The official Hytale server requirements are Java 25, at least 4 GB of RAM, and an x64 or arm64 machine running Windows, Linux or macOS, with UDP port 5520 reachable. That minimum fits a handful of friends on default settings. Plugins, more players, a longer view distance or players spreading out across the map all push memory up, and 8 GB is a sensible target for most community servers.

Short answer

Group RAM Notes
Up to 10 friends, vanilla 4 GB The official minimum. Keep view distance at 12 chunks.
Up to 30 players or plugins 8 GB Room for mods and players exploring in different directions.
Large public server or heavy mods 12 GB or more Or a bigger view distance.

These match the plans we are preparing on our Hytale server hosting page.

The official Hytale server requirements

Hypixel's Hytale Server Manual lists:

  • Java 25. Hypixel recommends the Adoptium (Eclipse Temurin) build. Older Java versions will not start the server. Check with java --version.
  • At least 4 GB of memory.
  • x64 or arm64. Both processor architectures are supported, so an Apple Silicon Mac or an arm64 Linux machine can run it, as long as it has the memory.
  • Network: QUIC over UDP, port 5520 by default.

The server is a single Java file, HytaleServer.jar, plus the game's Assets.zip, so disk space is modest. Worlds grow as players explore, so give it a few GB of free space on an SSD and room for backups.

What uses RAM on a Hytale server

Hypixel names two main drivers:

  1. Loaded world area. Every chunk around every player has to be in memory. The bigger the view distance, the more chunks each player loads.
  2. Players exploring on their own. Ten players building one town share most of their loaded chunks. Ten players heading off in ten directions each load their own area, which can cost several times more.

Mods and plugins add on top, depending on what they do. Large asset packs and plugins that track a lot of data are the heaviest.

View distance is the biggest lever

View distance is set by MaxViewRadius in the server's config.json, measured in chunks. Hypixel's advice is to cap it at 12 chunks, which is 384 blocks, roughly the same as 24 Minecraft chunks. Because the loaded area is a square around each player, doubling the radius roughly quadruples the chunks loaded.

To change it:

  1. Stop the server. Hypixel notes that config files are read on startup and changes made in game overwrite manual edits, so edit only while it is stopped.
  2. Open config.json and set "MaxViewRadius": 12, or lower for a small machine.
  3. Start the server again.

If memory keeps climbing or the server stutters when players spread out, lowering this is the first thing to try.

CPU requirements

Hypixel notes that CPU load rises with player and entity counts: mobs, NPCs, projectiles and anything moving. There is no official core count, but in practice:

  • 2 cores is the floor for a small group.
  • 4 cores or more is better for 10 or more players or heavy plugins.
  • Fast single core speed helps, as it does for most game servers.

Setting memory for the server

You tell Java how much memory to use with -Xms (starting size) and -Xmx (maximum):

java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -XX:AOTCache=HytaleServer.aot -jar HytaleServer.jar --assets ../Assets.zip

Leave headroom for the operating system. On an 8 GB machine, giving the server 6 GB is about the most you should do. The -XX:AOTCache flag uses the cache file that ships with the server to start faster.

Running it at home vs hosted

At home, the server also needs your machine to stay on, your upload speed to keep up and UDP 5520 forwarded on your router. Every player uses upload bandwidth, so a slow home connection can cause lag even when RAM and CPU are fine. A hosted server avoids all three, and our Hytale quick start guide explains what that will look like on GamezServers once Hytale servers open.

Skip the sizing guesswork

We are preparing Hytale servers on 4, 8 and 12 GB plans, and you can change plan any time if you guess wrong. They are not open yet, so join the waitlist on the Hytale server hosting page and we will email you when you can be first on your own server.

FAQ

How much RAM does a Hytale server need?

At least 4 GB, the official minimum, for a small group on default settings. Plan on 8 GB for plugins or up to 30 players, and 12 GB or more for large public servers or a big view distance.

How much RAM per player does Hytale need?

There is no official per player number. How far players spread out matters more than the count: a group sharing one base uses far less than the same group exploring separately.

Can a Hytale server run on a Raspberry Pi or Mac?

The server supports arm64 as well as x64, so Apple Silicon Macs and arm64 boards can run it with Java 25. Make sure the machine has enough memory to give the server 4 GB.

Does a Hytale server need a graphics card?

No. The server has no graphics. RAM, CPU and a fast connection are what matter.

What Java version does a Hytale server need?

Java 25. If java --version shows an older version, install Java 25 or point your PATH at it.
