Install Fabric mods on a Minecraft server: run the Fabric loader, add Fabric API, put jars in mods, and know which mods go on the server, the client or both.

To install Fabric mods on a Minecraft server, run the server on the Fabric loader for your exact Minecraft version, then put each mod's .jar in the server's mods/ folder together with Fabric API, which most Fabric mods need. Every mod must be built for that Minecraft version. Mods that add blocks, items or mobs go on the server and every player's client. Client only mods like Sodium do nothing on the server, and server only mods like Lithium need nothing on the client.

What you are working with

Piece What it is Where it goes
Fabric server launcher The server jar with Fabric Loader built in, from fabricmc.net Server root, replaces the vanilla jar
Fabric API Shared library almost every Fabric mod depends on mods/ on server and clients
Mod .jar files The mods mods/
config/ Mod settings, created on first start Server root
fabric.mod.json Inside each jar. Says which side the mod runs on and what it depends on Read only

Fabric mods are not Forge or NeoForge mods, and they are not Paper plugins. A Forge jar in a Fabric mods folder does not load, and Fabric servers do not read a plugins folder.

Which mods go where

Kind of mod Examples Server Players
Content: new blocks, items, mobs, dimensions Most "adds X" mods Yes Yes, same version
Server performance Lithium, FerriteCore, Krypton Yes Optional
Server tools Chunky, LuckPerms for Fabric, Simple Voice Chat server side Yes Only if the mod says so
Client performance and visuals Sodium, Iris, shader packs No Their choice
Client UI Mod Menu, minimap clients, HUD mods No Their choice

Each project's Modrinth page lists Client and Server sides under its details, which is the quickest check. Fabric Loader also reads the environment field in every jar: mods marked client are skipped on a dedicated server, which is why a stray Sodium in mods/ only shows "skipping mod" in the log instead of crashing. The trouble starts with client mods that are not marked properly. Those can crash a server on start.

Before you start

  • Pick the Minecraft version first. Fabric mods are built per Minecraft version. A mod for 1.21.1 usually does not load on 1.21.4 or 26.1, so choose the version your most important mods support, then get every mod for it.
  • Back up. Content mods change the world. Removing one later can leave holes or crash on load.
  • Take one source. Get mods from Modrinth or CurseForge, and filter by Fabric and your version.

Step 1: Run the server on Fabric

Download the Fabric server launcher for your Minecraft version and loader from fabricmc.net. It is one jar named like fabric-server-mc.1.21.1-loader.0.19.5-launcher.1.1.2.jar. Start it in the server folder:

java -Xmx4G -jar fabric-server-mc.1.21.1-loader.0.19.5-launcher.1.1.2.jar nogui

On first start it downloads the vanilla server and libraries, creates mods/, and asks you to accept eula.txt. Existing vanilla worlds load fine on Fabric.

Step 2: Add Fabric API

Download Fabric API for the same Minecraft version and put it in mods/. Almost every mod that is not purely a library lists it as a dependency. Missing it is the single most common error on new Fabric servers: the server stops with Incompatible mods found! and a line saying a mod requires fabric-api, which is missing.

Fabric Loader writes exactly what is wrong. Read that line: it names the mod, the dependency, and the version range it wants.

Step 3: Add your mods

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Upload the jars into mods/. Many mods also need a library of their own, like Cloth Config, Architectury or owo-lib. The mod page lists these as dependencies. Add them too.
  3. Start the server and watch the log until Done. The loader prints a list of every mod it loaded.

Add mods a few at a time on a new server. When something breaks, you know which batch did it.

Step 4: Give players the same mods

Players need:

  1. The Fabric loader for the same Minecraft version, from the Fabric installer or a launcher such as the Modrinth App, Prism or CurseForge.
  2. Fabric API and every content mod from the server, same versions.
  3. Any client only mods they like on top.

The cleanest way is to make the client side a modpack, so everyone gets the same list. If a player is missing a content mod, they usually get disconnected with a registry or "mismatched mod" message that names it.

Common problems

  • "Requires fabric-api, which is missing": add Fabric API for your Minecraft version to mods/.
  • "Requires minecraft 1.21.x" or "Incompatible mod set": a mod is for another Minecraft version. Get the right build or remove it.
  • Crash mentioning client classes or rendering: a client only mod without proper environment metadata. Remove it from the server.
  • Mod loads but nothing changes in game: the player does not have the mod, or its config is off. Check config/.
  • Forge mod in a Fabric server: the loader ignores or rejects it. Look for a Fabric version, or move to Forge or NeoForge.
  • Server lags after adding mods: add Lithium and FerriteCore, and see the best Minecraft server performance mods.

Fabric mods on GamezServers

On a Minecraft server from GamezServers, choose Fabric as the server type and set the Minecraft version in Settings, then press Update game: the Fabric server is installed for you, and your world stays. Upload mods to mods/ in the file manager or over SFTP, or have the file manager download a jar from a link straight to the server. Click Backup before adding content mods. FAQ

Do I need Fabric API on my server?

Almost always. Most Fabric mods depend on it, so put the version for your Minecraft release in mods/ on the server and every client.

Do players need the same Fabric mods as the server?

For mods that add content, yes, same versions. Server only mods like Lithium and client only mods like Sodium do not need to match.

Can I put Sodium on a Fabric server?

It does nothing there. Sodium is a client mod and Fabric Loader skips it on a dedicated server, so leave it out.

Can a Fabric server run Forge mods or plugins?

No. Fabric loads only Fabric mods (and many Quilt compatible ones). Forge mods need a Forge or NeoForge server, and plugins need Paper.
