You can host a CS2 server for free in two ways: start a match from the in game Practice menu with friends in your party, or run Valve's free CS2 dedicated server on your PC with a free Game Server Login Token. Both depend on your PC and internet. For always online, CS2 is cheap to host.
What are the free ways to host a CS2 server?
| Option | Cost | Stays online | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice lobby (listen server) | Free | Only while you play | A quick game with bots or friends tonight |
| Dedicated server on your PC | Free software, your electricity | While your PC is on | Learning, LAN parties, occasional scrims |
| Free cloud tier | Usually free for a limited time | Yes, if it runs at all | Rarely practical for CS2, see below |
| Free game server hosts | Free | Often with shutdowns | Almost never offered for CS2 |
| Paid hosting | From 9.99 USD a month | Yes | Regular scrims, practice and community servers |
Option 1: Host a free match from the Practice menu
This is the fastest free way and needs no setup.
- Turn on the console: Settings, Game, Enable Developer Console, Yes.
- Invite your friends to your party from the friends list.
- Go to Play, Practice, choose a mode and map and press Go.
- Your party loads into a match running on your PC. Add bots with
bot_add_torbot_add_ct, and turn on practice tools withsv_cheats 1.
Limits: everyone's ping depends on your PC and upload speed, the match ends if you leave or crash, and people outside your party cannot find or join it. Our CS2 with friends and bots guide goes deeper on this, including every bot command.
Option 2: Run the free CS2 dedicated server on your PC
The CS2 dedicated server is the full game started in dedicated mode, and it is free. It runs on Windows and Linux.
What you need:
- About 60 GB of free disk space, because the server downloads the whole game.
- Around 4 GB of RAM for a 5v5, and 6 to 8 GB for plugins or 32 players, on top of what your own game uses if you play on the same PC.
- A fast CPU. Each tick runs on a single thread, so clock speed matters more than core count.
- A free Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for app ID 730 from Valve's game server account page. Your Steam account must not be limited and needs a phone number on it.
- Access to your router to forward port 27015 over UDP and TCP.
The short version of the setup:
- Install SteamCMD and download CS2 with
+app_update 730 validate. - Create your GSLT and add it with
+sv_setsteamaccount <token>on the launch line. - Start the server with a map and mode, for example
-dedicated +map de_dust2 +game_type 0 +game_mode 1. - Forward 27015 and give friends your public IP with
connect your.ip:27015.
The full walkthrough with every command is in how to make a CS2 server. If the server shows a token error, see the CS2 GSLT token error fix.
Limits: your home IP is shared with every player, ports cannot be forwarded on connections behind CGNAT, and you must update the server every time Valve patches CS2, which is often. Plugin users also need to restore the Metamod line in gameinfo.gi after many updates, covered in CS2 Metamod not loading after an update.
How much does it cost to run a CS2 server at home?
The software is free, but power is not. A desktop drawing 120 W for a four hour scrim night uses about 0.5 kWh, which is pennies. Left on all month, the same PC uses about 86 kWh, which is roughly 13 USD at 0.15 USD per kWh or 26 USD at 0.30 USD per kWh. For occasional use, home hosting is effectively free. For a server that is always up, electricity alone can cost more than a hosted server.
Can you host CS2 on a free cloud server?
Rarely in practice. The problems:
- Too little memory. Always free virtual machines usually have 1 GB of RAM or less on x86 processors, far below the 4 GB a CS2 server needs.
- Wrong processor type. Some free tiers offer more memory on ARM processors, but the CS2 dedicated server is built for 64 bit x86 Windows and Linux, so it will not run there natively.
- Disk and bandwidth limits. A 60 GB install and the traffic from 10 players can exceed free storage and bandwidth allowances, and some providers bill for overages.
- Trial credit expires. Free credit tiers work for a month or so, then start charging.
If you enjoy Linux and want to learn, a free trial credit is a fun experiment. As a long term free CS2 server, it is not realistic. Our free vs paid game server hosting guide covers free hosts in general.
What is the cheapest paid way to host CS2?
CS2 needs far less memory than survival games, so hosting it is cheap. Our CS2 plans:
| Plan | RAM | Players | Price a month | Split 5 ways | Split 10 ways |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter (popular) | 4 GB | up to 10 | 9.99 USD | about 3.00 USD each | about 2.00 USD each |
| Standard | 6 GB | up to 16 | 14.99 USD | about 4.00 USD each | about 2.50 USD each |
| Pro | 8 GB | up to 32 | 19.99 USD | about 5.00 USD each | about 3.00 USD each |
New customers get 50% off the first month, so a 5v5 server starts at about 5 USD. Split it across your team and it costs less than a coffee each per month. Splits include the 1 USD fee per share. There is no contract, and you can cancel from the dashboard any time.
What the paid option takes off your hands:
- The GSLT is created for you when the server is set up, so there is no token to paste.
- No port forwarding and your home IP stays private.
- Updates on restart, so a Valve patch is one click, not a SteamCMD session.
- Panel buttons for changing maps, loading Workshop maps by ID, restarting the match, ending warmup and pausing.
- Backups, DDoS protection and 24/7 support.
Which option should you pick?
- Playing tonight with friends and bots: the Practice lobby. Free and instant.
- A LAN party or learning how servers work: the free dedicated server on your own PC.
- Weekly scrims, a practice server for your team or a community server: a small hosted server split across the team. Setup takes about a minute, see how to host a CS2 server, and plans are on the CS2 hosting page.
FAQ
Is the CS2 dedicated server free?
Yes. Valve's CS2 dedicated server is free to download through SteamCMD as app 730, and Game Server Login Tokens are free too.
Do I need a GSLT to host CS2 for free?
You need one for players to find and join your server over the internet. LAN only servers can run without one, and tokens are free from Valve.
Can friends join my CS2 Practice match from outside my party?
No. Practice matches only include the party that loaded in together. For anyone to join any time, you need a dedicated server.
How much RAM does a CS2 server need?
About 4 GB for a 5v5 and 6 to 8 GB for plugin heavy servers or 32 player lobbies.
Can I host a CS2 server on a free cloud VM?
Usually not. Free x86 machines have too little RAM, and free ARM machines cannot run the x86 only CS2 server natively.
