUID, which /whoami shows in game.
/op self exists too, but on a dedicated server it only works if the server was started with the --allow-op launch option. Leave that off on a public server, since it lets anyone op themselves. The other route is adding yourself to the operator group in permissions.json while the server is stopped.
Since Update 5 Hytale also has proper permission groups, so you can give friends a role with only the commands they need instead of full operator. See the permissions section below.

Permission commands take the player's UUID, not their name. Get it with /whoami in game. Permissions are saved in permissions.json. Edit that file only while the server is stopped, because the server writes it when permissions change.

Commands on GamezServers Hytale servers
Hytale servers on GamezServers are coming soon. When they open, every command above works from the panel's live console, and the most common ones are one click buttons: Broadcast, List players, Make operator, Kick player, Ban player, Unban player, Whitelist player and turning the whitelist on or off. Authentication is a one time device login when the server first starts, and the login is saved for you after that.
Check the Hytale server hosting page and join the waitlist to get an email when you can deploy. Until then, how to make a Hytale server covers self hosting.
FAQ
How do I give myself op on a Hytale server?
Run /op add YourName in the server console while you are online. The console has every permission, so it works even before anyone is an operator.
Why does /op self not work?
On a dedicated server it is off unless the server starts with --allow-op. Use /op add from the console instead.
How do I make my Hytale server private?
Add every player with /whitelist add <player>, including yourself, then run /whitelist enable. A join password set in config.json is another option.
Are Hytale commands case sensitive?
Command names are written in lowercase, and that always works. Use the exact spelling of player names, or tab completion to fill them in.
Where is the full list of Hytale commands?
On your own server: /help shows every command you have permission for. Commands change between early access updates, so /help is always the most current list.
