To reset a 7 Days to Die server, stop it, back up the Saves folder, then change GameName in serverconfig.xml for a fresh save on the same map, or set a new WorldGenSeed and save name for a brand new random world. Deleting only a save's Player folder wipes everyone's progress but keeps the world.

Which kind of reset do you need?

There are four common resets, from lightest to heaviest:

Reset What it clears What it keeps How
Fresh save, same map Bases, loot, day count, players The generated map New GameName
Player wipe Levels, skills, inventories, quests Bases, map, day count Delete the save's Player folder
New random world Everything Your settings New WorldGenSeed, delete the save
Full clean install Everything, including the server files Your backup Reinstall, then restore serverconfig.xml

Most groups want the first one after a big update, and the third one when they are bored of the map.

Where are 7 Days to Die server saves stored?

A dedicated server keeps its saves outside the install folder by default:

System Default save folder
Windows %APPDATA%\7DaysToDie\Saves
Linux ~/.local/share/7DaysToDie/Saves

Random generated worlds sit next to it in GeneratedWorlds. If your serverconfig.xml sets UserDataFolder or SaveGameFolder, the saves are wherever those point instead.

Inside Saves, the layout is one folder per world, then one per save:

Saves/
  <World name>/ for example Navezgane, or your RWG world name
    <GameName>/            the save
      Player/ one set of files per player
      Region/ the map chunks you have changed
      main.ttw             world state

GameName and GameWorld in serverconfig.xml decide which folders the server loads.

Step 1: Stop the server and back up

Never wipe a running server. It writes the world on shutdown and can recreate files you just deleted.

  1. Run saveworld in the console, then stop the server.
  2. Copy the whole save folder (Saves/<World>/<GameName>) somewhere safe.
  3. If you plan a new map, also copy the world folder from GeneratedWorlds.

A backup lets you undo a wipe if half the group objects. See how to back up a game server for a routine that runs before every update.

How do you start a fresh save on the same map?

Change the save name. This is the cleanest reset because nothing gets deleted:

<property name="GameName" value="Season2"/>

Start the server and it creates Saves/<World>/Season2 from scratch: day 1, untouched POIs, nobody's bases. The old save stays on disk, so you can switch back by restoring the old name. Delete the old folder later once you are sure.

This is also the right move after a major version like V3.0, where The Fun Pimps moved many settings into the new SandboxCode. Set your new sandbox code before the first start so day 1 begins with the right rules. Our guide to changing 7 Days to Die server settings shows how.

How do you wipe player progress only?

Delete the Player folder inside the save while the server is stopped:

Saves/<World>/<GameName>/Player/

Everyone joins as a level 1 character with an empty inventory, but the world, the day counter and the blocks players placed remain. To reset a single player, delete only that player's files, which are named after their platform or EOS ID. The lpi and lp console commands help you match names to IDs while the server is running.

How do you generate a brand new random world?

  1. Stop the server and back up.
  2. Set a new seed, and optionally a new size:
<property name="GameWorld" value="RWG"/>
<property name="WorldGenSeed" value="autumn2026"/>
<property name="WorldGenSize" value="8192"/>
  1. Set a new GameName so the save starts fresh too.
  2. Start the server. Generation takes a while on the first start, often 10 minutes or more on 8K and larger worlds. Do not restart it mid generation.

Any word works as a seed, and the same seed and size always produce the same map. Delete the old world from GeneratedWorlds once you no longer need it, because big worlds take up a lot of disk. Larger worlds also need more RAM, which our 7 Days to Die lag fix explains.

To go back to the handmade map, set GameWorld to Navezgane.

How do you reset loot and POIs without a full wipe?

You usually do not need a wipe for this. Containers refill on their own after the Loot Respawn Days sandbox option, and since V3 that lives in the sandbox code rather than the old LootRespawnDays line. Lower it if players complain the map is picked clean. Questing also resets POIs as players take trader quests.

Resetting on GamezServers

The same resets are panel settings on our servers, no file editing needed:

  • Fresh save, same map: press Backup, change Save name in Settings and restart. The old save stays on disk.
  • New random world: set World to RWG, enter a new World seed, pick a World size, set a new Save name and restart.
  • Player wipe: stop the server, open Files, delete the Player folder in your save and start it again.

Backups are one click from the dashboard, so take one before every reset. See 7 Days to Die server hosting for plans from 8 GB.

FAQ

Does changing GameName delete my old world?

No. It starts a new save beside the old one. Switch the name back to load the old save again.

How do I reset a 7 Days to Die server but keep the map?

Set a new GameName and keep the same GameWorld, seed and size. You get a fresh save on the identical map.

Why did my server generate the same world again?

The seed and size were unchanged. The same WorldGenSeed and WorldGenSize always generate the same map, so change the seed.

Can I reset just one player's character?

Yes. Stop the server and delete that player's files from the save's Player folder. They start over next time they join.

Do I need to wipe after a 7 Days to Die update?

Not for small patches. After a major version, a fresh save is recommended because new POIs and world changes only appear in a freshly generated world.
