To transfer an Enshrouded save to a dedicated server, stop the server, copy your world file from your PC into the server's savegame folder, and make sure it is named 3ad85aea, the name the server loads. Your first world already has that name. Other worlds have a different 8 character ID and need renaming. Your character stays on your own PC and joins the world like any other player.
Short answer
- Find your saves:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<your id>\1203620\remotewith Steam Cloud on, or%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshroudedwith it off. - Stop the dedicated server and back up its
savegamefolder. - Copy your world file (and its
_infoand-indexfiles if you have them) into the server'ssavegamefolder. - If the world ID is not
3ad85aea, rename that part of each file name to3ad85aea. - Start the server.
Step 1: Find your Enshrouded save files
Where your saves are depends on Steam Cloud:
| Steam Cloud | Save folder |
|---|---|
| On (the default) | C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<your Steam ID>\1203620\remote |
| Off | %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshrouded |
1203620 is Enshrouded's Steam app ID. If you have several folders under userdata, open the one that contains a 1203620 folder. Manage > Browse local files in Steam opens the game's install folder, not your saves, so do not look there.
Step 2: Work out which file is your world
Enshrouded names worlds with an 8 character hexadecimal ID and no file extension:
- The first world you ever created is
3ad85aea. - Worlds you created later have their own IDs.
- Files ending in
_infohold that world's details, and files ending in-indexhelp the game find the latest save. Numbered copies such as3ad85aea-1are earlier save states. - Character files are separate. You do not copy them.
If you have several worlds and are not sure which is which, sort by Date modified. The world you played last will be the newest. You can also start Enshrouded, play a minute in the world you want, quit, and see which file just changed.
Step 3: Stop the server and back up
Never upload while the server is running. It writes its own world to disk and can overwrite your upload within seconds. Stop it, then download or zip the server's current savegame folder so you can roll back. On a hosted server, press Backup in the control panel first.
Step 4: Upload and rename
Copy your world file into the server's savegame folder, along with its _info and -index files if they exist.
- Self hosted:
savegamesits next toenshrouded_server.exe, unless you changedsaveDirectoryinenshrouded_server.json. - GamezServers: open the Files tab and go into
savegame. The files are small, so the browser upload works. SFTP (in Settings, click Show SFTP login) is there too.
If your world is not 3ad85aea, rename the ID part of each file you uploaded. For a world called a1b2c3d4:
| Uploaded as | Rename to |
|---|---|
a1b2c3d4 |
3ad85aea |
a1b2c3d4_info |
3ad85aea_info |
a1b2c3d4-index |
3ad85aea-index |
Delete or move away any old 3ad85aea files from the server first, so the server cannot pick up its own old world. Make sure Windows did not add a .txt or other extension while copying. The files have no extension at all.
Step 5: Start the server and check
Start the server and join. Your base, map progress and flame level for the world should be as you left them, and your character arrives with its own inventory and skills, since characters live on each player's PC.
If you see a fresh world instead, stop the server and check the names. Nine times out of ten the file is not called exactly 3ad85aea, or an old world file was still in the folder.
Before Enshrouded 1.0
Enshrouded 1.0 releases on 15 October. Big releases can change how saves load, so:
- Keep a copy of your world files on your own PC as well as on the server.
- Take a server backup before you update.
- Update the server before anyone joins, so the world is loaded by the new version first.
Moving the world back to your PC
It works in reverse. Stop the server, download 3ad85aea and its _info and -index files from savegame, and put them in your local save folder. If you already have a local world called 3ad85aea, it gets replaced, so back up your local saves first. If Steam Cloud is on, quit Steam while you copy, so cloud sync does not overwrite your files.
Common problems
- Server made a new world: file name wrong, a file extension was added, or an old world was still in
savegame. - World loads but is an old version: you copied an older numbered copy, or the server was running during the upload.
- Base is there but permissions are odd: player roles come from
userGroupsin the server config, not the save. Players need the right role password. See the Enshrouded server settings guide. - Cannot find the save folder: check both locations in the table above.
FAQ
Where are Enshrouded save files?
In Steam\userdata\<your Steam ID>\1203620\remote with Steam Cloud on, or %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshrouded with it off.
Does my character transfer to the dedicated server?
Your character stays on your PC and joins the server world like any other player, with its level and inventory.
Why does my Enshrouded server keep loading a new world?
The world file is not named 3ad85aea, or it went into the wrong folder. Check saveDirectory in the config and rename the file.
Can friends bring their own worlds?
One server runs one world at a time. You can swap worlds by stopping the server and replacing the files, but back up each one first.
