To move a Rising World save to a dedicated server, copy your world's folder from the Worlds folder in the game's install directory (for example steamapps\common\RisingWorld\Worlds\New World) and upload the whole folder into the server's Worlds folder. Then set World_Name in server.properties (or World Name in a panel) to the folder's exact name and restart. It works when the server runs the same edition and version as the game: a current version world needs a current version server, and a Java world needs the Java legacy server.

What you can and cannot move

World Can it move to a dedicated server?
Single player world from the current version, same game version Yes, this guide
A world from another Rising World server Yes, same steps, take its server.properties too
A Java edition world to a current version server No. The two versions use different worlds. Run the Java legacy server type for it instead
A current version world to a Java legacy server No, same reason in reverse
Game mode of an existing world (Survival or Creative) It stays as it was created. World_GameMode only applies to new worlds

What goes where

File or folder What it holds On your PC On the server
Worlds/<WorldName>/ The whole world: terrain changes, buildings, chests, plus player data <Steam>\steamapps\common\RisingWorld\Worlds\ Worlds/ in the server root
server.properties Server name, password, World_Name, World_GameMode, World_Seed, max players, RCON Only on a server Server root
Plugins Server side plugins, if your old server used any Only on a server Plugins/

To find the folder on your PC, right click Rising World in your Steam library, choose Manage and then Browse local files, and open Worlds. Each world is a subfolder with the name you gave it, such as New World. Ignore any cache folder, which only holds temporary files.

A Rising World village with houses and farmland, the kind of world that moves to the server as one folder

Before you start

  • Close Rising World so the world is fully saved.
  • Back up the world folder somewhere safe.
  • Check the edition. If you play the old Java version, the server must use the Java legacy server type. On GamezServers you switch the type in the panel.
  • Match the version. Players on a newer build cannot join an older server, and the other way round. Keep auto update on and restart before uploading.

Step 1: Start the server once and stop it

Let the server start with its default world, then stop it. It creates server.properties and its own world in Worlds/ (on our panel, named myworld until you change it). Back up or delete that world if you do not need it.

Step 2: Upload the world folder

Upload the whole world folder into Worlds/, so you end up with Worlds/New World/ and the files directly inside it. Not the files loose in Worlds/, and not Worlds/Worlds/New World/. Big worlds upload far more reliably zipped, or through an SFTP app such as FileZilla or WinSCP.

A short name without spaces, like OurValley, makes life easier. If you rename the folder, rename it before the first start.

Step 3: Point the server at it

In the current version, the world is chosen by World_Name:

Server_Name=Our Valley
Server_Port=4255
World_Name=OurValley
World_GameMode=Survival
World_Seed=

World_Name must match the folder name exactly, capitals included, because the server runs on Linux. World_GameMode and World_Seed only matter when a new world is created, so they do not change your uploaded world. On the Java legacy server the key is server_world_name instead. Edit with the server stopped, then start it and wait for Dedicated server is ready!.

Step 4: Join and check

In Rising World, open Multiplayer and use Connect by IP at the bottom of the list with the address and port. Walk to your base and check chests and buildings before inviting everyone.

The gotcha: the panel writes World_Name

On hosting panels, the world name is usually a panel field, and on GamezServers World Name is written into server.properties every time the server starts, along with the server name, password, game mode and RCON values. If you only edit World_Name in the file, the panel puts its own value back on the next start. The server then cannot find a folder with that name, makes a brand new world, and it looks like your upload vanished. It did not: your folder is still in Worlds/. Set World Name in the panel to the folder's exact name and restart.

The second trap is the edition. The current Rising World and the Java version are separate games with separate worlds. A Java world uploaded to a current version server is simply not recognised, and the server builds a new world next to it.

What happens to players

Player data is stored with the world, so when the whole world folder moves, players who were in that world normally come back with their inventory and position. They need to join with the same Steam account. Admins and permissions are configured on the server, not in the world, so set your admins again on the new server.

Common problems

  • Server makes a brand new world: World Name does not match the folder name exactly, or the folder is nested one level too deep.
  • Your world is missing after switching edition: Java worlds only load on the Java legacy server type, and current version worlds only on the standard one.
  • Cannot join after a patch: the server is on an older build. Restart it with auto update on.
  • Server does not appear in the list: the query port (the game port minus one, TCP, as the developer's server setup thread explains) is not reachable, or the list is slow. Use Connect by IP.
  • Changed to Creative but nothing happened: game mode is fixed when a world is created. Make a new world name to get a Creative world.

Moving it to GamezServers

On a Rising World server from GamezServers, upload the folder over SFTP (login in Settings) or in the file manager, which also does zips, extract and downloading a file from a link straight to the server. Set World Name, pick the right server type, and click Backup before replacing anything. Your builds then stay up without anyone's PC running. For settings, RCON and ports, see how to host a Rising World server.

FAQ

Where are Rising World worlds saved?

In the Worlds folder inside the game's install directory, one subfolder per world. In Steam use Manage, then Browse local files to open it.

Can I move a Java Rising World world to the new version?

No. Run it on a server with the Java legacy type, and keep playing it there with the Java version of the game.

Will my friends keep their stuff?

Usually yes, because player data is saved inside the world folder. Move the whole folder and join with the same Steam account.

Why does my Rising World server keep making a new world?

The world name setting does not match the folder name exactly. On a panel, change World Name there, because it rewrites server.properties on every start.
