How to Host a RageCOOP Server for GTA V Story Mode Co-op

Set up a RageCOOP server for GTA V story mode co-op: download the server, edit Settings.xml, open UDP 4499, and get friends connected with F9.

To host a RageCOOP server, download RageCoop.Server-win-x64.zip or RageCoop.Server-linux-x64.zip from the RAGECOOP-V GitHub releases, run RageCoop.Server, edit the Settings.xml it creates, and open UDP port 4499. Each friend needs a PC copy of GTA V with ScriptHookV, ScriptHookVDotNet 3.6.0 or later, and the RageCOOP client of the same version as your server. In game they press F9, enter your address and connect. That is all there is to it, but the version and port details are where most first attempts fail.

What RageCOOP is, honestly

RageCOOP is a free, open source mod that adds co-op to Grand Theft Auto V's story mode. Players share the single player world: synced players, vehicles, NPCs, bullets and ragdolls. It is not GTA Online, it is not made by Rockstar, and it is not a roleplay framework like FiveM.

It is also a small project. The last numbered release, 1.5.4.7, came out in November 2023, and since then the team has published nightly builds from time to time. It still works and a handful of public servers are online at any moment, but expect to tinker. Groups that want a big scripted RP server are better served by FiveM. Groups that want to drive around Los Santos together with their single player mods intact are exactly who RageCOOP is for.

Step 1: Pick a version and stick to it

Client and server must be the same RageCOOP version. Two choices make sense:

Build When to use it
1.5.4.7 (latest release) Older Legacy builds of GTA V and the stable ScriptHookVDotNet release
nightly GTA V Legacy 1.0.3258.0 or newer. The project's own release notes say to update ScriptHookVDotNet to its nightly build and use the RageCOOP nightly on those game versions

Most groups on an up to date Steam copy of GTA V Legacy end up on nightly. Decide once, then send everyone the same client zip.

RageCOOP was built before GTA V Enhanced existed. Play on the Legacy edition. If you are unsure which edition you have, the FiveM guide to GTA V Enhanced explains the split.

Step 2: Run the server

Windows

  1. Download RageCoop.Server-win-x64.zip for your chosen version and extract it to its own folder.
  2. Run RageCoop.Server.exe. On first launch it writes Settings.xml next to the program.
  3. Allow it through the firewall:
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="RageCoop.Server" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=4499

Linux

mkdir ragecoop && cd ragecoop
wget https://github.com/RAGECOOP/RAGECOOP-V/releases/download/nightly/RageCoop.Server-linux-x64.zip
unzip RageCoop.Server-linux-x64.zip
chmod +x RageCoop.Server
./RageCoop.Server

The server is ready when the console says it is listening for clients. Typing a line into the console sends it to players as chat from "Server". Stop it with Ctrl+C.

Step 3: Edit Settings.xml

Stop the server, open Settings.xml and adjust the fields that matter:

Setting Default What it does
Port 4499 UDP port the server listens on
MaxPlayers 32 Player cap
MaxLatency 500 Players above this ping (ms) are kicked
Name RAGECOOP server Name in the server list
Description, GameMode, Language, Website various Shown in the public server list
WelcomeMessage Welcome on this server :) Private message each player gets on joining
AnnounceSelf false true lists the server publicly
MasterServer https://masterserver.ragecoop.com/ Where the server announces itself
WeatherTimeSync true Everyone shares the host's weather and time
NpcStreamingDistance 500 NPCs beyond this distance are not sent. -1 is unlimited
PlayerStreamingDistance -1 Same for players. -1 is unlimited
AllowedUsernameChars letters, digits, - and _ Characters allowed in player names
KickSpamming / SpamLimit true / 100 Kicks players who spawn more than 100 entities
KickGodMode false Kicks players using god mode
UseVoice false In-game voice chat
UseZeroTier / UseP2P false VPN based hosting without port forwarding
AutoUpdate false Self update to nightly every 10 minutes when a new build exists

If an older config points MasterServer at masterserver.ragecoop.online, change it to https://masterserver.ragecoop.com/. The old address no longer answers, so a server set to announce itself there never appears in the list.

There is no password field. To keep strangers out, use the Management resource covered in RageCOOP admin commands and whitelist.

Step 4: Open UDP 4499

Forward UDP 4499 on your router to the PC running the server. A TCP rule will not work. Our port forwarding guide covers the router side. If you are behind carrier grade NAT, UseZeroTier is RageCOOP's built in workaround: it joins a ZeroTier network so players can reach you without a forward, but every player then needs ZeroTier installed too.

Step 5: Get your friends in

Each player:

  1. Owns GTA V on PC and installs ScriptHookV, ScriptHookVDotNet 3.6.0 or later and the .NET Framework 4.8 runtime.
  2. Downloads RageCoop.Client.zip of the same version as the server from the RAGECOOP-V releases, extracts it outside the GTA V folder and runs RageCoop.Client.Installer.exe.
  3. Starts GTA V and loads story mode.
  4. Presses F9, sets a Username (no spaces), selects Server IP, types your-ip:4499 and clicks Connect.

If you set AnnounceSelf to true, the server also shows under Servers in the same menu. When something goes wrong, the error text tells you where to look: see RageCOOP can't connect fix.

Running it without a home PC

A RageCOOP server is light: it relays positions, vehicles and bullets, so a few friends fit in 1 GB of memory. The hard part is keeping it reachable without forwarding ports or leaving a PC on. A GamezServers RageCOOP server gives you its own address, sets the port in Settings.xml for you, and has a Version field in the control panel that takes latest, nightly or a release number so the server matches the client your group installed. Settings.xml is editable in the file manager, resources upload over SFTP, the live console shows players joining, and friends can split the bill. New customers get 50% off the first month.

FAQ

What port does RageCOOP use?

UDP 4499 by default, set by Port in Settings.xml.

Does RageCOOP work with GTA V Enhanced?

It was built for the Legacy edition and depends on ScriptHookV. Use GTA V Legacy for RageCOOP.

Can I get banned for using RageCOOP?

RageCOOP runs in story mode, not GTA Online. Keep your mods out of GTA Online sessions.

How many players can a RageCOOP server hold?

32 by default, set with MaxPlayers. Story co-op is usually played in small groups.

Can players use other single player mods?

Yes, that is a big part of RageCOOP's appeal. Mods that change the world should match across players to avoid desyncs.
