To install SourceMod on a Fistful of Frags server, stop the server, extract Metamod:Source and then SourceMod into the fof folder (not the server's root folder), start the server and check with meta list and sm version in the console. Then add your SteamID to fof/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini and type sm_admin in game to open the admin menu. Plugins go in fof/addons/sourcemod/plugins.

What SourceMod gives a FoF server

Fistful of Frags runs on the Source engine, so it uses the same plugin stack as most Source games. Metamod:Source is the loader. SourceMod sits on top of it and runs plugins. Together they give you:

  • An in-game admin menu for kicking, banning, slaying, changing maps and more.
  • Map voting at the end of a map, and rock the vote during it.
  • Vote kick and vote mute, so regulars can handle trouble when no admin is on.
  • Community plugins built for FoF, such as gun menus and spectator lists.

Plugins run only on the server. Players install nothing.

Fistful of Frags, a Source engine western shooter

Step 1: Download the right packages

Download two things for your server's operating system (Linux .tar.gz or Windows .zip):

  1. Metamod:Source from metamodsource.net, the stable branch.
  2. SourceMod from sourcemod.net, the stable branch.

Pick the server's platform, not your PC's. A GamezServers server runs on Linux, so you need the Linux packages even if you play on Windows. Use current stable builds. Old guides link to specific versions such as Metamod 1.11 and SourceMod 1.10, which may not load on today's server.

Step 2: Stop the server and back up

Stop the server before copying files. Take a backup of the fof folder, or on our servers press backup in the panel. If something goes wrong, you can restore and try again.

Step 3: Extract Metamod:Source into fof

Both archives contain an addons folder. Extract Metamod first so addons lands inside the game folder:

fofserver/
  fof/
    addons/
      metamod/
      metamod.vdf

This is where most installs go wrong. A FoF community guide puts it plainly: install to the fof folder, not the top level server folder. On Linux, from the server folder:

tar -xvzf mmsource-*-linux.tar.gz -C fof

On Windows, open the zip and drag addons into fof.

Step 4: Extract SourceMod into fof

Do the same with SourceMod. It adds addons/sourcemod next to addons/metamod, and a cfg/sourcemod folder:

tar -xvzf sourcemod-*-linux.tar.gz -C fof

On our servers, upload the addons and cfg folders from each archive into fof with SFTP, letting them merge with what is there.

Step 5: Start and confirm it loaded

Start the server and type in the server console:

meta list
sm version

meta list should show SourceMod as a loaded plugin. sm version prints SourceMod's version. If meta is an unknown command, Metamod did not load: almost always because addons is in the wrong folder, or you uploaded the Windows package to a Linux server.

Step 6: Make yourself admin

  1. Find your SteamID. In game, type status in the console while on the server, and read your STEAM_ ID next to your name.
  2. Open fof/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini.
  3. Add a line at the bottom:
"STEAM_0:0:12345678" "99:z"

99 is the immunity level and z means all flags (root). For trusted helpers, use fewer flags, for example "b" for generic admin, "c" for kick and "d" for ban.

  1. Change the map or restart, join, and type sm_admin in the console. The admin menu opens. Bind it for quick access:
bind p "sm_admin"

Step 7: Turn on map voting

SourceMod ships map voting plugins switched off. In fof/addons/sourcemod/plugins/disabled you will find mapchooser.smx, rockthevote.smx and nominations.smx. Move the ones you want up one level into plugins:

Plugin What it adds
mapchooser.smx Vote for the next map near the end of the current one
rockthevote.smx Players type rtv to start a map vote early
nominations.smx Players nominate maps for the vote

The vote draws maps from your map cycle file, so keep fof/cfg/mapcycle.txt up to date with maps that suit your game mode. Change the map once and the plugins are live.

Step 8: Add community plugins

Plugins are .smx files that go in fof/addons/sourcemod/plugins. Most FoF plugins are on the AlliedModders forums. Examples that FoF admins mention in their guides:

  • FoF Guns: a gun menu so players can choose their weapon. Players bind it, for example bind q "guns".
  • Game Votes: vote kick and vote mute for when no admin is online.
  • speclist_hud: shows who is spectating you.

Read each plugin's thread for the FoF version it supports. Plugins written for other Source games often assume weapons or events FoF does not have. Add one plugin at a time, change the map, and check the console for errors.

Common problems

Problem Likely cause Fix
Unknown command "meta" Metamod in the wrong folder or wrong platform Move addons into fof, use the Linux package on Linux
meta list shows SourceMod as failed Mismatched or outdated SourceMod build Download the current stable build again
sm_admin says you have no access SteamID typo, or file not reloaded Check the ID, change map or run sm_reloadadmins
Plugin listed as error in sm plugins list Plugin not compatible with FoF or this version Remove it, check its forum thread
Everything stopped after a game update The update changed something plugins rely on Update Metamod and SourceMod to current builds

Keep it working after updates

When Fistful of Frags updates, update the server first, then check meta list and sm plugins list. If SourceMod stopped loading, a newer stable or development build of Metamod and SourceMod usually fixes it. That is the moment a backup pays for itself.

Running it without the fuss

A Fistful of Frags server from GamezServers gives you the fof folder in a file manager and over SFTP for Metamod, SourceMod and plugins, a live console for meta list and sm commands, and auto update in the panel so the server matches each game patch after a restart. Take a one click backup before every plugin change. New to the game's server side? Start with how to host a Fistful of Frags server. The steps are much the same as installing SourceMod on a Team Fortress 2 server, with fof in place of tf.
